Actually, their power adapter is one of the reasons the Tylt Vu is better. It is not limited to USB current output. It has three charging coils to give it more compliance to where the phone's power receiver is at. That is one reason it needs more power.
I have another charging pad that did not have a power adapter with it and it performs better with some USB chargers than it does with others.
This way Tylt knows what the DC input is.
I've had mine for a week now. I used it for overnight charging once, but it woke me up when it reached full charge, I think. (I heard something - a vibration maybe? The phone is silent overnight.)
I'm now using it to spot charge - such as when I'm in the shower. I'm still trying to think of how I'm going to use it long-term.
It's a great device, though - perfect for the Maxx.
I use the app Sound Profile to mute all but my ringer at night, and my Maxx is silent going on and coming off charge. I noticed there's an option in settings > sound for "battery full notification." You may want to verify that's left unchecked.

Great charger, but I don't think it's my long-term solution at night. I use an app to make my phone a night clock/alarm while charging. The problem with this wireless charger is that it cuts power to the phone once it's fully charged, which then turns off the clock mode. So it really defeats the purpose. I want to be able to see the clock at any time through the night and I can't with this charger.
You might try a NFC tag, you can program it to do what you want and use it at night, that way you can still charge without going into night mode. Just stick it on the back side and you can touch it to it at night to set and again in the morning to put everything back to normal.

If on a charger cable the screen dims after the allotted time but is still visible.
If on the TYLT charger the screen goes black after the allotted time.
Before I had the TYLT I turned my Maxx off at night and charged it while I slept. Now I no longer do that and simply place it on the TYLT when at my workstation.
