Root Overclocking? Idiots guide out there?

I have a new Droid that I got a week ago and know NOTHING about how it operates software or hardware. I do know that there is some way to over clock the processor. All I want to do is not make anyother changes to the phone accept over clock it. I read about this rooting thing and installing different ROMs but I love the way mine operates now on the verizon stock 2.1, but I want it faster thats all. Anyone have a simple method that can get me to my goal without doing any major changes to how it looks and operates now?

Yes I searched, but remember I dont know what half of the terms mean and its all jibberish to me.

Then download a overclock kernel here I would suggest either the 1000 or 1200

Kernel doesnt change anything other than the ability to overclock

Nope won't change anything. But make sure you get SetCPU. You have to purchase it but it is critical with an OC Droid. Make sure to set your profiles too. I'm not sure how other people are running theres but i'm at:

Normal Max 900 Min 250 min
Sleep 250 max 250 min
Charge 600 max 250 min
Failsafe 550 max 250 min

place it on your sd card not in any folder. Rename it to update.zip then reboot into recovery and install

If you are using rom manager premium (love it) make sure you have the advanced user check marked in settings.

Then download rom>P3Droid Kernels and pick the 1200 max kernel and it should install fine. But depending on your rom and how your Droid runs, you may have to try others out to find the best one.

Just make sure you make a backup.

If you aren't using rom manager premium you will have to download a kernel put it on your sd card as update.zip and flash with sprecovery.

Either way, make a backup.

dont worry about rom manager. While it makes things easy you dont want to flash other roms. Did you install the kernel as an update.zip

Also in setcpu did you select auto detect? If you selected droid that is the problem

I havent installed the kernal yet but i am in the process of it now. When I do and restart, how do I change that setting from droid to autodetect?

when you open set cpu press the menu button on the droid and then press device selection

Ok WOW. Did all this and holy shnikes this thing cooks. It boots super fast, loads the big apps in a heart beat and really seems smoother. Thanks all that helped. I also ran a speed test from one of my speed test apps for wifi and my DL speeds are way up too. Thanks again all.

Ok so now I have problems. At 1200 mhz it took literally 10 seconds and it froze up solid. Then I rebooted and lowered it to 1000. Now at 1K it was ok for like 5 minutes and then it froze. Now trying to reboot, it just freezes at the M screen. Im going to pull the battery and let it cool off for a bit, then I will try to get back in there and drop it down to maybe 600? If its not stable at 1000 then what was the point of all this?

If you made a backup, boot up into recovery and reload the backup. I would try a different kernel but I have never run into a problem like this especially if you are just running stock 2.1. You need to make sure that the kernel you downloaded is for 2.1 or ese81.

You may have to install something like TempMonitor so we can see whether it's actually overheating causing it. The CPU in the Droid can get incredibly hot before it hits its design limits, probably to the point of melting the plastic in the phone.

You may also simply be unlucky with your hardware. I run 1200mhz all the time and the phone has never locked up.

You might have to use a medium voltage kernel. If you are unlucky as stated above, the chip may be becoming unstable at higher clock speeds without increasing the voltage.

First I would get TempMonitor though to see what the actual CPU temperature is doing.

Well I let it cool off, and I was able to get back in and lower the clock speed down to 600. It seems stable there, so I think Im going to play with the 900mhz setting to see if it will work. I really had to let it cool down.

P3droid kernels work with any rom. Koush designed a kernel template that lets kernels work with any rom and P3 used it. Since those kernels are not working quite right for the op I would check out chevy's here

Hey u don't seem like an idiot to me. You rooted pretty fast for someone who calls themselves an idiot.

Edit: Oops u didnt call urself an idiot but thats real good that u oc'd and rooted so quickly. Haha. I'm not sure if this will work but i suggest pulling the battery. For some reason, that helped me everytime my phone started to heat up when i installed a new kernal. Heat issues for low voltage kernals that are oc'd at 1ghz and below should fairly be non existent.

Im an idiot that can read and follow directions pretty well. Especially when the directions are good. LOL. It now seems pretty stable set to max 900, min 500 and the mode set to ondemand.

Question. If I used advanced task killer to kill all apps including setcpu, will it not follow those settings and just go back to 500/250? Or will it stay the correct way?

I'd suggest adding SetCPU to your exceptions list.

I'm pretty sure the majority of Droids are stable up to 800MHz, and anything above just requires you to have a 'lucky' chip. Sure the kernel plays a part (voltages for each speed are determined there), but they're all pretty mature now, and the devs have a good grasp of what voltages are needed for what frequencies.

Also, I'm not sure how much of an effect having 500 as your min frequency will have on your battery life. I always keep mine at 1000/250.

So far so good, its been running 1000/250 on-demand mode all day. The temp monitor I downloaded says its been in the green. It does get a little higher when its on the charger though.

I just followed all of these steps to root and overclock my droid...

I am now having problems with blank screens or frozen screens after a couple minutes of use, then it reboots... unsuccessfully. It goes through the M screen, to the red eye, then flashes the red eye again, goes back to the M screen, goes back to the red eye screen, then finally boots but then will reboot by itself?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Turn down the frequency. That means your overclock is unstable.
