Root Possible to Forego Kit kat?

Does anyone know if it's possible to permanently refuse the Kitkat update?

I thought I had to download the update and then I'd be prompted to install it, however it appears it's already downloaded and is awaiting install only.

I vehemently do not want to accidentally install this update, as I've gotten a replacement phone with JB intentionally. Kitkat doesn't work for some of my more important apps.

If I were to do an FDR, would this scrap the downloaded update?

An OTA is downloaded to your machine and when it is completely downloaded it asks permission to install. And it keeps asking.

One of the reasons people choose to root their phone is so they can rename the installation file and stop the asking over and over.

If that is something you would like to pursue I can move your question to the All Things Root sub-forum where it is discussed.

(The phone I have under contract is not root-ed.)

To add to what Thom said, a factory reset will not erase KitKat of you accept the update.

I'm curious though, KitKat has been out for many months, what app is incompatible?

I'm wondering if he's thinking of apps that don't run under ART. With this update, it defaults to Dalvik and you can convert it to ART if you wish.

I haven't found any apps that don't run under KitKat with Dalvik enabled. All my apps I had under JB are working just fine under KitKat.

The only other thing is possibly if he has apps that require root and if he has no way of unlocking the bootloader, then definitely, he'll want to stay away from KitKat since getting root on a locked bootloader is impossible and probably never will be possible.

There is a messaging application that allows selected entries to be hidden- My private messages, or something like that. The permissions change under Kitkat. One has to select a default messaging app and can only send and receive messages from that default application.

Therefore I'd like to remain on Jellybean for this reason alone. Additionally, I had no luck using WI-FI and Bluetooth simultaneously on kitkat.

I'd love to root my phone just to keep it on JB, I'm not interested in anything any more high speed, low drag. I just don't know where to start- which programs to run etc.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.
