Help Mobile hotspot/tethering problems?

Anyone having problems with mobile hotspot/tethering lately?
I have a tiered plan, so it should be included, and I've used it before (though I am definitely not a frequent tetherer), but when I turned it on this morning to try to update my Kindle, I got nothing. When I clicked the box to start tethering, the phone did the usual "checking subscription status" bit for a few seconds, and then just said "Error" beneath the checkbox.
Anyone else run into this?

Strange. Thanks for checking though. I'm still getting the error today, but every time I've tried has been at my office. I can't imagine that would make a difference, but I should try it from home tonight just to be sure...

The fun part is that since turning Mobile Hotspot on automatically disables wifi, when it errors like this I can't turn wifi back on unless I reboot the phone! I can flip the toggle to On, but it doesn't actually scan for networks and if I leave the screen and come back, it reverts to Off.

Oh, that's interesting. I have seen other people report that problem with WiFi but never thought to ask if they had been using WiFi hotspot previously. (I'm filing this mentally in case I see it again...)

I'm interested to see what happens when you try this at home, though.

Too late! I had actually already done it by the time you posted that.
On the brighter side, it did indeed fix the problem, and since I had almost everything backed up, the only things I lost were a handful of MMS messages (does anyone have a backup program that can actually restore MMS? Most of them seem to only do SMS), and the open tabs from my browser.

Take a look at "Backup to Gmail"

I've actually been using SMSBackup+ for a couple of years now. It works fine for SMS, but like I said, I haven't found anything that can actually restore MMS messages. It's not really a big deal, since like 95% of my MMS messages are from my wife and both of our phones are set to automatically upload photos to Dropbox. It's just a minor annoyance that I can't restore everything. I know Titanium can backup and restore both and I used it to great success with my old Galaxy Nexus, but since I never rooted my Maxx, that's not really an option this time around...

Hmmm, I must be missing something, because Backup to Gmail allows me to see my MMS's in Gmail on my PC and my Maxx.

Sorry, I wasn't commenting on your post, but answering the original question with another option.

FWIW, I believe that there is a specific restriction in Android that prevents MMS restoration in any app, though I think if you are rooted you may be able to avoid that.
