Difference Between AOSP and Stock-Based ROMs
- Stock-Based ROMs:
A stock ROM is the ROM that comes with a device; the device is "stocked" with that ROM by the manufacturer. Android is generally customized by the manufacturer to some degree; at minimum there needs to be device-specific drivers and so on for Android to work on a particular device. The ROM becomes Stock-Based when someone modifies most of the system. For example, say someone gets a Warp and doesn't like what its shipped with, or some things don't work. That person will take the stock ROM and do a number of things, like removing the Boost Mobile apps that come preinstalled, adding root permissions, theming the ROM, adding new features to the ROM, changing functions of the ROM, etc. Now that person has a Stock-Based ROM that they can release to the public for those who don't want to conform with the shipped software.
- AOSP ROMs
AOSP means Android Open-Source Project. AOSP is Google's initiative to guide development of the Android platform. AOSP is technically pure Google, however AOSP ROMs are built using Google's source code and then modified; essentially, these become AOSP based. These types of ROMs come with no manufacturer software in them (ex. HTC phones with an AOSP ROM would not have HTC Sense, Samsung phones without TouchWiz, etc.)

- CyanogenMod 10
CyanogenMod is an AOSP based rom with few but very handy features. It comes with integrated performance adjustments (as do all AOSP roms), a theme chooser (again all AOSP roms have this), and is very fast and lightweight. It has no unwanted bloatware in the ROM. CyanogenMod has a feature called Profiles that allows you to set how the phone should act under certain conditions. If I'm at work, I can have a profile called "Work" and set my phone to be set to vibrate, turn on mobile data and wifi, and set the volume of alarms and everything else to zero. If I'm at home, I can make a "Home" profile and set the ringer to high with wifi mobile data and bluetooth on to connect to my home speakers, and set the volumes of my alarms to high so I won't wake up late for work the next day. Most AOSP ROMs include Profiles, however. CyanogenMod is pure and lightweight and is therefore very fast and fluid.
- Paranoid Android
Paranoid Android is a ROM that is recognized greatly by its Phone/Phablet/Tablet mode UI settings. That means you can control:
- Per App DPI
- Per App Colors (Statusbar, Icons, NavBar)
- Per App UI (Phone, Tablet, Phablet)
- Per App Expanded Mode (FullScreen)
- NavBar Height
- AOKP
AOKP is a custom ROM distribution for several high-end Android devices. The name is a play on the words "Kang" and "AOSP" (Android Open Source Project). AOKPs defining feature is its ROM Control setting. It allows you to totally customize the UI (as in, add software buttons, or customizable toggles, and the ability to help you make tacos). You can completely change the way it looks through this setting. A list of most of the ROM Control features includes:
- Custom Carrier Label
- Custom Notification Background
- Notification Count
- WiFi Network Name in Expanded Statusbar
- Kill-All-Button in Recents
- Recents RAM Bar
- Hold back to kill
- IME Switcher
- Lefty Mode
- Customizable LCD Density
- Menu UI Overflow (3-dot Menu Button)
- Quick Pin unlock
- Menu Unlock
- Custom Lockscreen Wallpaper
- Custom Lockscreen Text Color
- Lockscreen Battery Percentage
- Volume Wake
- Volume Music Controls
- Lockscreen Targets (3-8)
- Lockscreen Weather
- Lockscreen Calendar
- Lockscreen Rotation
- Create Own Custom Vibrations
And much more... - RootBox
Rootbox is a ROM designed so users can enjoy a pure Android experience combined with CyanogenMod/AOKP/Paranoid Android features. Aside from the features from AOKP, CyanogenMod, and Paranoid Andriod, Rootbox allows for:
- Lockscreen Alignment (Left, Center, Right)
- Showing Standard Lockscreen Before Unlock
- Lockscreen Hardware Keys Action (Media actions, Toggle Sound, Toggle Flashlight)
- Alarm Icon toggle
- Expanded Desktop (Hide NavBar & Statusbar)
- Hardware keys remapping
This ROM is for those who want to take their phone to the extreme and/or can't decide between any other ROM.
Quick Descriptions Of Stock-Based ROMs
- Warp OEM
"Warp OEM is a minimalistic, performance-centered ROM for the ZTE Warp with a custom-themed twist on the Warp's stock interface designed to deliver a professional look and feel."
The above basically explains everything there is to know about the ROM. It was made by Mercury0x000d, and is more than just fast and stable... IT'S ALMOST UNHOLY. There isn't anything thats really unnecessary in the ROM, and the apps included are extremely slim, lightweight, and usable for the everyday user. Like the other stock-based ROMs in this section, it contains Adreno 205 GPU tweaks for Gingerbread, making it even faster. I recommend this to anyone who is new to the community as a first ROM to try. - HaloBean ROM
HaloBean ROM is made to be a heavily Jelly Bean themed ROM thats still fast and stable. Of course, the heavy theming took a bit of a toll on speed, but that's not stopping the ROM at all. The ROM features (as well as heavy theming) LMT Pie launcher, Paranoid Android live wallpapers, Beats+MegaBassBeats+xLoud, and the Sony Bravia Engine. Bugs do appear from time to time, but its not usually anything major. As with all ROMs, and this one especially, wiping /data before flashing and not restoring data from old ROMs will help with bugs. This one seems more sensitive to other data than most ROMs. It's based on HVLOROM by BLVCKHVLO, which is soon to make a comeback as SkinnyHALO as well. I'd suggest this ROM for people who like heavy theming and probably the color blue as well
- DroidSmith ROM
