Storage space low question

I am getting 2 notifications: "phone storage space is getting low" and "phone storage is running low". When I click on either notification I get a list of apps.

What am I supposed to do?
Why is this happening?

Thanks for your help!

Well, it does appear that the notifications are giving you the info you need; too many applications.

Before mulling over which ones to get rid of, I'd go into settings/applications/manage applications and hit menu and select "list by size," then I'd start clicking the biggies and clearing caches.

If that didn't stop the notifications, I'd think maybe it's time to make some decisions about which apps I can do without.

Sorry to be a dunce, but how do you clear the cache??

I described that in my post up there.. the path to the cache for each application is in settings/applications/manage applications..

..then click menu and click "sort by size."

After it's finished sorting (you'll see sizes in megabytes listed by each app) start clicking each app and you'll see a "clear cache" button for each one.

I do that procedure regularly to keep my Eris up to snuff.

I should add this: when you're finished clearing caches, turn off the device and then turn it back on ("reboot").

If the notifications are still appearing, I'd suspect a rogue app eating up memory.

Also make sure you've not got your disk full of other things; pics, etc.

If all that fails, you may have a lemon. Have it looked at by a tech at Verizon.

First, thanks to everyone who responded here.

I have removed a number of apps; I have cleared the caches; I have deleted a bunch of old emails and I have rebooted. I still have the notification.

My storage space shows:
Internal phone storage: available space 5 MB
SD card: Total space 7,572 MB, available space 3,048 MB

What next??

I think you might have stumped us lol. Hmm... Have you figured it out yet? Question for ya... Are you rooted or no? If so, have you installed a new ROM that might take up more space than the other one you had? (I am just curious... I haven't looked at the size of the roms or anything, just suggesting something new since there haven't been any posts).

Mine shows I have 41 MB left of internal phone storage. I'm running Aloysius v7, with about the same number of apps that I used to have installed and used to have about 70MB free or so.

Ok, those aren't that big so it isn't one or two apps killing it.

You still only have 5 MB of internal space?

How many 3rd party apps do you have?
Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Menu > Filter > Downloaded (may be a different name on 1.5)

How many text messages do you have on the phone?

How many emails do you have in the mail app?

How many emails do you have in gmail?

How many contacts do you have in people?

I keep my gmail very clean , not many contacts (maybe 30), a couple dozen texts since clearing them earlier. Still have stupid icon.

Total Space: 6.88GB
Available space: 6.19GB
(SD CARD)

Internal available space: 12.25

Have you considered performing a factory data reset? Seeing as though you've almost deleted everything off of your phone anyway....;)

What applications have you downloaded?

I'm having the same issue. It started today. I haven't downloaded anything recently and a few days ago I deleted all of my text messages. I did notice that mail is using 35+MB and maps is using 8MB.

I deleted all of my mail accounts and no space was reclaimed. I even rebooted the phone twice. It appears that mail is the culprit but I fear the only way to fix it is to reset.

I've been searching for a fix all day.

Why must you reboot the Eris?

Also, check your text messages and mail (if using other than gmail) to make sure you do not have an overabundance of messages in either. Keeping large amounts of text or email on your phone also eats memory.

Thanks, I never thought of that. I assume call history takes up the memory also?

I'm on 2.1v3 and have been having the same problem off and on for a couple of weeks. I keep my phone clean of cache, call history, old text messages and emails, and have uninstalled all large and/or unused apps. I first noticed the problem when I had around 58 applications, but even after I dropped down to 50, it was only a few days before the notification was back so maybe there is another memory-eating culprit. I think a factory data reset may be in order if no one else has ideas...

An idea is to register for a profile at AppBrain, and post your list of installed applications here. Perhaps forum members can help isolate a known memory hog.

I use AppBrain often, so I can post my list to see if those of us struggling with memory have commonalities. However, I'm considering just moving ahead with a reset because I want to try the race condition root exploit, and it appears that people who flash the RUU have more luck.

Cool. Good luck, and let us know how successful (or not) you are.

Clever name for it, hadn't heard that.
