Root What is the best performing ROM for the Ace?

I hope this isn't too much of a religious question...

What is the best performing ROM for the Galaxy Ace (cooper)?

I'm not interested in the latest and greatest. The Ace has fairly limited hardware, and I'd like to install a ROM which was built with this in mind. My main goal is performance. Is CM 7.2 the way to go, or are there better ones?

This is definitely a religious question, these types of questions are banned on most forums, don't know about this one.

No one can tell you the best rom, best in performance or anything else, its always user dependent, you can get good performance out of a 4.0+ rom too if you use it wisely and you can make a stock rom lag like hell if you use it badly.

Generally stock gb and CM7 based roms should give you more ram compared to 4.0+ alternatives, and along with some other performance tweaks you can get much more out of them, but the only way to know which one you want is by flashing it and trying it in your daily use.

I take your point about the ROMs. I guess its similar to people asking which Linux distro to use on a Linux board. The question demonstrates poor form and has caused many flame wars. Sorry for that.

Could you kindly elaborate on this point please? I'd like to try and get the best performance from this phone by whatever means. What are the performance tweaks to which you are referring?

Scripts packages, mostly ram management scripts and other performance tweaks, modding the sd card read/write speeds, ext4 partitions, scheduler configs, vm tweaks, zipaligning etc.
From the top of my head things like these->
TWEAK | STABLE | Reincarnation Engine v.4 | The Most Minimal Script | 30/03/2014 - xda-developers
★ [MOD] ◢ PurePerformances

Thanks for that.

I went ahead and installed CM7.2, and am pretty happy so far. I was seriously considering buying a new phone, but this has changed the performance of my Ace so much that I can delay the purchase for a while. The ROM is very well polished, and works much better than stock in many respects.

I have some more questions though:

Upon rebooting, the /system partition is always mounted rw. I'd like to have it mounting ro by default. I'm a seasoned Linux user, so it would be trivial for me to add a script to /system/etc/init.d to change this at boot, but is there a cleaner way?

The other thing is Wifi. In order to prevent interference from our Panasonic cordless phone, I've configured my home router to always use channel 13. This means that I always have to go into the advanced wifi settings to tell CM to use 14 channels. It keeps the setting until next reboot, when I have to set this again. Is there a way to have this on by default?

Thanks for all your help. :)

I use root explorer and when i open the system its always mounted as ro, i don't know why its mounting your partition as rw by default. I think adding a script is quite clean, make it run once at boot and keep the partition mounted as ro.

I don't know about multi channel wifi routers, so can't help you there.

So after much experimenting, I found that I got the best performance with Cyanogenmod 7.2 with the overclocking version of Fire kernel. The non-oc version of fire kernel gave great battery life, but poor performance. I found that running the oc kernel with a minimum of 245 MHz and maximum of 787 MHz gave the best balance between performance and battery life. The WiFi issue resolved itself, but I wasn't able to figure out why the system partition was being mounted with read write permission at start up. Thought I'd share this for future readers.
