Is the voicemail one that comes on it default the verizon one? I thought it was the sense one and free

Free Verizon Voicemail is what every Verizon number has. The messages are stored on Verizon's servers, not downloaded to the phone. When you dial your number, or dial *86, you are billed for airtime as you connect to Verizon. You then can listen to your messages.

Verizon's Visual Voicemail actually pushes the recorded messages to your phone, where you can view the caller info, as well as listening to each message, in any order that you desire. AT&T includes VVM on all iPhone plans, but the greedy folks at Verizon feel as if they are justified in charging $2.95/month.

Youmail is free, and works much like Verizon's VVM. When you set Youmail up, you initially dial a number that re-routes unanswered calls to Youmail's servers. Audio messages are then pushed to your phone via your unlimited data connection. Youmail gives you an alert, you may then open the app, (I put the icon on my home screen), and view and listen to your messages.

Youmail also allows you to upload your contact list, so if you use their pre recorded messages, the system actually names your caller by name, which really freaks some people out. My wife thought that I had a girlfriend, the first time she left me a message :)

For a small monthly fee, Youmail will also transcribe your messages, and sends them to you in text or email.

If you end up not liking it, you can always uninstall it.

Im not using the visual voice mail from verizon.. im trying to setup the voicemail part of sense ui via Messages and swipe to the right
I have a Verizon V-Voice mail account and the app you are talking about worked for me. It doesn't look like the normal Verizon apps i'm used too but I've never owned an Android device before and have never seen an HTC version of VVM. I'm not sure if this is a free app or the Verizon paid app. Normally as soon as you try and use the Verizon app for the first time it makes you agree to a contract for the VVM account before logging in with the password to your voice mail.

Google Voice is also visual voicemail and is also free. Although it is an invite only service and obtaining an invite can be difficult.

I think i'm about to pay for an invite on eBay since i've been waiting for 2 weeks for one from Google and attempts at requesting on on these boards have been fruitless.. and $5 to not have to wait anymore...worth it.

Is the visual voicemail app installed on the phone a free service or is it a verizon service that charges 2.99/month? If I accidentally open it will I be automatically charged or will it ask to confirm first? I am not going to pay extra for this feature.

The Visual Voicemail app is a Verizon service that you will have to pay for. If you download it'll prompt you before the service becomes active.

You're better off downloading phone fusion's visual voicemail or Youmail from the Market.

I'm currently using Phone Fusion right now and it's not too bad.

I'm in the process of experimenting wth Google Voice to see if it can do the same type of service. I know it'll save and transcribe and save calls made to it using my Google Number, but I want it to save and make available the voicemails left on my regular mobile number. Anyone know if this is possible?

"...once you set google voice as your voicemail service, all voicemails, whether it is going to your verizon# or google voice# will be recorded and transcribed by google voice."

I'm using the installed visual voicemail, which integrates very well into all of the other onboard contact navigation. Certainly worth the few dollars per month.

However....there does appear to be an issue with playback volume/quality. Even when cranked up all the way (Media Volume, which is what turns up during playback), the volume is extremely quiet. My guess it that it's an issue with the encoding/recording process or software, so I'm hoping for an update to fix the issue.

In my (brief) experience with the phone, it looks like the integrated VVM capabilities are preferable over the VVM app that can be downloaded from the App Store. In particular, the integrated VVM "client" ties VVM functionality in with other Android notifications. It's pretty slick, in my opinion.

jimmypop-I couldn't agree more! Have you noticed the low volume level on yours as well though? Not worth using another app though.
