1. A case....I have this one:Amazon.com: 7 Bundle Pack For HTC Hero CDMA Sprint Case+Charger+Pro: Cell Phones & Service
2. If you don't have a gmail account, embrace the Google cloud (quote from another thread) and get one. It will def help your experience
3. A larger sd card is a good idea
4. Take two hours and play. Click every menu, swipe every screen, tap every title. The best way for you to make the phone your own is to learn it yourself.

here is a great link to a fairly updated guide. it is gsm, but it can give you a general idea...HTC Hero New User Guide Nimbu

thanks so much for this site info...as i read this first point below...how do i know the latest available ROM...my build # says 1.56.651.2

Make sure you are running the latest ROM build, if not, update to the latest your carrier/HTC provides before you do anything else. As updating the ROM wipes the data off your phone, doing this first means you will not lose anything! Check out the HTC Support website for your Country and Carrier to see if there is an update available!
To see if you have the latest update compared to that on the HTC website, check here on your Hero:
Settings > About Phone > Build Number

Useful apps:
Astro- file manager, app backup
Ringdroid- make ringtones/notification tones/alarms from your mp3s
Yellowbook
SMS Backup- save text messages to gmail account (a must have if you like to save texts because large text threads create a lot of problems on the Hero)
OI Shopping list
Astrid task manager- will notify you of deadlines

And make sure to save contacts as "google" and not "phone" so they will be backed up

And periodically update profile and PRL under menu-settings-about phone-system updates, and rebooting the phone helps keep the phone snappy
