Root [Virgin Mobile] [GUIDE][MK5][WIP]Rooting MK5 4.3 for Newbies!

So I just finished rooting my new s3 following the guide and everything seemed to go as instructed. The only problem i seem to be having now is after installing UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.93.zip and MK5_STOCK_DEODEXED2.zip i reboot my phone from recovery it asks if i want to root and then restarts. but for some reason it just hangs at the Samsung galaxy s3 screen and has been there for the last 10 minutes. does it usually take this long to start up after?

This happened to me when I data wiped it. Did you do that too? Only difference is that mk5 wouldn't flash on mine

Yeah I wouldn't trust myself either lol I'll just flash MK5 if I ever have to then. they never go through settings all they do is get the serial number. They shouldn't be able to tell it's rooted from the serial number right?.....

Nah most likely for the serial they would just pull of the battery plate cause it should be there as well

I was just saying if the phone has Knox, putting a custom recovery on would have tripped the electronic counter so all they would need to do is boot to download mode and it would say how many times you flashed the phone and that the warranty is void from rooting

Which IMO is crap, they can't tell me I can root or not, its my device and rooting doesn't break it, granted I can over clock or under clock or overvolt or underfoot if I wish but I never do, just phone companies trying for more control, just like in the state I live in PA, its now a federal law that a phone cannot be unlocked(ie. Able to go to a different carrier) without direct permission from the carrier you purchased it from which again I think is crap but apple fans boys caused that for us all lol

Before I was with virgin mobile I had an s3 on at&t. I had sent back one s3 that was rooted that got screwed by taking an over the air update. They didn't check anything on my old one as far as I know. And as far as I know the only people that would check for something like that is the major phone corporations like at&t, Verizon, or Samsung USA directly. I've never had any problems with returning a phone.

I just got my virgin mobile s iii yesterday and it has 4.1.2 on it. and model SPH-L710. Baseband = L710VPAMG2.
I was able to get philz recovery on my phone using odin. I havent rooted yet because the tutorial says its for mk5 4.3

can I go ahead and finish the tutorial for rooting even though I have 4.1.2 MG2? Or do I need to get the 4.3 rom?

If you just want to gain root on your stock ROM without flashing an aftermarket ROM put the SuperSU.zip on your SD card and flash that zip in your custom recovery. You will then be rooted. I warn you, DO NOT, take an over the air update to Android 4.3 from Virgin. It installs a Knox boot loader. You don't want Knox. If you want 4.3 or 4.4 flash a custom 4.3 or 4.4 ROM without the Knox.

Do I use the SuperSU thats in the OP? and also, what about the 'Root device (/system/xbin/su)' option thats present in philz recovery? does it install root?

It should automatically do everything for you and yes the one in the OP should work or you can find the latest updated SuperSU.zip. I think the latest is SuperSU 1.93

Hey Vinnie, there is a download link in one of these threads for a stock 4.3,deodexed, without Knox bootloader and without Knox apps. I took the Knox crap not knowing about it. I then rooted and am now on CM11 4.4.2. The ROM is VERY smooth and works great. If you'd like you can change your Prl to the latest one while your still on a stock ROM, then flash the custom ROM. I also use dkp kernel and my phone is quick and battery life is decent.

Hi,

I just updated my Virgin Mobile S3 to 4.4.2 and want to root it to get my SD card write permissions back, so I'm wondering if the files listed in the OP will work here or should I be downloading something different. I'm not new to computers and such, but am new to rooting. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you :)

Rooting this build is very simple. Flash the latest philz in Odin, reboot to recovery, philz options(or settings, can't remember exactly), check reroot, yes to apply SuperSU, reboot, install SuperSU from play store, open it, yes to disable Knox, done. That simple.

Hi guys,

I'm currently on a Galaxy S3 with VM running 4.4.2 (NDC) and am looking to root it and stay with the original rom for now. Ideally for using titanium to freeze some of the shovelware and greenify to take care of the other stuff I want to keep on it. After reading a bunch of these threads I'm a little confused over which version of Philz recovery I should be using. The OP's guide is for an earlier version of the rom (4.3 MK5) and links to philz 6.00.8-d2spr. Should I use that one or the newest version of D2spr (philz_touch_6.15.4-d2spr.tar.md5)? All the other steps sound really clear.

From what I understand the D2LTE is a unified build for all the different models, but I should use the SPR one still? The newest D2LTE is 6.41.6-D2LTE.

I won't have to worry about the APN fix or MMS issues if I stay on the original rom?

Thanks a bunch!
