Hmm.. For those who have not lost hope in a stock 2.1 rom.

I like all of you have been frantically searching forums, tweets, posts, leaks, official notices, etc. for updates on the time frame, answers, and etc. for the 2.1 update.

I almost lost hope and succumbed to rooting (which is not evil, just I don't want to void my warranty since I have it insured) until I just found this:

I found this on an Dutch HTC alliance forum post from a guy that saw this at a trade show and decided to take a few snaps. (this alliance is trying to get everyone on board to confront HTC and see to it they make good on a final timeline with weekly updates). I am jumping on the bandwagon myself (no this, it's all in Dutch, so have your google chrome ready so you can hit the translation button).

It seems quite odd though for a few reasons..
1. In the second pic, it indicates that the phone has a teflon coating, and that shows as indicated by the pictures..
2. The styling of the phone looks a tad bit different.

Would this possibly be an HTC Hero 2? If so that would piss me off, as it would say nothing about an update, though it is possible I guess.


Here is the translation from what was visible in the pictures....

Was at a trade show this week and it came from the books .. I am sick of it so long, but asked whether she knew anything more .. but it was already clear: women who came just to promote, no more!

I guess it was just a big marketing ploy and that we as Hero users are stimulated to move to the Legend of Desire .. Honest its nice machines, but to them my thanks to Hero? Well, no! If I buy a phone, I assume that I can use him two years to support all of the producer of that. Nokia gives even after 3 years of updates its equipment ..

The hero (possibly the white ones only) do have teflon coatings though.

The pictures are photo's, shot from a booklet. The first one is here and here is the second one.

The texts on the first image translates to:
"HTC HERO.
If you dare. Be yourself.". Below that, on the left: "Android 2.1 is available for the HTC Hero too".

Second picture, on the right the final bullet says: "The HERO can be updated to Android 2.1". Below, in handwriting, it says: "Teflon coating for an extra white impression".

Really, it's nothing but two photo's from a booklet. Probably marketing material that is used a bit prematurely.

Just to add a lil something.. insurance and warranty are different things

you mention you don't wanna void your warranty cause you have insurance..

Would insurance cover screwing around with the phone's firmware? I doubt it, if the insurance company ever found out.

There is nothing there to suggest those are anything but normal heroes.

insurance insures your phone. If you have car insurance, N u get into an accident, would your insurance deny you repairs cause you had a header and maybe an exhaust. No. worst case u pay a deductible. There are no hidden insurance clauses like "your phone can't be rooted"

2. The 'insurance' on the phone is for wear or defects that break the phone. It covers the phone after the one year warranty expires, HOWEVER as with any carrier, if you flub your phone @ your own hand cracking it, they WILL NOT cover it for you. It nullfies the 'insurance' I am paying on it.... (though if needed, I can find a good use for a 9v battery and some wire that can make it look like a pretty good defect

To carry on with the car metaphor, bricking due to a custom ROM isn't like having an honest accident. It's more like having it break down because you thought you could get away with fitting a new engine in there yourself and it blew up in your face. Why do you think it costs so much more to insure a car if you've modified it in any way?

The good thing with insurance is, If I brick it, Ill stamp on the screen, or lose the phone, and claim for that, knowing I have my backups safley stashed away

Yes, if your car is tricked-out the insurance company want to know - otherwise you have voided your insurance - in the UK anyway.

The insurance that I pay for doesn't only cover hardware issues, it covers EVERYTHING. I have TEP (total equipment protection) I don't know what kind of insurance you guys all have. There is deductibles for self induced problems. IE dropping your phone, running over it, water damage, throwing it at a wall, bricking it. If I were to break my phone, like drop it in the concrete and it were to smash, I would call asurian, my insurance provider, tell them I dropped my phone, and they would send me a new one. I know because ive done it before. They don't ask "we would be happy to help you but ONE question.. are you rooted?!"

I guess I can see where you come from. However A) that example is variable depending on your insurance provider, and B) the OP was not concerned about "bricking his phone" while rooting, simply losing warranty AFTER doing so. Bricking your phone with a custom ROM, assuming you have read a small amount on this forum or anything to do with installing roms at all, is EXTREMELY hard to do. Flashing ROMs not for your phone is really the only way. So all I'm saying is if his insurance is anything like mine then if anything happens that insurance would have covered before rooting say, they will cover it after. I had a blackberry 8330 with a hybrid rom. My dog chewed it up. Called insurance. They sent me a new phone. I sent the old one back.. and it still worked. Never heard a thing.

Well, sry to have abandoned this thread for a while. Well, I am paying insurance on it but the thing is it's from the actual cellular provider, so if I do something or something breaks then they will try to tinker with it, maybe see some things they don't know about or something and ask questions, which is why the 9v comes in handy

Well, if they're at least a bit competent, they will know how to check software version of your phone via settings.

This is true.. I have actually thought about seeing if there is a way to modify that information. *hehehe*
