Help OS Update - how to stop it!

Hi

Apologies if this is an old question but I'd appreciate some advice.

I've just bought a Moto G and every day I get a reminder about updating to KitKat. I've heard lots of nasty things about KitKat on this phone and I'm quite happy with what it's running now thank you.

Questions...
1. Can I turn this pesky reminder off? I read somewhere that I would have to root the phone first which isn't something I've ever done. The warnings and disclaimers on the Moto site scared me a little to be honest!

2. I've also seen people say that after a certain time period Moto just ignores this reminder and dumps KitKat on the phone anyway?? I had a chat session with them last week on the subject of removing this reminder and was told the update was "mandatory". I pointed out that I had no wish to update to a version that was buggy and the agent said they were testing a new version at the moment. I said OK - I'll update when that version is available but she then went back to the "it's mandatory" spiel. Do they push it out regardless of whether you want it? If so - how can it be stopped? The phone appears to work fine at the moment so I want them to leave me alone!!

Not had a problem with the update what so ever. It's always worth doing a factory reset after a major update.

It has already been pushed onto your phone and it is asking for permission to install it. It will keep begging until you tell it to go ahead. Do a Factory Data Reset after the update. The majority of the problems you hear about after the update are from people who did not do a Factory Data Reset.

The only way I know to stop the begging is to root your phone and rename the installation file. (I have read about it and have never done it.)

OK dumb question time....will doing that FDR have any effect on the contacts etc on my SIM?

+1 what Thom said. I don't have the phone (yet), but have been doing an awful lot of reading up on it, and from everything I've read, most people have been very happy with Kit Kat. The xda forums have a whole slew of very satisfied Moto G Kit Kat users.

I don't understand the question about your SIM.

A Factory Data Reset will delete all apps that you added, all contacts, and all customizations. It is a pretty big deal.

It is popular to backup your contacts and e-mail with Google and then restore after doing the Factory Data Reset.

The reason for doing the Factory Data Reset is that there are simply too many variables and too many possibilities for something to be out of sync. You can spend an awful lot of time trying to solve some oddball problem that never would have occurred if you'd done the Factory Data Reset.

The reason the manufacturers/carriers push the releases out the way they do is simple ... they are reducing the number of variations in their software that have to be supported ... to one. If you stopped the update you are root-ed and the warranty is void and they don't support it anyway.

I'd do some sort of backup anyway because I'm like that.

In short, what are the alleged benefits of this upgrade? From an outsider's point of view it just seemed a bit like upgrading XP to Vista and when I was asked to do that for some of my users they chased me with big sticks.......All I have seen are reports of calls dropping out, battery life draining and Airplane mode turning itself on - I don't recall if a Factory Data Reset was applied in those cases though. I guess I'm a bit "If it works then don't try and fix it".

If you sign in with a valid Google e-mail address, your contacts will be backed up to the cloud automagically. This way if you log into Gmail on a computer you will see all your contacts there as well. When you get a new phone, your contacts are synced then. It's a great system.

I'll give you that. I did sync my SIM contacts with Google last week as I was moving to the new phone and also to a new SIM i.e. my old one is standard and the new phone needed a micro. I also took backups using an app - you can never have too many backups in my view!

For the moto g jellybean to KitKat is more like going from windows 7 to windows 7 service pack 2. Its mostly under the hood and does good things you will notice a change in color tho

Updated as soon as I was notified (GSM US model). Never did a FDR. No problems whatsoever.

With regards to "why should I go to KK?" ... the real answer is ... you don't have a choice ... that's the way it is.

If you want to get involved up to your nose ... root your phone violating the warranty and do whatever you please. Otherwise ...

Backup (you should be doing that anyway)

If it is a major upgrade (like JB to KK) do a Factory Data Reset AFTER the update.
If it is a minor upgrade the Factory Data Reset should not be needed.

Yeah, I remember that with the dumb phones, there was a setting on the phone that allowed you to copy your phone book the SIM card.


I tamed some of those VCR creatures; had 'em domesticated and everything.

When I first got a mobile I guess some of you were still in short trousers. Back in those days when user guides were written in Latin on animal hides, you were given a little SIM card which was 'you and your number'. You could also save Contacts to it which made swapping phones dead easy.

Oh well, I've told the Moto G to download and install the update......

I hope I don't regret this and the phone is thrown in a drawer until Motorola fix the bugs they are already aware of.......

Yes sometimes that is why you keep it plugged in

Try another reboot. Also, next time you do any kind of update, make sure you're well powered (preferably plugged in) and if possible, do it over wifi.

Yes. That's why you should charge to 100% before you start the update.

The first 2-3 days the battery will seem to discharge too fast. This is normal. After 3-4 days you should see what battery life really is like.

You are going to do the Factory Data Reset ... right?

For those who have SD cards (us Maxx users don't) there should be an option when you do the Factory Data Reset asking if you want to wipe the SD card. Do what you please.

Thanks for the heads up on the battery. It's 100% now so I'll see how it goes this week. I'm quite a light phone user so normally this sort of phone will last me 2-3 days on a full charge.

If all appears to be well on the surface (as it does now although I've just put a curse on that haven't I....) is there a need to do the reset?
