Root Desire Root Guide For Newbies

Nice one, looks like the clearest and simplest guide so far... I see that I need two SD cards though, currently using the one that came with the phone as both my gold card and everyday card with tunes etc on...

You don't need to use 2, you can use the same one, but I recommend using a separate one as your gold card. They are very cheap, think someone mentioned before you can get a 1GB one for under a fiver in Tesco or something.

Ok thanks, I'll bin that one!

Can I use the 4Gb card that came with the phone? (I've copied all on it to a folder on my PC)

Is there a big down side to using the one card as a gold card and then using it in the phone?

I don't have a separate card reader/writer. Can I put the phone in disk drive mode and format from windows?

Sorry for all the dump questions!

lekky, yo, as per prev thread, looks complicated, had a bit of wine, ill read properly tomorrow,

one question, in theory, once it is all done is it fair to say i wont notice any chance on my phone other than the bonuses suggested??? im not'wiping' everything and so on...

sorry

It will wipe your phone, put it back to the state it was when you bought it, blank. But you can backup as explained in the guide.

But once rooted its the same experience as normal, but you get the option to download and use more apps.

Very nice guide lekky. I was following the modaco thread as I was doing mine and got confused by many of the posts from people who obviously knew their way around android/linux.

then as I got closer and closer easier methods kept appearing!

This looks so straight forward using all windows now :)

I formatted the gold card on my PC via its card reader. Later during the root process I had to format my main 8GB card for Apps2SD, which had to be done on the Desire through the special boot menu.

Ok thanks for that. I don't have a card reader/writer attached to my PC so I guess I'm stuffed for rooting?

you can create a goldcard in your phone (i did)

connect it via the htc sync option for the first part - issuing the adb command to get the long hex code

then after you have your goldcard.img from revskills, switch to disk drive mode for hex editing

[edit] oh dear, the revskills page no longer creates goldcard images for free...
Paul is looking into purchasing and providing the goldcard creation on Modaco
