But how is the CALL QUALITY???

I am on VZ. I came from an iPhone 5s where I had too many people telling me I was breaking up. Switched to the G3 and call quality has been excellent!! Both earpiece and loud speaker, are very good. No one has complained, nor have I. Mine is cased in a Spigen Slim Armour case, FWIW. I am still getting use to the size of the G3, it's a Big phone. I had a G2 prior to the iPhone and sold the G2 when the email exchange issue was a big problem. I use my phone for work so call quality and sending/receiving emails are very important to me. So far, i am digging the G3. I would definitely recommend the G3.

I have a one week old G3 on Verizon and several times now people have told me I am breaking up and sound like I'm on a VOIP connection. At least one person was on a land line so I know it was me.

So today, I'm driving in the car on a call and the person on the other end was breaking up terribly. I had 4 bars 4G and she was on a 4G connection as well. This was with BlueTooth, so I disconnected the BT and switched to speaker phone with the same problem. Went about 2 miles with no change in break up. She said I sounded fine. I could barely pick up one word out of 5 as she was breaking up badly and sounded garbled.

I hung up and redialed.
My next call to her was fine.

I would normally attribute this to cell tower problems but it's happening too often during the 7 days I have had the phone.
I'm coming from a Razr Maxx (the original) and never had this problem before.

I'm thinking my phone is defective?

When it works, it works fine and people tell me I sound great.
When it doesn't work, it's awful.

I plan on bringing it back to Best Buy in the morning for a replacement.
Anyone else having problems like this?

I'm on Verizon and call quality has been really good for me. I've have roughly 50 calls on it since the 18th and I haven't had a problem. No echos, no static, etc. The other people have been clear to me and I haven't heard any complaints from the people on the other end (not that I asked how I sounded LOL).

So hardware problem sounds likely to me...

I'm sure hoping it's a hardware problem because I love this phone and the Galaxy S5 is really my only other choice and I'm not a big Samsung fan.

I hear ya...I hope it is too. A number of people aren't thrilled about the call quality so that makes me think it could be a bigger problem but since I haven't seen it personally...it seems more realistic that it's early production models or just a bad batch of them. it happens with virtually every single phone that comes out and most phones aren't known for having really bad call quality...

I seem to be reading that. My problem is actual cutting out. It's like you hear, or the person on the other end hears every other word all broken up. It's completely not listenable. Kind of like a land line with a handset cord making and breaking connection intermittently. I'm suspecting it's a defective phone.

U guys are funny ! FWIW I was just out for a while driving and had to take a business call and it was breaking up badly on my end. It started out fine but then went bonkers after about 4 minutes or so. Phone is going back for an exchange in the morning. Let's see how well Best Buy's 14 day exchange program works. I'm on my 7th day.

This is not a confidence builder.

When I bought the G3, the sales girl was so eager to install it in the case for me I allowed her to do it. Little did I know she left a lot of the slivers of protective film all around the four edges of the phone, and I believe one of them covered the microphone. Luckily I figured it out as soon as I got it home.

Everyone with muffled-sounding calls should double-check and make sure they peeled off everything.

I've wondered at times if they'll ever start releasing "smartphones" that don't actually have a phone function.

Heh. That's actually how I plan to use my G3. It's on a line that I don't use so nobody has that number.

The G3 is the sweet spot between carrying around a tablet and using my 4" screen (iPhone) for everything.

When I use my phone I always use speaker unless it's a private convo in public. That's why I prefer the iPhone for phone conversations. None of this juggling the phone around for better sound quality.

Best of both worlds.

Exchanged the phone at BB today. They didn't bat an eyelash. I notice new phone has a manufacture date of 7/20/14 where old phone was made in May 2014 if I remember correctly. So far so good. Good point about the stick on plastic duc916. It's easy to miss and I'll bet at least some people may not realize it. I'll report back on how this replacement phone does. I'm hoping the last one was just a defect because I love this phone!

As promised, the new phone is working well. No more cutting out on calls from either end. Apparently the first phone I has was defective. I do get some complaints from the other end that I am "low volume" "fading out" but I think it's related to my positioning of the phone when talking or just the cell technology.

