Can't turn off Push Noticications!

And it is driving me crazy!! Been working on this for a good two and a half hours now and I can't figure it out. It's probably my fault, as I got a new "mine-tab" today (4.3") and I swear that when I was setting it up it asked if I would allow push notifications and I just clicked "yes" without thinking and now it's driving me crazy. Every time I am trying to do something else I get a message from skype or messenger at the bottom of the screen. It makes it really hard to concentrate on what I am doing with everyone saying "hi" at the bottom of my screen in the meantime. I know there must be a simple way to do this, but I cant find it. I am running Android 4.0.4 and any help would be appreciated. Vin.

Welcome to Android Forums. What device are you using? When we know that we can probably find some other users of it who can share information with you.

On my galaxy tab running 4.1.2, I would click "Settings" - "Applications" - "Skype" and then uncheck "Show Notifications". Repeat for any other apps which send unwanted notifications.

First let me apologize for not being as thorough as I would normally be with my explanation, but it was 230 in the morning here and I was having a hard time focusing, lol. The problem Thom is it's a "store brand" of a Spanish department store here, so I doubt anyone here would be familiar with it because it's about as generic as you can get! I did try a "factory reset" but that didn't help, I tried long pressing on the messages as they came up to get settings for the individual app, but that did nothing, and funpig I tried goint into settings to do that too and at least on my version of Android when I do that it doesn't give me the "notifications" option. It gives the standard, "uninstall, stop, move to sd card, clear cache" options, but NOT the one I am looking for! I know there has to be a way, this can't be forever but I sure haven't found it yet! Every thing I have seen so far on the net is for 4.1 and up and I have 4.0! A day late and a dollar short, that's the story of my life!!! lol

I have GB, JB, and KK. I do not have ICS.

The option suggested by funpig is not in GB but is in JB and KK.

Have you tried it in you off-brand ICS device?

I have tried it Thom, and I get force stop, uninstall, move to SD card, clear data, and clear cache. Every thing BUT the "show notifications" tab. I think they started to use that with 4.1

Each individual app should have there own notification settings.

So simply open the app(s) in question, go to settings (within the app) and turn off notifications.

That is true for Skype under GB so I assume it is for ICS also.

This turned out to be the solution, although it's still a bit "hit and miss." Google Talk, for example, has that option in settings, but Yahoo Messenger does not! You can only mute audio, but the messages keep appearing! That's why I was going so nuts, I was trying to do it with Yahoo yesterday!! So it boils down to just finding apps that let you take the notifications out and not use the one's that don't. Thanks to all for their input and help, Vin.

Yeh it is always worth trawling through an Apps settings when you first install it just to check there are no annoying unwanted notifications.

The native option to block notifications was introduced in Android 4.1. IIRC it was right around the time all the airpush variants were coming on the scene. It wasn't an option when I first got my GNex, but was when I got my Nexus 7 which was when 4.1 debuted. Some apps did have the option to stop notifications, but these weren't the ones you would normally want to block them in

That's the way it usually works isn't it, you can block the ones you don't want to and the ones you want to block you can't, lol. Just about everyone I know uses Yahoo so now I have to get them to switch over to Talk, or Hangouts if the upgrade lets you block the notifications too!
