Reasons why u chose the g3 over other flagship phones.

I had a Samsung S3 and Nexus 5 before getting the LG G3. While I loved my old S3 when it came out I was on a Sprint 2 yr contract. After a year both the contract and phone got long in the tooth for me. Sprint LTE service never did match up to the advertised "enhancements" they kept promising. I had far better "4g-ish" access on their old Wimax system. My Nexus phones (had the Galaxy Nexus before the Nexus 5) were for a prepaid T-Mobile plan.

In 2013 Samsung/Sprint pushed a Jellybean update to my S3 that killed the battery life. I got about 6-8 hours use out of it instead of 10-12. Then the microSD card slot got buggy and started unmounting cards randomly. (I had to juryrig a hardware fix.) The Nexus 5 won me over Autumn 2013 and I went with the pure Android experience using the better T-Mobile LTE service. Their service actually improved over the last 18 months while Sprint's got worse.

What has won me over to the G3 is I get the best of what Samsung offered while still getting as close to a Nexus experience as possible.

  • User replaceable battery (for when I'm traveling and using my phone as a camera)
  • 32GB internal memory (I have that on my Nexus 5, the S4 and S5 were 16GB only on Sprint)
  • MicroSD card slot (for storing my Play Music/Movies files and for camera/video capture)
  • Much better sound on my video capture (Nexus 5 cannot handle loud bass sounds)
  • LG's skin is closest to pure Android as you can get (I got really sick of Touchwiz and their junk)

Since having the phone there are a few added features I've grown to love.

  • Knock patterns are awesome and natural for me.
  • The back buttons are so much easier to press.
  • Camera app has the voice control and optional minimal menu display.
  • I've been lusting after the Note's 5"+ displays. 5.5" is sweet for me.
  • MultiWindow is another Samsung lust fulfilled.

I do wish I had Google Now access with a swipe of the Home Screen. LG's monitor screen is worthless to me. I shut that off.

I have no interest in Motorola phones or HTC. Motorola is substandard hardware and HTC over-skins it way too much. I despise Windows 8 so have no interest in a Lumia. Amazon is great for shopping, but I'm not so invested I need a phone, tablet or set top box from them. My Prime account is mainly for the free shipping.

I'm hoping my love for the G3 lasts a year. Then I'll jump to something new. I've already dumped Sprint in favor of T-Mobile. You cannot pay me to give my hard earned cash to Verizon or AT&T. I've had enough horrible history with Verizon to know it is a company from Hades.

Kudos I enjoyed your post.

Reading your comparisons and preferences was the best part, especially since I always get good ideas from most of the great members in this forum.

Not married to any brand, model of phone or carrier, it's variety I enjoy. Once my collection was from several platforms, but ever since the advent of Android I've increasingly migrated to a near Android only selection of Smartphones.

More and more I find myself using and enjoying Google Now, it'd be nice if more phones implemented it with one swipe to the left home screen like my Nexus 5 does. The rumor I read about a possible 5.9" display on Nexus 6 is the most exciting rumor yet. My Note 3's 5.7" has me spoiled and I want a bit more.

Oh well there's no perfect smartphone, nor would I want one, it'd take all the fun out of juggling phones, a skill I've spent years learning... :)

Even though I haven't chosen the G3 over my Note 3 that I already had, I will definitely participate on why I think it's currently the best offering available:

- Size - 5.5 inch screen on physically smaller dimensions (this would include having the best screen to bezel ratio on the market)

To me, this was my only "complaint" about first getting the Note 2 (2 years ago) and the Note 3 last year. While I've gotten used to the overall size (which really isn't that bad, once getting used to it), if they had made the Note 3 similar to the G3 (much smaller physical dimensions w/ 5.5 inch screen and s-pen integration), I'd have been much happier with the Note 3

- 32gb Internal storage w/ microSD slot

Regardless of Kitkat's limitations (similar to when ICS was released), when it comes to microSD card saving/moving of files, I still much prefer having an additional storage option. Apps are getting larger and larger in size, especially gaming and video apps, that once needed cache builds up on specific apps used, even the 32gb internal is stretching the limits for me. Being able to have videos I've created and/or downloaded, as well as a large music library and other work related files (that can be quite large)...microSD slot is a "must have" and 32gb internal has become a "must have" since I purchased my Note 3.

