All right people, the title says it all! Apparently Carbon was waiting for their one year anniversary to coincide with their first KitKat nightly. Downloading now, can't wait to get this bad boy on my phone! Special thanks to @nathan75 for giving me the heads up with a PM this morning. Head on over to the Carbon website, make sure to read the announcement and follow their instructions; they are recommending a GApps flash in the same session as the ROM flash, just FYI, I know normally a lot of us flash GApps in a second recovery session after the ROM has settled in. Enjoy!

News | Carbon Rom

OK all my friends on the Boost side (VM/Boost united as always!!), here is the first Carbon KitKat nightly, ready to flash, for those of you who would like a version that won't require any modifications on your part. I highly recommend that you know how to modify the Sprint ROM's to flash on our devices, @wetbiker7 has a great thread and video covering all your needs, and I have done the same on the VM forum. However, I don't mind putting up the ones I flash personally from time to time, as a favor to all my friends here! Two versions, one with just the assert lines removed, and the other has the asserts removed and has been debloated to my personal tastes (see my CyanogenMod 11 thread for a description of what I remove in terms of system apps). Also, please read the info posted on the Carbon website regarding the new release before flashing; one of the things they recommend is to install GApps in the same recovery session, which is something I normally do in a second session after the initial ROM flash has settled in. Also, it has been said over and over, in many threads and by many users, but USE PHILZ TOUCH!! No complaints allowed if you use TWRP or CWM and something goes sideways. As a plus, Philz updated today to version 6.12.8, if anybody needs a link let me know.

Carbon KitKat Asserts Removed and Debloated

Standard disclaimer applies, I am not responsible for bricked devices or the zombie apocalypse if something goes sideways. Also, this is not my original work, it is the work of the awesome Carbon development team!! Happy flashing!!

Awesome news! Thanks for the heads up bro.

Edit: I'll be sure to get this thread linked to the AOSP ROM section shortly. :D

Sure buddy! I've got modified copies to link as well, got them posted on the VM side but didn't have time to do the same on the Boost side before work. Thread is titled the same on VM if anyone wants them now, otherwise I will update this thread late tonight. ROM is running unbelievably awesome so far!!!

Is this better then cm11 builds and better then moar v8?

All right, as promised, just got home from work a little bit ago and have now posted copies of the new Carbon that are ready to flash in post #2. Have been running this ROM since early this morning and it has been unbelievably awesome; I'm even currently using the stock kernel, as opposed to my normal dkp, and getting great results. While I don't normally believe in the power of benchmarking, I do think it is a useful tool if one is comparing apples to apples, i.e. looking at their normal usage with various kernels/ROM's as opposed to doing insane tweaks that would burn a device out in a few hours if left running just to achieve a high score. That being said, I had Quadrant Standard scores that were higher than any other AOSP ROM I have run, at least the KitKat versions, and for any other kernel as well, so going to stick with this combo for a while. Plus, just totally smooth, great interface, and some nice new and updated features. Carbon team really outdid themselves, and it shows; I am glad they decided to release an awesome first build instead of a traditionally buggy nightly, and the wait, although it tried my patience, was well worth it!!

Just flash the zip file for the newest recovery from your current recovery, it is pretty much just like doing a dirty flash for a ROM.

Link is here for the Goo.im download page for the d2spr version of Philz:

Goo.im Downloads - Browsing d2spr

Choose the zip file for version 6.12.8 if you want to flash from current recovery, or the tar file if you are going to use either Odin or Mobile Odin.

Is philz update necessary and what does it fix and is it safe to dirty flash over 😖💀

I flashed Carbon's first nightly just fine yesterday morning while still on Philz version 6.07.9, it wasn't until later in the day that it was discovered that Philz had updated to 6.12.8. Generally a good idea to make sure your preferred recovery is as up to date as possible. Just download the latest zip and flash from current recovery, as I mentioned a couple of posts above. :)

Good news for me as well.....this is by far my favorite of any other rom...(no offense to MOAR) I'd say MOAR my favorite TW, and carbon for aosp.

I know it's been asked before but I gotta ask heh, and no it's not a nag question it's more a concern. Battery life, how does it fair with this rom.
bean and slim both gave me terrible battery life and I guess is a known issue they haven't tracked down yet, so that's why I'm asking.
So far of all the aosp styles cm11 snapshot2 has been preferred taste/rom for me as my go to aosp rom.

I knew they were working on carbon so I was in high hopes they'd get things worked out.

Kind of hard for me to comment on battery life since I have a ZeroLemon plus various kernel tweaks, but I'm getting the usual usage of less than 1% per hour, so I should get four or five days out of a full charge still. Same performance on CM11, but Vanir and CyanFox had noticeable battery drain issues.

