Want: dead battery -> plug in phone -> phone auto ON

Here's the scenario:

Phone's battery is dead.
You go to plug in the phone.
From here, I'd like the phone to automatically turn itself ON once it detects a power source.

What's the best way to do this?

You really shouldn't be letting your device drain to the point that it turns itself off - especially not on such a regular basis that you would feel the need to automate turning it back on. That can do some srs damage to the battery, and decrease its long-term life.

the idea is for a car computer. but it needs to go in theory a week of not being used (past the standby battery limit). damage to the battery / etc isn't a concern next to the convenience of having it "just work" when I turn the car on.

I use my old Nexus One in my car, and I've got a Tasker profile that shuts off all its radios and turns off the screen when power is removed. I can easily get a week of standby out of that setup.

interesting. my other idea was a portable power pack kind of as a mini-UPS. this plus some kind of power-save mode like you're described should get me plenty of time.

my only other concern, is sometimes I very sparsely use the car. i.e. it's off for a week, then I drive it for 20 mins, then I don't use it again till the next day, again for 20 minutes...

would the device be able to charge enough to keep going long-term in these short driving-spurts kind of scenarios?

It really depends on the specific device in question, and also what sort of ROM you are running. For a car-computer, you'll generally want to run an OS that's really stripped down without any unnecessary applications or services. Make sure nothing's running in the background, nothing's trying to sync, all radios (wifi, bluetooth, cellular, LTE, etc) are turned off), and that the display is turned off (and set with a very low time-out in case it does get turned on) and it should be able to last for quite a while.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right thread for such a discussion, but I'm also not married to the smartphone paradigm. a raspberry pi for instance, automatically boots when it gets plugged in and doesn't worry about batteries or anything like that. it'd take 10-15 secs after I start the car to boot, and good to go!

I can't say that I do, but it does look interesting. What exactly are you hoping to use your carputer setup for? Navigation, diagnostics, media, etc?

end-game is a cheap tracker / security system that uploads my location to my home server. if it really gets good, maybe include an ODBII reader and upload diagnostics and stats as well.

So you're looking for mobile data connectivity as well, or just opportunistic wifi?

That could make the Pi route a bit less desirable, as you'd need to provide some manner of mobile hotspot to get it to work.

the mobile hotspot part is taken care of. I found a plan that offers pure prepaid for 10 cents a MB and should work great. (I won't post the name since I"m a new forum member and don't want to be accused of spam / ads.) All that's left is finding the best device to use with it (and why a cell phone is in some ways desirable, because it can already navigate the network / has all the antennae for no extra work)

While I was looking around the 'net for a solution to another query, I stumbled across something that may work for you:

fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0

should tell the device to automatically turn on when power is applied (the default is set to 1, which "boots" the device into charging mode). This probably only works on Nexus devices, and I haven't tried it so I can't guarantee that it will work.

I found that post here in a larger and very helpful thread about an in-dash Nexus 7 car setup.
