Help Repeated erroneous "Message Not Sent" notification

For the last few days my Moto X keeps giving me the notification that a text message I sent was not sent - but when I touch to see the message in question it just takes me to the main messaging screen showing all the different threads.

When it first showed up I had just sent two different text messages to two different people - and both replied to the message.

I've received this notification before, but when I would press the alert it would show me the message that wasn't sent for one reason or another and it would go away once I acknowledged it.

If I dismiss it, it will come back in the next 30-60 seconds, or the next time I go into the messaging app, and if I turn off notifications it doesn't tell me when I receive a text.

This is the default messaging app.

Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any suggestions? I'd rather not delete every thread since I have a number of work related conversations and having them as a reference is a good thing.

I'd suggest backing your messages up, try SMS Backup+, works great!

Have you tried clearing the cache and/or data? (Back 'em up first though :) )

Since you are on Verizon I (really can't believe I'm going to say this!!) recommend their messaging app. It's really pretty decent. You can sync it with them or not (I don't).

Well, I screwed it up somehow. I backed up the messages, got confirmation they were backed up, deleted them all, and now when I restore nothing comes back.

I don't think you screwed up - I think that there's something whacky about the way messages are stored on Moto phones. I did that after a recent factory reset on the similar Droid Maxx - I usually don't restore messages, but I decided to try just to see what happened - and it said it restored 100 messages, but 99 were duplicates - so I had a single message restored.

Interestingly enough it said I backed up ~7300 items, but only restored ~5400 items. When I opened the app for the first time it showed all the messages that were there previously, for a split second, then they went away.

It's not the end of the world, there wasn't anything pressing in those messages, just nice to have written confirmation of orders I've placed with vendors, work I've assigned, etc.

Having 7300 stored messages may have been why you were having issues. I don't think that the database is meant to have that many. That's why SMSBackup+ is a great idea - you can have access to all of those messages in GMail while keeping the number of stored messages lower. (All sms clients should have a setting that has the client start deleting messages after a certain number from the same contact, etc.)

I am having this same issue. Only started recently. I have cleared all messages. This fixed the notification error for about a day, then it started back up again.

I have cleared cache/data and even used an app named History Eraser to clear the failed notification. Only to have it begin again after a short while.

I have my message limit set to 50 per contact / 500 total.

You need an older version of handcent now. Download the apk off of a free apk website

Here's the fix that worked for me with the new version. First set handcent as your default messenger app. next go to settings > send message settings > delivery report from there you can delete all undelivered messages.

After that I was able to reset the default back to the stock messenger app and delete handcent without the error message reoccuring

That worked for me too - after many months of having that notice around. Thanks!

I was leery of installing a third party app just for this but it seemed legit in the Play store so I went ahead and installed Handcent, followed these instructions, then deleted Handcent. Worked perfectly - message gone. Many thanks.
