Meeting with Rogers - Part II (informal)

Folks,

GBD, Mike and I are meeting with Rogers very informally tomorrow. This is not an official meeting. However, if there are any specific questions (keep it high-leve, not detailed) which you want to ask, let me know.

Either reply to this thread of send a private message to me.

Cheers!

Again, this is very informal and nothing official, so keep the questions very very high-level.

. Can we shutdown the Android sniffer service that cuts data? At worst can everyone that has called in and answered "yes" to "did you update?" be taken off future cutoffs? I can't test or develop because of this irritant. (and all my phones are 911 safe)

. Enable the call forwarding options that all phones have but don't work. Why prevent me from using an option such as forward when unavailable? The all or nothing call forwarding option while seeing options I want but can't use is very old fashion. We pay dearly for the privilege of having these phones so stop holding us back with arbitrary tactics.

. Give us a little bit more to make me feel like I'm getting my monies worth and can approach the potential we hold in our hands. (see my first two requests)

They've added a lot of phones over the last while. I want to know if that trend will continue or if they will scale back. Specifically I'm hoping for higher end, subsidized options other than the X10 (i.e HTC Desire, Incredible, or EVO, but I can't imagine they'll be willing to be that specific...)

Given that their standard answer whenever they are asked about 2.1 release date, or new phones is usually "We can't comment on things that haven't been announced yet", I doubt that the answers would be any different this time.

Even if they did give us real answers, they would probably be "off the record" and we would be told not to tell anyone, which is really kind of pointless.

But, we can ask. :)

I hadn't really thought about it too much yet. This is supposed to be step one of their follow-up to the meeting we had at the head office, so I imagine it will be them (hopefully) telling us about what their plans are for supporting Android going forward.

I'm sure we will ask about 2.1, but I'm not optimistic for an answer, since they are at the mercy of HTC, and if they had a date, they likely would have already posted it.

I think we'll probably hammer them some more on the issue of rooting, and the necessity to offer non-customized phones.

I, like everyone, want a resolution to the data issue, especially since I still haven't updated my Magic yet.

I think I'll probably ask them for details about the coming 2.1 update for Magic, whether or not it will fix the bugs caused by the 911fix, and what they will do for Magic owners who updated and ended up with so many problems (like BigDog is having, and others, XBrav, etc).

I'm hoping to hear from them that they understand the rooting issue (I know there are QA guys in Rogers working on android who understand it) but they are a big corporation in it to make money, so...

We did ask about it. Mary says it shouldn't be happening to people who have done the 911 update (I think they are assuming that anyone who has this problem either has a rooted phone, or hasn't updated and found a way to "fool" them).

If you have run the 911 update, and your data is still being cut off, contact RogersMary directly and tell her so she can look in to it.

That statement from Rogers is rather D'uh, of course if I do exactly as they say I shouldn't get cutoff. Trying "fool" them is a rather insulting notion. My daily phone is not a contract phone and I will not be told that I have to run their ROM. I bought my own unlocked phone and I'm not going to lock it down. I need to be able to use it across the border and across the pond. Besides I like the rom of my choosing much better. If I buy an N1 I'll guess I'll have the same problem.

I did update, just not their version. And I updated before they finally clued in on the 911 bug. I took care of my own safety so don't need to hear their concern for my safety, I already took care of that.

Well that isn't the problem obviously so looking into it won't help. My phone is on a business plan. My family has 3 phones on a family plan and I want to add data to theirs but given this nonsense I still haven't done it. Doesn't look like I will but I can easily just switch providers so that is looking like the best option. I give up.

Thanks for keeping in contact with them. Being first on the block with Android was nice for them but they still don't get it. Oh well.

Are you talking about the 3G problems? Rogers has NO input whatsoever on the N1, you buy it unlock from Google, not Rogers...if you get a data plan from Rogers, 'data cutoff nonsense' shouldn't be an issue since it's not a Rogers phone...I feel that this only applies to the Rogers phones like the Dreams/Magic.

Yes I know that. My service was originally setup with a contract Magic, that phone is being used by my daughter so that I can keep it stock running their official version. I use unlocked phones and am prone to being cutoff unless I use the exact version of radio that they expect. So I'm assuming that even an N1 would be cut only because they still have the original IMEI on file. I don't want to change the waiver each time I change phones.

To be sure, if by the slim chance I stay with Rogers I will not sign another contract. Just for fun I ran an iPhone (not as much fun as an android) and guess what happened on day 2.... Getting off contract should then stop this nonsense.

If you buy an unlocked phone from Rogers and use it on AT&T in the US, then there would be a bug if you try to change the ROM from theirs? Does the same apply to TELUS or just Rogers?
I don't understand your question. You don't buy unlocked phones from rogers, I'll assume you mean an unlocked phone that used to be locked to rogers. What bug do you mean? If you root it then you can put any appropriate rom on it. Of course you have to have the right type of phone, radio, and rom that will work on the intended provider. If you mean the data cutoff then that is a rogers thing and seems to apply only if you originally bought a contract magic/dream.

Oh sorry, yeah I was talking about this 911 thing everybody is talking about (no idea what it is).

Thanks for answering.

It was a 'roller coaster' drama between Dreams/Magic users and Rogers. There are a lot of threads pertaining to this, but the gist of it from my understanding was that Dreams/Magic phones had an issue with making 911 calls (i.e. 911 didn't work on their phones). Someone from Vancouver notified Rogers in September about this issue but Rogers never looked into it until December (months later). Also, in the US, the sisters phones to the Drams/Magic with Verizon/AT&T also had the 911 issues and they got an OTA update to fix it immediately. People question why Rogers didn't act earlier on the issue.

So when Rogers rolled out the update, they basically bullied all the Dreams/Magic users into installing the update that was not perfect and people were complaining about issues they were having with their phones after the update. So some Dreams/Magic users decided not to install the update and got their data cut off...or something like that....so yup...isn't Rogers just lovely?
