OK, so I'm strange. But I have two phones which have voice GPS. So I put in the address of my destination and off we go.Its telling you what to do but say you decide to go to a restaurant well the GPS says turn around your going the wrong way. (OK you can turn it off but if you don't?) I swear the second time it tells you to turn around it actually sounds like its getting pissed off by the time it tells you the third or forth time it sounds like its going to BLOW UP the phone.....lol. I know it is not real but it sure does seem that way when your not quite sure of where you are?

If you're going to go to where you told the GPS to get you, but you decided to take a different route (there's not a single GPS I know of that will tell me the shortest OR quickest way from my house to downtown - they're all wrong), ignore it until you''re back in sync wih the GPS.

If you changed your mind about your destination, either cancel the trip in the GPS, turn the GPS off or turn the phone off.

(I've used 4 different GPS apps in Android, and a few discrete GPS devices, and never noticed a change in tone when I've gotten the 5th or 6th "when possible, make a legal U-turn" notification.)

LOL......That's great, it was exactly what I was trying to get across. It always happens to me when I am on a call,the GPS is talking,and the car needs a command for the radio or heat. I'm just getting way to old for all this technology

I turn the volume off on mine as I normally know where to turn. I just use my GPS primarily to find the fastest route. There are usually only a few routes and I know the turns anyway. I only turn on the volume if I am going to a new place and don't know where it is.

I sometimes get the same feeling with my Magellan navigator. If I fail to follow an instruction--usually on purpose because I don't want to make left turns onto busy boulevards when there's only a two-way stop sign to regulate traffic, Magellan Lady seems to sigh or even cluck her tongue as she says, "Recalculating route..."

I pretty much never use my Android device for driving instructions because my signal is usually too spotty for that, unfortunately, and 3G/4G data too slow. I need to know which way to turn a decent amount of distance before I reach the intersection, not when I'm right on top of it.

Is there a way to tell a GPS to not take you through unsafe parts of cities? Like, Englewood in Chicago. I'd never drive through that part. Lot's of gangs, shootings and bad things.

Mine is always very polite and she says things like "You have off coursed.", "Route is recalculating.", "Please make an U-turn." ...and the rather Yoda like, "In 400 metres a speed camera is located." and "At your destination you have arrived."

And here we are driving around the third ring road....

...which is pretty good considering the phone and I were in London at the time having just got off the plane. ...although a few minutes later she did eventually realise this and threw an error.

I always watch the scenery, and know the direction i'm travelling. With just the old fashioned roadmap beside me, i drove at least 20.000 miles in the USA, without any big mistake or getting lost.

What would happen when the GPS is no longer available? Chaos and dispair ?
People seem to lost that ability to go where their gut tells them to go.

Last time I tried an old paper map I got 200 miles off course and 9 hours additional driving. Never again.

I'm glad I learnt how to use a map before sat nav became the done thing. I still tend to just use sat nav, but at least I know how to read a map if I need to..... also able to read os maps for hill walking, can literally be a life saver

....and then there's Glonass(Russia) and Galileo(Europe), as well as my map reading and orienteering merit badges I got in the Scouts.

BTW I think many GPS devices made in the last couple of years are also Russian Glonass capable. So not just dependent on the US military.

Without GPS there are always options. anyone recall IRS? (no, not that IRS) aka Inertial Reference System? Boeing 747s had been using them at least as far back as the '70s.

Then there's always CB radio...LORAN, Network Triangulation, etc. even an ADF radio will work inside a car if you know how to use one.

I remember in elementary school, we had to learn map skills. We look at various maps showing a few blocks to maps showing the entire world and answer questions.

I do use my GPS when driving, but mainly for the best routes through traffic. Most of my commutes are to places I am familiar with. I can get there without GPS, but I like saving time and being able to bypass any areas with heavy traffic.

I wanted to keep a paper map in the car, but my wife doesn't. The glove box is pretty full with the owner's manual (man it's thick) and other stuff like gloves. Also, my paper map would have been over 10 years out of date. Waze and Google Maps are updated the next day or at least within a week when there are any changes to roads.

I like and enjoy modern GPS to navigate. However, it does take some fun out of traveling. In a drawer full of vacation pictures here at the house is a Rand McNally road atlas. We used that atlas every time we traveled. We inked in every road we traveled and circled places where we stopped. We had aspirations of some ink on every page by now.. that didn't happen. But hey, it's as fun as looking at the vacation pictures... it tells a story.

Staying true to the intended topic... I, too, think the ol gal doing the navigating with my phone's gps has an attitude. I can almost see her hand on her hips and her neck out when she says "recalculating" But hey, I'm old school. I'm very accustomed to that from my wife.