Ok as usual carbon has it going on. I landed on them with my s2 and they cuahgt my attn really fast. I love the settings, because they have quite a bit of options that are useful for most everyone, but it's not OVERLY saturated with tweaks and settings like revolt is, that thing is way over packed with settings, it just feels cramped and overwhelming to me.

Seem like a few roms are having battery drain issues these days, dunno what the deal is.....my guess with all these kernels out, would be they are using other than stock kernel and running into battery drains because of adverse affects. That's why I love moar so well, because of the option to use "stock" kernel.
I never have really been one to tweak the kernel, or overclock or anything, because I was always more about battery life vs speed, of coarse if I can find a happy medium that's good also, and stock seems to give me that. It's not overly fast, but the battery life is not bad at all either.

I was wanting to stick with the same ROM while cycling the new battery but I may just have to say to heck with it and go ahead and flash Carbon. LOL Good info about sticking with the stock kernel too Struckn. YA gotta love it when the stock kernel gives you the performance you want. :)

Since you have to give it four or five cycles, maybe one ROM exclusively for each cycle? Must say though, Carbon is THE BOMB!! Everything I loved about it from 4.3.x builds, and just smooth as silk. Plus, looks like they are going to add features back in as they can, so it will only get better!

Welp, I forgot to add something to my original post about the battery and rugged case and had to go back and edit my original post. I actually ended up editing it a few times. LOL :banghead:

It seems the new rugged case covers the proximity sensor. Alpha2k posted a video link in the Zerolemon thread where a guy had the same issue with the S4 case. I can fix it but thankfully the home button turns the screen back on during a call right now with the TW ROM I'm running. The guy in the video states that his S4 worked fine and the call screen could be reached while on stock based ROMs but not AOSP. I'll have to see what happens with my S3. Bro, I am hoping I'll be able to use the home button with Carbon. I'll probably end up doing the case modification but it would be nice not to be forced to do it just to run Carbon or any of the other AOSP ROMs. You will definitely be one of the 1st to know. I'll probably end up sending you a text as soon as I find out. Wish me luck. :D

I definitely agree with you about sticking with the same ROM while cycling the battery too. It's going to be a few days before I'll be able to give this ROM a try. I am looking forward to flashing Carbon for sure. Reading about how well it's running for you has got me stoked Bro. :D:D

Pretty sure you can adjust the proximity sensor settings in the build.prop as well, you could probably set them to be always on instead of relying on the proximity sensor realizing that the phone has moved away from your face. Just a wild guess though, not a problem I've ever encountered. Dremel tool to the rescue I'm sure!

Yep. The build.prop is definitely a good idea. I may end up asking someone who is familiar with it. Dazed or Rompnit would definitely be 2 good people to ask about that. There's a good chance the home button will work. That would be excellent! (fingers crossed) I actually don't mind tapping it to turn the screen on either. After having the Prevail for so long, I got used to having to tap the power button to turn the screen on during calls since it didn't have a proximity sensor.

If I do end up doing a modification, I just hope it can be Dremeled without removing the whole piece. If I completely remove it that also means I'll lose the built-in screen protector which is working great. Ouch!

One thing's for sure Bro, I've definitely got to get it figured out. Not being able to run Carbon or other AOSP ROMS with this case on isn't an option.

I'm going to pull it apart tomorrow and see what's up. I've also got a request for a video review of the case itself. I'll probably get that taken care of tomorrow while I've got the case off. If I mod the case I've told Alpha2k I'd video it too. I hope it doesn't come to that but I've gotta do what I've gotta do. ;)

OK, sorry to get off topic so much concerning the case. Hopefully things go well Bro. I like easy. Hahahahaha! :D

To late for the rom, I'm on carbon now. Very smooth and fast for me. Love this rom.

Is there another way other than a dremmel tool? Because I don't have a dremmel tool

Update:
Finally found something in aosp that has gotten me to the annoying "can't take it anymore" stage.

With Voice messages I prefer the VVM way, which works on TW, but on aosp there is no fix yet hence it's got me to the point of screaming and pulling my hair out.

Today for whatever reason I got a lot of calls, and I don't normally get even a single one, but today I was super busy, and of course, I got voice mails. So for every single one I got double text messages. I have since then tried for the last 2 hours to get VVM to work, and to no avail sadly I didn't have any luck.

I found a sprint VVM apk file that works in aosp, but now instead of the TWO text messages I now get a message for voicemail as well, that's 3 in all.

It's bad enough I get the 2 with texts, and sometimes they are spread out for a matter of mins, but it's come to the point of annoyance now, rather than a put up with it thing.

Thinking I may head back to moar once again.

Lol told you something would irritate you and make you come back to tw lol I that's not a problem for me I just ignore my voice mail all together lol but not being able to play certain games irritate the mess out of me but I love the battery life on asop roms haven't tried carbon yet I'm in moar v8 but it's starting to irritate me how bad the call qualit is and the little bugs how I call someone it instantly rings then stops and connects then calls
