I was using Pandora tonight and it kept switching off between 1x and 3G...Is 1x roaming? I have my phone set to not transfer data when I am roaming (Very Expensive - Past Experience). Do I not have to worry about anything now? Is 1x just a lesser quality connection; the music was still coming through perfect.

Thanks for the help. Love this forum!

I'm having the same problem. My incredible keeps switching between 3G and 1x, although my wife's droid does not. Beings both phones are in the same location it makes me think it might be a bug with the Incredible's software or hardware...? anyone else experiencing this issue?

I had that problem when i had a droid. But it could of been the custom rom.

But i havn't really noticed it yet with the inc

I've been using the HTC diamond for the last year and a half. For some reason you can be sitting in one spot, and one min have full 3g, or whatever the max was for Diamond, and the next have nothing. I have to move my phone around and maybe "put it to sleep" and then bring it back. After that my connection is fine. It must be a "cell" thing. I don't know why. Don't think that probably helps, just giving you my experience.

1X EVDO Rev A (3G)

CDMA2000 1X (IS-2000), also known as 1x and 1xRTT, is the core CDMA2000 wireless air interface standard. The designation "1x", meaning 1 times Radio Transmission Technology, indicates the same RF bandwidth as IS-95: a duplex pair of 1.25 MHz radio channels. 1xRTT almost doubles the capacity of IS-95 by adding 64 more traffic channels to the forward link, orthogonal to (in quadrature with) the original set of 64. The 1X standard supports packet data speeds of up to 153 kbps with real world data transmission averaging 60–100 kbps in most commercial applications.[5] IMT-2000 also made changes to the data link layer for the greater use of data services, including medium and link access control protocols and QoS. The IS-95 data link layer only provided "best effort delivery" for data and circuit switched channel for voice (i.e., a voice frame once every 20 ms).

EVDO Rev A (3G)

Revision A of EV-DO makes several additions to the protocol while keeping it completely backwards compatible with Revision 0.
These changes included the introduction of several new forward link data rates that increase the maximum burst rate from 2.45 Mbit/s to 3.1 Mbit/s. Also included were protocols that would decrease connection establishment time (called enhanced access channel MAC), the ability for more than one mobile to share the same timeslot (multi-user packets) and the introduction of QoS flags. All of these were put in place to allow for low latency, low bit rate communications such as VoIP.[7]
In the United States, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel have migrated 100% of their EV-DO Rev.0 networks to EV-DO Rev. A.

A couple things. You're on a nationwide plan which is also nationwide data. There is no roaming.

As others have said 1X is slower than 3G. Voice travels over the 1X network. Text messages also travel over the 1X network. You may notice your phone display switching to 1X when sending/receiving text messages or on voice calls. This is normal. It should go back to 3G as soon as you're finished and normal data is resumed.

Thanks for this post. I always wondered why my phone when to 1X when sending text messages.

1x is 2.5G...a stepping stone between 2G and 3G. 1G was analog, 2G was digilal (CDMA2000), 1xRTT was not enough of an improvement to be considered next gen so it was dubbed 2.5G, and EVDO with its always on data and faster speeds was enough of an improvement to be called 3G.

You should still be able to stream music on 1x but video might get choppy if not paused to buffer.
