Text to speech

Thanks for your useful post. I did search. I couldn't find what I want and hence this thread.

The part that appears to want me to install voice data is greyed out. I searched the market and couldn't find anything that resembled 'voice data'.

There are no further apps on the phone that relate to this. I would appreciate very much some help rather than a stupid post like this ^^

Speaking text and emails and contacts yes. But I want my text etc to be replayed to me by voice. And text to speech is this - isn't it? I just can't get it to work. I have SPEECH TO TEXT and it works a treat. I want to use TEXT-TO-SPEECH. Check under settings and 'Text-to-Speech. Its just above 'About Phone'.

thanks

I'm pretty sure google maps uses the text to speech in it's directions. If that install option is greyed out, it means it's already installed on your phone. I can't find any other apps that use it though. I too would love to have my mail and texts read out to me but I can't find a way of doing this yet.

By the way, why does everyone always seem to get 'text to speech' and 'speech to text' mixed up?? There completely different! :)

Google Translate uses text to speach :) But to be honest, with voice search installed, who needs text to speech :D

:D Talking about Google Translate, I think we're loosing something in internet typing translation here. :p I still don't know quite what you are getting at. As one turns your voice into text and one turns your text into a voice..............nothing to do with each other really.

Instead of using text to speach on translate, using voice it will translate and speak back so no need for text to speach on translate and maps:).

I sort of know what you mean. You are meaning that you don't have to type in, but Maps and translate uses the 'Text to Speech' files to speak out the directions and to speak out the translation. As in the program works the directions and translation are put out as text but then 'Text to Speech' converts that text to speech. So you do need 'Text to Speech' installed to get the voice output in those two apps.

Done all the above voice search showing in my programmes when i touch it display shows google search and speak now.I click on android keyboard and tick it but when I go into messages, the keyboard comes up without the speaker.

With the keyboard without the speaker on it displayed (ie. the old keyboard you're wanting to replace), long press on an input box where the text would be entered and a popup should come up, select input method and you should have the choice of keyboards, your old one and the new one.

Having said that though this thread is about text to speech not speech to text, they're the opposite of each other.

I'd like to know if there is anyway of of getting the phone to read out texts and emails, just for the novelty factor if nothing else.

The app " Drivesafe.ly" will read out emails, texts etc and works with bluetooth as well. Try out the free app in the market, its limited to 25 words but it DOES work and has a female voice thats nice and the paid version is available if you like it :)
