Are you going to get the HTC M8 -Specs, carrier, discussion, and $$$DEALS$$$

I would definitely take it back. For the price of the M8 it should be in perfect condition. The one I have does not have any dust issues, dead pixels, the color is nuetral, and all the panels are tight. I always take my phones to this website before I leave the store (it's quicker than downloading a fake flashlight app) Pure white test screen to see if there are any dead pixels. I then change "white" to "black" un the URL to verify no stuck pixels.

I have caught 2 bad phones that way and done an in store exchange.

My opinion: Never settle for less than perfection when that is what they are telling you they are selling!

Well I bit the bullet. Couldn't wait for Black any longer, as it may never arrive. Darkish aluminum will have to suffice for now.

Picked up an M8 this weekend. Made sure that the display panel color representation was good before leaving the store. The floor displays were wildly different. One very cool with bright white, the other very warm with yellowy whites. The unit I got fell between the two of them. Not too cool, not too warm, just right. It also has nice tight body panels, "clicky" volume rocker but not loose and rattling. No light bleed (getting rid of capacitive keys sure helped with that yearly issue) but viewing on an extreme angle there is a visible display panel/digitizer? lighting point under the edge of the screen surround about 1cm from the corners up the vertical sides. I'm guessing this is normal as the display had this too.

I looked for dust under the glass in store, but their store fluorescent lighting has never worked well for that. Didn't see any. Sunlight reveals dust under screen very clearly but I guess I was too excited to get home and get it on the charger. Noticed later that there is in fact dust under the glass in two areas. They are both on the edges. One almost is blended into the screen surround. However is still noticeable, like a dead pixel just on the very edge of the picture.
Practically every HTC phone I've had has had dust under screen. In the past I've gone through multiple units. It is a real problem with their suppliers/assembly.
Trying to decide if I should grumblingly accept (yet again HTC, yet again!?) this unit or return it. Don't know if I will get one that is any better, not sure if I want to "roll the dice".
I know this is a pretty personal battle but any helpful outside opinions out there? Dying to cut my screen protector, activate it, and put it into use. But not until I've come to a decision.

Uggh, you really do have the worst luck with HTC devices. Thankfully the last device I had dust under the screen issues with was the HTC Hero. Since then my string of luck has been pretty good; at least in so far as dust and light bleed go. You should probably bring it back.... you know it will drive you nuts if not :) For what it is worth my M8 was exactly how it should be right out of the box so maybe an exchange will yield the same?

Well, i've been waiting to get the M8 in silver or black, from AT&T. After reading all these horror stories about the phone, i'll have to take it outside the store and perform some testing for about half an hour, before i can make up my mind. I don't know about HTC's Quality Control Dep't. Now i'm starting to wonder about it. That N5 is starting to look better and better, and it's a damn shame, too.

:ditto:

here are definitely "known issues" as with any new device, but I think everyone can agree, even the detractors that there are no horror stories...YET muahahaha....

And grunt0300 we aren't ganging up on you, we just want to know where you are getting this information from, because despite all the issues that are out there we have yet to find anything that can be classified as a horror story. WE are all friendly here and looking forward to hearing from you, and your experience with your new M8.

On a side note:
...To my knowledge there have been no reports of HTC M8's attacking people

Maybe the terminology was a little harsh, but i don't consider "light bleeds", dust under the glass as software issues. They're quality control issues. People are not doing they're job. I've owned Samsung BlackJacks, BB Bolds, iPhones, an HTC Vivid, and an SGSIII, and i've NEVER had the issues that have been reported in these forums. It seems that the higher the price, the cheaper the quality control. Look, i want to buy the M8, but the more i read, the more i feel that i'll need a comprehensive and total guarantee on every bit of the phone, including the box that it came in.

Pyro is the first instance of dust under the screen on the M8 that I have read in any forum and I haven't read about any " light bleeds" on the M8 either (not saying either don't exist or are isolated incidents). Things to remember when reading forums, there will always be a greater instance of people airing faults because the people without them are perfectly happy. No matter what, most carriers have a return window of at least 14 days so you have plenty of time to put it through it's paces.