- 3000mah battery

This has become the minimum I'd accept for any phone. After having the Note 2 (which I believe was 3100mah), and now the Note 3 (3300mah), I quickly realized how much I wanted a minimum of 3000mah for any future phone. What Motorola did with the Razr Maxx, I wish other manufacturers would've followed their lead. The G2 accomplished it last year and would've been a contender for me, if I hadn't already gotten addicted to S-pen usage and integration.

Overall, I think LG is moving in the right direction. My mother loved the phone that much, that I just moved it over to her line. Ideally, I'm waiting to see what LG and Samsung come up with, when it comes to folding phones. I'm hoping that Samsung keeps their word of having it in the market next year. That's really what I'm looking forward to, especially if it's the Note 5 (or even an "new" line w/ s-pen integration). But, if I were never had experienced the S-pen on a daily basis, I think the G3 would be my phone upgrade of choice right now. Luckily, it's still in the family, so I get to use it every now and then.

BTW, not so sure the G3 is future proof, since the 801 is operating at its ceiling with Qhd, so that content will likely choke performance and battery life. I would agree if the 805, since per Qualcomm, that chip was designed from concept stage on up as having a Qhd centric GPU.

I prefer the term, "Near-future proof" ;)

I hate how people say oh well the phone wont run good because it uses 801 and has a qhd display tbh the device runs fine as it should the qhd display isnt a big hit on the processor. it runs just fine battery life is fine.
Lg wouldn't ship the phone with a 801 if they think it couldn't get the job done and they knew a 805 would be coming plus it be idiotic for them to release another g3 with an improved processor across the nation.
Also on a side note every phone gets outdated in a year so enjoy what u have.

I do agree with you.

There is nothing future-proof.

Future is not what it used to be.

I also hate when ppl go to the LG forums to promote Samsung phones.:smokingsomb:

I wouldn't be promoting Samsung if LG would finally make an all around good flagship. The battery life on the G3 is trouble and so is the knock on crap.

That made me chuckle. Knock on and knock codes have to be better than the fingerprint scanner. I think Samsung put the heart rate monitor on the back of the S5 to measure the rise in the frustration due to that useless feature not working LOL!

I'm not one for manufacturer vs manufacturer wars but no one crams more completely useless features in a phone than Samsung. Well...maybe Amazon LOL :)

Wife has the SG5, I have the G3.

Battery? I was initially concerned too BUT so far I've found the G3 and SG5 (and my old N2) to be about equivalent (Thx UB!). As for the knock codes being crap? I guess I like crap...a lot! The fingerprint reader on the SG5 OTH was retired after ~5min trial. That, I view as crap. Both phones (Sprint) came with tons of crapware BUT most could be uninstalled on the G3, none on the SG5 without root. I like my wife's SG5, it's a solid performer but if I or she had to choose right now? It would be the G3. It feels more modern, more so than it's ~2 month newer release would indicate. I'd add that I'd take the M8 over the SG5 too if it only had a removable battery.

This would be a realistic quote if you only consider the fact that The S5 and the M8 are the only phones on the market with a dumb down basic use feature that makes the battery last for days. Otherwise the battery on the G3 is actually pretty damn good considering what it needs to power. It easily lasts all day unless you are playing graphic intensive games nonstop and browsing Netflix.

Have you used the G3 for more than an in store demo?! My battery on my G3 lasts soooo much longer than my S3. I can easily go all day without charging my phone. Matter of fact, I got the phone on launch day and have never gotten below ~40%... never. I like the knock, personally. It's not necessary but I find it easier to just tap the screen then find the power button.

