Help HTC One M8 Screen flicker?

Ok I haven't been able to find much online about this. Went to two Verizon stores this week to see both units suffer from a screen flicker issue. It's not the screen goes black or anything, it's the brightness kind of flickers when navigating, using the camera, most noticeable on white backgrounds. I thought it had to be the crappy lighting they had but they both did this.

Is this something to do with the batch Verizon got for demos? Their software or what?

I really am considering this phone but wanted to know if this is an issue others are noticing.

The ones in the stores on display take one hell of a beating. I suggest you buy one for yourself. If it flickers then return it. No reviewers on the internet has noticed that type of a problem.

I've been meaning to reply to this thread for a few days. Seeing a frustrating reply pop up sucks...

The display phone, on Day 3 of release week, is still 'brand new'...not beat up. Reviews on the internet mean nothing. The lack of evidence is not a positive proof of its non-occurrence.

The One (M7) had a similar flickering display issue. See here:
AndroidForums.com | HTC One (M7) - White Screen Flickering

The first thing to try is to turn off auto brightness. Right after that head to the power saver settings and ensure that ALL power saving options are disabled.
Showfloor lighting has been known to be very problematic for automatic brightness.

Also note: The One (M7) line was built with a number of different display panels from different display manufacturers. There is always the chance that one manufacturer or panel model, despite calibration, could exhibit unique characteristics independent of the others.
While the same display discrepancies have not as of yet been shown for the M8, with HTC the distinct possibility is on the table.

There could be any number of applications installed to the device. Or even CPU/chipset level options and enhancements put into place by Qualcomm.

I have the phone! It's not flickering. You can't tell me every employee and person who wants the phone doesn't test out the display model. If you work for a carrier, I find their folks to be incompetent.

If he has his own phone why would he need to take all those steps? That's just asinine advice. That means there is nothing wrong with the phone period. But the M8, then come talk to me. You are in the M8 forum. This isn't the M7.

Thanks for the replies guys, I likely will just buy it and see what happens, just strange that 2/2 stores had phone showing this.

Thanks man, I did turn the auto brightness off and it still did it, it may of been less but it may have been placebo effect too.

I'm glad there's not 50 replies in here showing similar issues with their phones. This helps, thanks.

I recently purchased HTC one m8 from Verizon and my screen flickers.

Is it flickering repeatedly or does this happen as the screen is about to timeout and you touch the screen? If it's flickering, you'll have to take it back. The manager at the store will agree or disagree whether to give you a return based on his/her view.

And ask how to escalate if it doesn't go your way.

I've seen this sort of issue on other models from time to time.

At first, everyone claims innocence, but once they've had a few returns, the manufacturer will confirm the issue and then there's usually less hassle.

If your local Verizon still refuses, and corporate won't help, please contact HTC for coverage.

Keep us posted, we're all pulling for you.

You've been quiet. Still running your EVO 3D or you up to a One now?

My 3D is still going strong but only as a media appliance, it's plugged in to my TV at the moment. :D

I got the Evo 4G LTE on launch day in 2012 - traded my og Evo, caught a sale - fifty bucks out the door.

I came this >< close on the One, waited to see what else was shaking - and did nothing.

The M8's really appealing because of the SD card, and I like the new camera app a LOT. Been poking around to see who's modding that and what the options would be. But obviously, I don't have objections to the Ultrapixel approach. :)

Waiting two years has made it very affordable, but I'm just not sure about the height.

But I am sure that I'm tired of speakers that sucks compared to it. :D

Very valid points. I have my 2 phones on a rotation so I can upgrade every year.

I don't have NBA player hands but I can mauever this phone around with ease. The height definitely helps with viewing videos. I think if the power button was on the side I would accidentally turn it off all the time.

I have no use objections - just pocket fitting. :p

QFT!

This is my main concern with this phone. I'm going to give it a try and see what it feels like, I carry my phone in my front pocket.
I walked around the local Store with the dummy unit in my pocket, and it wasn't too bad, but it was paper light. We'll see what the full heft feels like. :)

On a side note, the dev community is working on removing the on screen nav buttons and applying Pie or whatever the user specifies. I'd really dig a swipe up from the bottom to make them appear / disappear. Ok, enough off topic posting for me. :p

@ jeanniekb absolutely take it in and let us know how it goes. Duds happen, I've had a few myself. :(

I would agree, that HTC could have given us options in regard to the on screen buttons. I don't even notice the bezel and the space those buttons take up. But I kind of wish the buttons disappeared in everything and you can recall them by a gesture or hitting the HTC logo. Sucks you can't go full screen with Chrome either.

Just spent 15mn trying out that HTC One M8 in a T-COM shop in Germany and that flicker is clearly noticeable especially during text input on white background.
That's a massive show stopper. Can't believe they ship €700 phones like this.
Hope they get it fixed soon cause that device is otherwise most impressive.

While they are fixing that bug if they could also get the home screen and app list work in landscape mode that would be fantastic :)

Troubling indeed
Of course I shouldn't have expected HTC to change its ways, and unify its display manufacturers supplies or figure out how to properly calibrate the entire line of displays to be as similar in visual nature as possible...
HTC One Display - Luck of the Draw... - xda-developers

For those that had taken issue to the fact that the landscape screen interfered with their polarized glasses, there is an interesting observation enclosed above ^

Soooooooo I should feel "lucky" to be able to use my polarized sunglasses in landscape view? Portrait view is not visible with the polarized lenses. Or, if i was really lucky (by the "luck of the draw") i should be able to view in both landscape and portrait?

Well, get really lucky and do what I did.

Next time you update your sunglasses, switch to circularly polarized lenses ;) :)

Linear polarization means that there are fine lines etched into the glass. Put two of them together at right angles and they block (basically) all light. Circular polarization (basically) avoids the problem.

Sorry, that's the best I can suggest.

Good advice, but i wonder if that would make potrait good and landscape problematic? Oh well, i need reading glasses to function the phone anyway. Just a curious quirk, like the lower right corner speaker grill not setting flush. Ive been to all the local corporate stores in my locale and they all have the uneven grille. I'll live with it. Tired of searching. Love what this phone does. Thanks for the response.
