Root [HOW TO](gaining root)unlock, downgrade, and achieve s-off with htcDev

Thanks for the reply - I will proceed! Regarding the activation, I've tried calling and calling until my face turns blue, but the phone never seems to actually begin to make any kind of call. I asked Verizon support about it, and they said it wouldn't work unless I was near a tower in the U.S. (am in Italy for a few months.)

So I have been thinking about rooting my phone for a while and now, but to be honest I dont really know much about it. I decided to try and root my old thunderbolt if i mess it up im notout anything. I have been through lots of different links and finally found this sticky. I have already unlocked the TB using the HTCDEV and am not sure where to start in the process now that I have found this. Reading through I see about Hboot. and the one that my phone has is 1.08.0000. Can someone tell me where to start in the process or if there is something else I need to do? About the phone from what I understand. Android version is ICS, it is unlocked, s-on, Hboot 1.08.0000, radio 2.03.00.0201r

Thanks for the help.

You are in the wrong forum. This is for the original droid incredible, and will NOT work on the thunderbolt

The guide you need is here: http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?p=5544307

Just holler in that thread if you have questions :)

Thanks for the help! Everything was fine until step 4 - when I entered "adb push flash_image /data/local/", the next line read "error: device not found." Do you have any suggestions as to why this might have happened?

here are some basic steps for troubleshooting adb connectivity:
troubleshooting connectivity issues:
*make sure you have changed to your adb/fastboot directory!
*make sure usb debugging is enabled(checkmarked) to use adb in the OS
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.
-windows 8 has been known to have issues. try a windows 7 or older machine

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (mirror)

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities

-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot(not hboot!),enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.

I have tried and tried again, but I just cannot get unrevoked-forever.zip to install. All I get is:
-- Installing: /sdcard/unrevoked-forever.zip
Finding update package ...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /sdcard/unrevoked-forever.zip
(status 6)
Installation aborted.

I do not know why this does it, I re-installed OS 2.2 twice, flashed every file listed twice( execpt unrevoked), I checked everything with md5sums, and seems OK. I don't know what is the problem. But my phone is rooted, has recovery, OS 2.2, HBOOT-1.02.0000, RADIO-2.15.00.07.28, but S seems to refuse to turn off, why? (It seems my phone is partially unhackable at this point, did I miss something?) Did I mention my phone has no problem to it whatsoever! Also I cleared all types of cache when needed. Even redownloaded the files multiple times, And Yes it is Unlocked. EDIT: Please do not answer this question, I have found the answer myself. The file( unrevoked-forever.zip) is corrupt( Not that it shown it was, unless you count status 6 for anything. I guess "status 6" must mean for corrupt install file maybe, or not.) and I have found a working version of the file on xda forums showing S-0FF v1.3. Should I link it OP? (Now my Incredible is truly rooted! thanks for showing the way to properly downgrading it and flashing certain files! I might just install the Cyanogenmod 7.2)

Is there any way to unlock without connecting the phone to the computer via USB?

The phone will not boot at all. I can get to the hboot screen, but no further. Every time I try to boot, it gets stuck on the white "htc incredible tm" screen, and just keeps looping.

you should still be able to connect to the computer in fastboot. you can unlock the bootloader and install a recovery without a booting phone.

the commands can be run in recovery to chagne the main version,so you will be able to run the downgrade ruu.

after that, you hopefull will be able to perform a factory reset and have a phone booting in older firmware. at that point you can re-unlock,and re-install recovery and flash the s-off file.

hope that helps :)

Please correct me if i am wrong, but the Unrevoked patch is to be flashed via custom recovery correct? I downloaded the file you provided (unrevoked_forever.zip which is 172kb) and tried flashing it in both TWRP and CWM and both give me an error flashing it.

All other steps where completed flawlessly. Any suggestions?

that is correct. are you on a supported baseband? maybe you misunderstood this part:

in other words, you still need to follow the entire guide, just the steps to prepair to downgrade are entered with the phone in recovery, not the booted OS.

unfortunately, its not as simply as unlocking the bootloader and installing the forever patch. you must be on old firmware for the patch to work.

I flashed the RUU provided in your OP, basically back to froyo, but coming from the advanced HTC phone worlds, I have an understanding that certain things will not downgrade while S-On.

My current baseband is 2.15.00.07.28

cool, you are on a supported baseband,so the downgrade did work. the htcdev hboot did not get downgraded, but thats ok for our purposes :)

with newer htc phones, downgrade is not possible at all with s on,as some extra security checks are added(hboot version). older phones like the dinc, all thats needed is to lower the main version to a lower number than the ruu you wish to run.

i felt a bit of deja vu with this, and skimming back thru the thread, found this post. i found a version of forever on my pc with an matching md5,and uploaded it for you here: https://www.mediafire.com/?k4uo94243szbrj2

download that version, and make sure its md5 matches dd680a16c48b74d6d04e81e947825c56

hopefully you will then have s off :)

Will the the method as described in the OP still work today? I just picked up an Incredible for $30 and plan to use it on Page Plus. But I fear I need to do a thorough root in order to control (and hopefully completely eliminate) data connectivity. This appears to be the best guide ever, though given it's age, I'm a bit scared.
If you only want to flash Page Plus and regulate your data use, it's not necessary to root if you don't want to. You can put a widget on your phone, a standard Android (or HTC) widget that let's you turn on & off your Wifi and 3G data. Since 3G data is a battery hog, I leave mine off all the time, and only use Wifi. BTW, I'm on Page Plus as well.
