Group text message shows as "download"

Whenever I receive a group text message it shows up with "downlad" in the message, but nothing ever appears.

Because whoever is sending it has their message app set to send any text over 160 characters as MMS.

but nothing ever appears.

Either you have your APN settings wrong. or you're receiving texts from people using iPhones. (iMessage doesn't send real SMS. Apple knows about the problem but refuses to acknowledge it.)
