How to delete original google account setup in phone

I just got my phone yesterday, and the verizon rep insisted he needed to setup a new google account on the phone. I didn't feel like arguing since I already have one so I let him do it. Once I got home, I setup my account and sync'd all of my email and contacts, but I cannot delete the original account he setup off the phone. I also cannot sync my calendar through my account. The phone is only wanting to sync the calendar with the account he set up. Can someone offer advice on how to delete the account he setup?

BTW, I have gone in and tried to delete the account, but the phone tells me applications need this account and in order to delete it, I will have to reset the phone to all defaults and all information will be lost.

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, if you've installed any apps they are tied to the account they used to set up your phone. If it's not a lot, just reset to factory and sign in with your own account.

I went to the About Phone that the message tells me to go to, but cannot find anywhere to reset to defaults. Am I just overlooking it?

You should be able to boot the phone holding volume down + power button, that should take you to where you can do a hardware reset.

I just confirmed you can do this. It worked on my phone.

Actually, I remember reading that you can re-run the setup wizard. I wonder if that would work to change out the sync account.

The steps to change your gmail account are the following: In Settings->Application->Manage Applications clear all data from Gmail, Gmail Storage and Google Apps. After this the phone should prompt you with the Setup wizard and there you can add your own Gmail account and you'll be able to use the Market, Gmail, Google Talk and so on.