Back to the OP, I looked at the G3, M8, and S5. I've owned an HTC, and a Samsung, and didn't plan on any other manufacturer, but LG just won.

The M8 metal didn't matter to me as I put all my phones in cases. I liked the front facing speakers, but figured that was only really relevant when streaming video's. netflix, etc, and since I was losing unlimited data, I didn't need the temptation. I did like that fact that had scaled down the skin and it looked pretty nice.

The S5 was nice, good size, familiar, and I did like that it was waterproof. But, I felt Samsung was going too far with TouchWiz and I didn't like that. Also, it honestly didn't feel like that much of an upgrade from the S3. Yea, better processor, but nothing else.

G3, like the screen, felt like it would stay "the best" phone longer than the other two, and it really felt like an upgrade, nice design, and it seems like the UI is minimalist (much like the M8), For me, the overall 5.7'' is a little bigger than I prefer (don't get me wrong, I like it, just doesn't fit in pockets as well as the others). Was concerned about the battery, based on reviews, but, like I said, so far it far exceeded my expectations.

So far, happy with my decision. I know this phone won't stay on top for like, but nothing ever will. Chasing the perfect phone will never be accomplished and always having THE BEST is too expensive and just plain annoying.

Check out any of the side by side comparisons. No phone on the market beats the Lumia 1020 and the Xperia line camera is the next best. I've owned the z1s note 3 and G3 this year. Xperia easily won in camera department. The G3 takes better photos than the note but the videos on the note blow it away. I've tested them side by side

and did you do side-by-side comparisons?

You don't even own G3, lol. You are here to promote Gnusmas, nothing more.

To the ppl interested, try Jishnu's mod. http://androidforums.com/lg-g3/859687-lg-g3-camera-mod-rooted-phones.html

Makes a lot of difference for both photo and video.

I read folks on other forums who have had every iPhone? On launch day, all 8 of them.. B O R I N G!.. I had the ONE M7, as lovely as the M8 is, I wanted something New..

Indeed, they have reviewed the G3 cat 6 with the Snapdragon 805 and the benchmarks are barely above the 801 G3.
http://www.androidorigin.com/lg-g3-...e-cat-6-805-performance-benchmark-comparison/

Just logically speaking, if the benchmarks are barely above the normal G3 and are in fact still below the GS5, then I'm loathe to believe we'd see much improvement at all if any. It's almost as if they made very minimal changes to the Adreno 420 vs. the 330. Maybe just a higher clock speed or something? Definitely makes me feel better for jumping on the G3 bandwagon early.

LG G3 Snapdragon 801 vs G3 LTE Cat. 6 Snapdragon 805: Performance Benchmark Comparison

Need actual Qhd content to compare them :)

Either case, the key resource issue is the Qhd, so is what it is. Battery life from chip to chip is about 10% in favor of the 805, but that does not account for actual weight in a device. 10% probably means 3% battery life improvement. Added: The official battery improvement per Qualcomm is 20% for the 805, but that is under lab conditions.

Unless a heavy user, you probably would notice zero difference, since the 801 is not the biggest resource and is fine with content, since almost all is 1080p or less (average is 720p).

Then how on earth would you claim that the g3 has the best camera on the market? Maybe it has the best camera on the market that you've personally tried?

Freaking A.

I don't own a bunch of phones.

Yes, it is the best I've tried.

I am sure you tested them all, lol.

At this point my ignore list will have some nice addition :D

Friends don't let friends believe anything from an AnTuTu benchmark.

That thing went to seed years ago.

Srsly - stick a phone in a creme pie, throw it against the wall, count the dots splattered on the wall, publish as your benchmark, and claim you have a better benchmark than AnTuTu - because - you will.

With AnTuTu, you don't have any creme pie leftover.

And your numbers will be as meaningless as AnTuTu except - creme pie.

Coconut and banana creme benchmarking available for carrier variants.
