Root [MetroPCS] [GUIDE][EASY] How to Setup Link2SD

How to Setup Link2SD

I didn't see a complete beginner friendly guide/thread for link2sd in the f6 forum so here is an easy tutorial from my site.

By the end of this guide you'll be able to move apps and data to your external SD.

One thing I have noticed with the Aparted and Link2SD, after you link the files over to the partition of the SD card, the phone will not install apps from the PlayStore. It will doanload to 100% and stall.

However, once you unlink it and link it back again PlayStore will work fine again and apps install normally.

So far that's the only slight quirk I have found with it.

[I now have a 4Gb partition on my External SD]
These are the two errors I am getting:

My example is "Google Chrome", but I also got the same errors with other apps.

1. Move to SD Card: error:
"Failure, App2SD is not supported by your device. Because your device has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage. You can link the app in order to move its files to your SD card."

2. Create Link: error:
"Failure, LInk2SD package invalid"]

I would help you, but I have no idea where you went wrong in the guide. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Can someone with tons of apps with this method works? I had Link2SD installed earlier on a 32GB card with a 8gb partition. I would still get Out of Memory errors after a while and I still had 6gb left on that ext4 partition. I don't know why.

I moved to pressy4pie hack for more memory which has solved the Out of Memory errors but now apps and updates will slow the phone sometimes.

I may want to try Link2SD again.

I've racked up 489Mb so far on my External SD Ext. 4 partition [3.76Gb]. I guess the question is how accurate is this number? In any case, I would be running out of space on Internal SD really soon w/o it?

How to Partition SD Card and Use Link2SD in any Android Phone with Screenshots, mentions a 2nd method: "FOR CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY USERS ONLY( ALTERNATIVE METHOD)"> Step 4: Select

I think the free version of link2sd only moves the apps to the SD card but not the data files. The link2sd plus will do that for you for the price of $2.35

The plus versions does
- Links internal data directory of the apps to SD card
- Links dex files of the system apps to SD card

I was using the free version. If the paid version really works I don't mind paying for it.

If you are going to install a new ROM, do you need to "unlink" all of your apps that you "linked" in the first place? i.e. If you don't, what happens to the part of the EXT partition that's being used?

EDIT: One idea: Reformat the EXT partition? If you're going to "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" in preparation for installing a new ROM anyway, this will break all links? So, just reformat it?

EDIT2: Ah, I enjoy these silent moments! :)

I've been trying to figure out the best way to prepare concerning Link2SD. This text from this link FAQ - Link2SD:

Q. What exactly does "Clean up the 2nd partition" do?
"Clean up the 2nd partition" function scans the second partition (/data/sdext2 directory) and finds the apk and dex files that are not associated with any apps (i.e. garbage files). When finished, shows the files it found and asks for confirmation to delete them. It doesn't delete anything without your permission.

Does this seem like part of a better approach than simply reformatting the EXT partition?

You don't need to make the same posts on multiple threads or multiple times or ask me the same question multiple times lol.

It's not a silent moment, your question is just being ignored or noone has an answer for you right now. I'm only replying cause you've been asking a few times since yesterday on the 2 threads.

Most of your questions just need a little common sense. Like your link2sd question. I don't have link2sd set up right now, but common sense tells me that you can install the rom which in the process you'll factory reset and wipe everything then you can erase everything on the EXT partition and start the link2sd setup over. Again I don't have it set up, but that's what I would do. You already know how to install the rom, kernel, and link2sd since you've done all three before so this should be easy the 2nd time around.

C'mon bro we've all been helping you since you first came around with everything, but you're not a beginner anymore. Gotta make some calls on your own now lol. :p

Sorry if I'm being a d!ck. I don't mean to offend you. ;)

[I have installed a ROM on my previous [first] phone.]
And, sure, setting up Link2SD initially seems relatively straightforward [conceptually]. But, there is not much out there that I could find about this process the 2nd time around. i.e. One thing that seemed logical is unlinking everything using Link2SD just for purposes of creating a backup. It's a guess. But, does a CWM backup include that EXT partition data as part of a backup? I doubt it.

^^ Seems like you already have the answers to your own questions. :p

As for myself I wouldn't need to unlink and make a backup. I would just rely on one of my prior backups to save time and keep things simple... I keep a couple backups on my PC for safe keeping. I only backup if I'm doing something sketchy that might result in my phone being borked lol.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory [film] quote:
Character "Penn":
Assumption is the MOTHER of all **** ups!
This is why I ask so many questions [in general].

Specifically, here, I assumed that I needed a backup where [some] of my apps [the app itself and/or some type of related data] were not "floating" on another partition that might not necessarily be included in any backup? [This was my thinking... an assumption...]

EDIT: Ok, I'm really showing my ignorance here... When installing a "fresh copy" of MS Windows, I knew I always needed to reinstall all of my software. With Android, they might be a way to back up all [or most] of your apps and somehow "restore" them after flashing a new ROM?

Hi, I'm relatively new here. I've been reading posts for quite a while but never needed to ask any questions because I'm a real fast learner but i had kinda picked something up in my adventures here that could be a solution to what you're trying to accomplish here. When you are going to flash a new ROM all the files on your ext sd remain untouxhed, correct? I have gotten into the habit of having all my favorite apps stored on my external as the all files so that i can just open the file and reinstall without having to waste time downloading them again. I find it to be rather quick that way but i don't think you can back up apps like on cwm and reload them to a custom rom. But i could be totally wrong about that last statement.

You can restore apps, sms-mms, and call logs to a rom with titanium backup pro, best $6 I've spent on an app. The free version can do, but is slower and doesn't have batch process to restore/backup all apps at once.

Some users new to the app can find it a bit confusing so hers's a quick guide to walk you through.

@GT
I took a quick look at the guide. My question is does TB respect the links created with Link2SD?