One thing I do notice is a highly intermittant "pop or click" during phone calls. Sounds like a speaker overloading yet it happens with ear piece, speaker phone and ear buds.
Not a biggie, and the other end of the call does not hear anything like this so I am not overly concerned.
I have seen others on the net complaining of this though.
Software update?
Probably.
Minor though.

I returned my first one because I scratched the screen, er I mean it was freezing up. My first one did that crack and pop thing, my second one NEVER does. Not that it was a huge deal, but nice that it doesn't.

On the thread topic, I was traveling for business and my wife called me as I was having dinner in the hotel pub. It was slammed busy and as loud as you can imagine, to the point I was almost yelling into the phone. After talking for a few minutes, she asked what I was doing, and I told her I was in the pub. She acted surprised, so I asked her if she could hear all the background noise, and she said it was perfectly quiet. I'm not sure I wanted to let her in on that little nugget of information, could have come in handy, but pretty impressed at the noise cancelation.

Another update: I drove about 250 miles yesterday, from NY to NJ and back and was constantly making calls on the G3 which is hooked to a BT Jabra Freeway in my car. At least one call was a 45 minute conference call. I did not have a single problem, not a single dropped call and the phone just worked so the cutting out was definitely the defective phone I exchanged. I didn't get any random pops either but that's really, really intermittent. People on the other end said I sounded fine. Looks like a wrap on this one. I love the phone!

It wasn't as dim as I thought and the s5 looked cartoony compared to the g3 (saturated). The viewing angles were terrible compared to the s5. That's an amoled v. lcd issue, I know, but the colors were more real on the g3. (subscribed.)

You do know that the S5 has the option to make the colors less saturated and more natural, right?

I posted this to reddit but thought I would share here too:

Hey guys,
I am posting here because of how frustrated I am right now with my G3. I recently purchased it at the end of August 2014. Everything else works fine and I love it in every other way. It's intuitive, simple, fast, etc..
The problem: People have been complaining that:

  • My voice sounds muffled at times
  • There is a mild echoing/cutting of my words when the phone is in normal speaking position
  • There is noticeable static in the background
  • My voice will cut in and out (when all I do is shift from ear to ear or move the phone slightly away from my face).

Naturally, I did some tests of my own and noticed the same things. Most notably, when calling the voice quality is not clear but slightly "off." Kind of like very mildly robotic, and unclear - enough that you can tell there is something weird about the call. The sound volume will go in and out at times and I find it difficult to make out what the person is saying without paying real close attention (this is all from me listening to another user speak with my G3 while I was on a landline).

To top it all off, when I try my old samsung s3 in the same locations and with the same testing, the results are clear with no issues. Why would a much older phone have superior call quality??

I suspect there is something wrong with my microphone.
I've tried fiddling with the call enhancement feature and turning wifi on and off to no avail.

But it gets worse. The phone is not even one month old but Bell Mobility insists they can't do anything for me here; they have to send the phone back to LG which will take 2-3 weeks. LG will run tests and either fix it or send it back.
I was hesitant about doing this as I did not want to be without a phone for 3 weeks only to be told that they can not identify a problem. So I called LG to inquire about what type of "tests" they would run to replicate the issue. The customer service agent was extremely rude on the phone and told me that "I need to go to my service provider about this issue" and "they don't share their testing methods to the general public." So NO help, information, or reassurance that this would be resolved.

I am so frustrated because I do not want to send the phone back 3 weeks only to be told that they could not replicate the issue or some other excuse (which I fear). And I fear this because there has been no reassurance at all from Bell or LG.

I am quite disappointed with Bell Aliant, LG, and this device. I would appreciate any advice you guys may have on this issue.

You are not alone with this problem. I have pretty much the same problem. Also had the "cutting out" problem which was definitely fixed by exchanging the phone within my 10 period (BestBuy- Verizon).

However, I am still battling the "you sound far away, in a tin can, fading in and out, under water etc" problems with this phone. It is intermittent, but happens several times a day and it seems like moving the phone around fixes it even though I am very conscious of speaking directly into the mic and not covering it with my fingers etc.

I have never had this problem with my previous phone, a 2.5 year old Razr Maxx.

I'm not sure where to turn because I bought the phone from BestBuy-Verizon and have read horror stories of 5 week waiting periods which for me is unacceptable plus the fact that I might get someone else's refurb problem.

There is another thread on this topic that you might want to check out.

I'm looking for guidance on how to best handle a replacement phone?