I guess you're right. I'll cut HTC a little more slack, and i did forget about the 14 day return policy. Sorry for the outburst, but i still believe that for all new phones, quality is going downhill.:p

Oh no worries! We were all just curious where you got that info from. I think in some cases manufacturing has gone downhill but in others it has vastly improved. In my opinion HTC just keeps getting better, in comparison to itself that is. If I compare my first HTC, the Mogul to the M8, they have moved light years ahead in design and build as well as software. Again personal opinion :D

Just picked up the M8 at Costco today. Despite the buy one, get one free deal being expired as of yesterday, according to the advertisement, the deal was still on today. Came with a nice little accessory package, too, which included a car mount and a dual car charger.

I'm loving this phone so far, though I REALLY wish that it had a removable battery. Guess I'll have to get over that. :hmpf:

I wonder if the accessory pack is different for each carrier. I had my Wife pick up an m8 from costco for me today and the accessory pack was insulting. It had a 1amp charger, super cheap headphones and a cut-to-fit screensaver. This and the rattling volume rocker means that Costco is getting the phone back.
I have sprint and costco gave me kit UCBP-XLHS.

I just pulled the trigger on the M8.
I really wanted the S5's large megapixel camera, OLED display, and removable battery, but the downsides to the S5 made me go the other way.
The 16gb S5 is the only version that is available with no release data set for the 32gb. Knox software is a big turn off for me since I love to root and rom my phones. The current root method available for the S5 trips Knox. I have a Galaxy Nexus and have about 3 extra batteries I use to swap when I need to, but the M8's reported battery life will make my habit of swapping batteries no more when compared to the anemic battery life of my current phone.
I have perused the forums for both the M8 and S5 for weeks now looking at all the pros and cons, and the pros of the M8 outweigh the S5 for me. I can live with the low megapixel camera of the M8 and non removable battery.
I felt up the M8 and S5 and they both are solid phone imo (again my current phone is a Galaxy Nexus so either phone is a big upgrade) and liked the metal feel of the M8 the most. The smooth edges are really nice and I liked the Duo camera (or whatever they call it) for focusing after I take pictures.
I am rooting for the underdog this round of the mobile wars and hope to see more quality phones from HTC in the future. This is my first HTC phone and so far I am impressed.

I ended up returning the phone. I was already cautious because of my history with HTC. I loved my first EVO and one of my EVO LTE's, but I didn't much care for the other 4 of each. You have to return phones within three days to get all of your money back and maintain your upgrade. I am leaving on a trip tomorrow and I don't trust HTC enough to risk being stuck with a new phone in need of repair.
What really had me upset was the ridiculous accessory pack, it gave me the impression that the vendor had no problem with under-delivering.

I have test patterns/colors on my MicroSD card and a list of other sites with my AV links. I know these online hosted ones will be handy in the future at some point in time (new TV, new computer monitor, etc.)

Yes, yes I do. I think alot of folks don't notice stuff. To my own dismay much of the time, I have a very discerning eye.

Returned the One M7 altogether after trying out 4 of them over 14 days, stuck with the solid Evo 4G LTE.
The dust under the screen of my Evo 4G LTE still drives me nuts, daily. I had no choice but to keep it though as it had the better color representation of the replacements they let me have an opportunity at.
I don't know if it is worth it to repeat the same process again. I guess I'm going to try though. Thanks for the opinions all.

Yeah I only brought up lightbleeds to say they are all but diminished since the M8 does not have capacitive buttons anymore. :) It was a happy post, since they have been a past issue.
No reported cases/observations I've seen. Just my own observation of a dark area near all 4 corners, far under the edge of the screen (not a light bleed)

I've seen one or two others mention dust under screen on XDA. Something I would be looking for whether or not others have mentioned it, on any phone or new device from any manufacturer.

HTC manufacturing has improved, however, when it comes to the display and glass (and the assembly thereof) I suspect it is entirely dependent upon the supply from the display panel manufacturer. The usual suspects.

Sorry about your experience. My phone has been great so far, and I definitely had a different accessory pack than you did. Costco cannot be beat for returning merchandise, though. You've got 90 days on your phone, which beats the pants off of the 14 days offered by Verizon.

A great accessory package like yours would have made a big difference. I would have given the phone another chance.

Accessory package? Are you referring to the headphones and HTC branded 1.5Amp charger that come in the HTC box along with USB cable and various packaging? I am not being argumentative here, just curious, but what else did you expect? You returned a phone because of the accessories? Again, not judging or trying to argue, I really am just curious.

I returned the phone because the loose volume rocker was more than I wanted to put up with from a flagship phone. The ridiculous accessory package was the reason I didn't give Costco another chance. Everything from HTC was great.

Sorry, I missed the part about loose volume rocker. But what is this accessory package you are talking about?
