I'm new user to here. Today I'm going to give you some tips about how to protect your nexus 5. We always face some problem for many viruses, batteries or some other problems. But if we follow some rules we can protect our nexus 5 and keep it damage free.

1. At first we need to replace the screen protector. We should buy a new one which one is best in the market. It'll save our nexus 5 screen from scratch.

2. Always close apps after use. Sometimes we forget to close them and we minimized it. It's harmful for battery.

3. Never Use your nexus 5 when it's in charging. Your battery can loss it's capacity.

4. Always try to charge your nexus 5 by switch of the handset.

5. Try to use a flip cover.

6. Never use any anti virus software or apps in your nexus 5 . It'll be the reason for low charging.

7. Never play games with playing music. Sometimes Multi tasks can create problems.

1. Have never used a screensaver in several years of using Android phones and not scratched one of them. Just be careful

2. Leave apps open. They will use more battery reopening themsleves in the background if they need to do something anyway

7. Just plain wrong. Your N5 is a multi-tasking dream machine. Let it fulfil its potential


Some of these may have been true years ago when phones were not as good and Android was in its infancy but things have moved on.

Re. nos. 1 and 5: I use a screen protector and the screen is just as visible and responsive as without. I take your point about being careful, but accidents can and do happen. As I have greasy skin (!) I make a point of giving the screen a wipe at least once a day with a clean cloth and if any small, but sharp, particle should find its way on there I can imagine it causing a scratch.
I also use a flip case. Should I drop it, or drop something on it, I'd feel a lot more confident that the screen is protected by a substantial layer of leather.

Re. no. 6: I installed Avast (free) antivirus. I've read posts on here and elsewhere stating that if you buy apps only from the Google Play Store, they are virtually guaranteed to be virus-free. However, does this apply to e-mails and web sites? Unless I'm absolutely convinced that I need not worry about viruses or other malware, I'll keep my AV; and it includes an anti-theft component too.

In 5 years of Android phones I've never bothered with a screen protector, never closed apps, always use it while on & charging, never used anti virus stuff, don't game but the phone can handle a multitude of tasks at once.

Not saying following your advice isn't a good idea for the paranoid, just saying IMO it's unnecessary.

I prefer protective covers like the Ballistic Shell Gel.

As for the battery "tips", they are inaccurate rubbish.

I couldn't agree more.

2. Leaving apps on may use some battery power, but there's no way it will damage the battery.

3. I sometimes use my Nexus whilst it is charging (for example, when it is connected via USB to my laptop) and I have yet to see any effect on the battery.

4. I usually charge mine whilst it is in standby, but I see no reason why it couldn't be left on.

6. I use an AV programme (whether this is necessary or not is debatable) and it has no effect on charging.

7. I don't play games with music, but the thing is designed for multi-tasking for heaven's sake!

In regards to battery charging, and similar:

The battery is charged in parallel to the device. In order to charge the battery, the charger has to supply a higher voltage to "push" current into the battery. Using a device while it's charging isn't an issue since it will get power from the charger, primarily, not the battery. This will have the effect of just taking longer for the battery to charge. If the supplied power from the charger isn't enough to charge or maintain a charge to the battery while the device is in use, this will drain the battery, but at a correspondingly slower rate than it would normally. Charging Li-Po/Li-Ion cells at slower rates isn't bad for them (it might actually be a little better for them). The only issue really might be from extra heat being generated while the battery is being charged and the device is being used which could conceivably add a little extra wear on the battery, though I would estimate that this is likely an insignificant amount (keep in mind that the battery will be being charged at a slower rate too, while the device is in use).

Good practice would be to not fully discharge (use) your Li-Po/Li-Ion batteries until they're "dead" too frequently, and especially to not leave them fully discharged for extended periods of time. (This battery type behaves a little differently than the old NiCd cells do, which like to be fully cycled more often than not [provided reverse charging from cells in serious isn't an issue, and they aren't left on a "dumb" charger to slowly roast after they're fully charged], and they don't mind being stored completely discharged.)

I hope this helps clear a few things up.

I normally recharge overnight (not every night) from something below 50% charge, usually between about 20% and 30%. The charging period, then, would last for 7 or 8 hours and after that time, of course, the battery would read 100% charge.

This is exactly the same practice I've used for the last 5 years with 3 Android phones bud, never had to replace a battery, never been concerned the battery has suffered (because in my case, it hadn't)

Yeah, what ^they said.

These modern phone chargers (including power supply and battery circuit) are "smart." They stop charging when the battery is full, and if I'm not mistaken, won't resume charging until the battery is detected as being a little lower than full. This is determined by cell voltage.

Agreed, we shouldn't make it personal. However, you guys have the power and should be locking terrible threads like this. It's cluttering up the forums and these kinds of posts, that are dictatorial in their composition, are bound to draw this kind of response.

Also, it sends a clear message to the OP that this kind of post is not what we're looking for here. A quick message of why you've locked it and next time the OP might refrain from such a pointless and inaccurate post.

All of the suggestions are just plain madness and the way they are worded, e.g. "Never ...", is extremely patronising.

We can be the judge of whether we need a screen protector, and we certainly don't need to buy the best one on the market. I think most of us can work out a screen protector will stop our phone getting scratched.

Never use any apps on your Nexus 5!! Now this may just be a case of poor English. Never use anti virus, that's plain bad advice.

Telling us never to do something that anyone with half a brain can establish will increase battery drain. If I want to play music when I'm playing a game then I will.
