Root Want to update ROM but have no files on new sd card

SO you want to put another custom ROM on your device right? The simplest way is to download SP Flash tool and flash the rom on your device. From Custom ROM Back To Stock ROM + updating drivers for ZOPO Captain S screen . here is explained for another phone but the principal is the same.

Hope this helps!

Gee thanks!!! - now do I ignore the first bit with the usb drivers and just skip down to "Install the newest version of android and and SP Flash-Tool"? (I really really have no idea what I am doing!!!!)

Actually all you need to do is put a copy of the new ROM zip file on your sd card.

Then boot into recovery (from off hold volume down(-) & press the power button to get to the bootloader.

In bootloader scroll down with the volume keys to recovery & press the power button.

Now in Recovery select wipe data (factory reset) & wipe cache.

Now select install zip from sd, select your Rom zip & confirm.

Reboot the device & you're done. First boot may take up to 10 minutes while the dalvik cache is rebuilt.

I did try that to begin with - but the phone wont go into recovery mode.... in fact even things like google play wont work now - just keeps saying app not installed. in the past I think it had a superuser icon on it somewhere but that has disappeared too. :(

If you rooted using Revolutionary as you said in your first post you will be S-off. With a Mildwild ROM installed your phone will be rooted. With that combination you can download the free 4ext Recovery Updater app from here:
http://www.4ext.net/
If you run the app it will install the latest 4ext touch recovery. You will then have a fully functional recovery with the bonus of a touchscreen interface so you won't need your volume button while in Recovery.

4ext is also the only recovery that will reliably partition your sd card so that you can utilise Mildwild's a2sd+ scripts. For more information read the Root Memory FAQ in the root guide sticky thread.

I'd ignore "SP Flash Tool" altogether. As Nicka says, just copy a ROM .zip to sd and flash from recovery. That's how ROM zips are intended to be used.

I'm not sure what you mean by "doesn't show up". Can you give an example for this device - stuff like this is device-dependent, so problems with a different device, using different recoveries and different ROMs, aren't necessarily relevant.

Conversely, have you confirmed that this tool works with the Desire? I ask because the Desire isn't on your device list, and for modifying system software I'd like to be certain that the method works for the device in question before recommending it.

The only case I've met where recovery can't install a ROM from SD is where it's an old zip using the older scripting and you have a more recent recovery which doesn't support that. That should only be an issue with the very earliest Desire ROMs (and if necessary there are older recoveries which can install those).
