Help Can I change SD cards?

First time smartphone user here so if this is a silly question, please excuse me...


My DI came and I got the 2gb microsd with it but haven't used it since I ordered a 16gb card ... but it won't be here for a few more days. In the meantime, I thought I'd use the 8gb card I had in my Dare with all my MP3s on it - not really thinking too much of it ... I just wanted to get my music on the phone and thought that was the quickest, easiest way. I don't really remember much about how my DI recognized the card but I guess smartphones format the card to work with them. Now my 8gb card will only show directories for /my sounds, /my media, etc. All of my MP3s seem protected (I can't even see the files) and I suppose that's where all of the data for some of the apps that I've already downloaded are as well.

My question is this: When the 16gb card gets here ... can I just insert the new card, re-copy my MP3s to a folder, and be okay - or will the apps that I've got installed fail to work properly (because some of their data is on the old card)? Would I have to reset the phone ( or uninstall all the apps ) to format the new card and re-download all the apps?

I hoe that all came out right ...

Anyone know the answer in laypersons terms. Heh.

I understand what you're asking... and I'm in the exact same predicament with my Dare / Inc cards. Patiently waiting from someone who can chime in?....

why don't you just copy everything from the old card onto a temp folder on your PC, and when the new card gets in just put it in, hook it up to the PC, overwrite everything with yr old data and reboot.

I may be wrong but I think the apps are stored internally, i.e. not on the SD card...

For now apps are stored on the SD card ... until an update. I could be wrong, but I think this was discussed somewhere else in this forum before - which is the reason that VZW included the 2gb microsd with purchase. Besides, I don't see any app files on the phone's internal storage when looking at it through explorer in Windows.

I suppose I could do that, but all of my music files ( although working ) are not in the intended place ( ie. the /my music folder ). If I want to add songs, which I will inevitably, they will be added in a different "place" on the card since I can't access their current "area" on the card after DI formatted it for its own use. Also, wouldn't that just seem to confuse the OS unnecessarily - music stored in two different places?

I'd like to get a solid ruling on this from someone in the know. Can I switch to a bigger sd card in the future without ruining my apps or will I need to re-install everything once I change the cards? If so, then I'm thinking it would just be easier to do a hard reset and set everything else up again ( I don't have a lot of bells and whistles like a lot of others so this wouldn't be too big of a deal, rather just a pain ).

Just copy all of the data on the old card to the new one. These phones read these card just like a computer and there is no specific format they have to be in. I think I understand your question. If I didn't answer it try asking it in simpler terms, many people don't want to read a history of what is on the card just what you want to do with the old and new ones. If you keep the questions to one or two sentences you will get more responses.

BTW, the apps are not on the card just the info an app might need to store for future reference. All of your apps are on the 512 on internal storage. Apps 2 SD (A2SD) is coming but not here yet for stock Android.
