3G Eating Up Battery

Hello,

Before I posted about battery issues. I reset my phone, and it seems fine now, except for one thing. My 3G seems to use a lot of battery, especially in areas with a weaker signal.

I am thinking about getting CleverConnectivity +++Battery (or the PRO version), but I have two questions.

1.) If my 3G radio is constantly turning off and on, isn't that bad? Doesn't that wear the radio on the inside of my phone down? Or is it safe?

2.) Is there a way I can stop my 3G to stop "searching" for a stronger signal, and just seem to "accept" the signal I have and deal with it, so it doesn't use as much battery?

Thank you very much for your help! :)

Thanks,

David

I think your phone is not using 3G but 4G which is a faster version of 3G. There's a possibility that's why your battery gets drained. You should check whether your phone has a setting that allows you to only select 2G or 3G but not 4G. This should be under wireless and network settings. You can enable 2G, it will save you lots of battery power.

I have the Carrier FreedomPop, a servce provider on Sprint's nework. I don't think I can use 2G.
Also, instead of downloading that app, I downloaded CleverConnectivity +++Battery.

Does anyone know if turning my 3G radio on/off for 1 minute, 5 minutes, 1 minute etc. is bad for the radio and wears down on it?

Thanks,

David

Turn off 3g / data when not in use*.

Add a power control widget to your homescreen with buttons for data, & 3g/2g. Some roms let you add these in the notification bar also.

If you have a 'normal' network that uses 2g for calls then you should toggle 3g AND data when not needing them. If you leave data on then it will still be looking for GPRS (2g). You can leave sync on as that will only work when data is on.

*If your network is 3g based then it's best to leave that on (well actually leave it on 2g/3g as some networks that predominately use 3g also use another networks' 2g for fallback signal). Just turn data off when not using.

The problem is, I don't really like to turn off 3G. :/

Sorry for the late response.

Thanks,

Are you sure it's 3g draining your battery or do you have data on as well?

For most people leaving WiFi, BT, 3g & GPS on is fine until the phone actually starts using them.... when data is on you might find that some of your apps are checking for updates. You can change these behaviors in each apps' settings but it's easier just to toggle the data so nothing will attempt to connect to the internet in the background.

Mind you some of us are OCD about battery life so we turn off everything (apart from 2g) until we need them.

My phone is over 3years old, still with the same battery. Ever since new, i turn off 3g until needed, i have such a poor signal in my area, if i don't turn off 3g it really drains the battery. I just toggle it on in the the notification pull down, i only turn background data on to get Gmail or when i need to go to the playstore. Leaving background data on really drains my battery.
