Root What has been solved with GALAXO 1.6.3.?

Hi, I'm am considering to buy the i7500. Here in Croatia it's pretty affordable with a 2 year contract.
Now I realize, from reading this forum, that this phone has a lot of problems. Unfortunately, I don't understand all the technical talk.
So to keep it simple I would just like to know which of the negative aspects mentioned in gsmarena have been solved with Galaxo 1.6.3. as oposed to the 1.5 you get when you buy the phone? I understand, obviously, that FM radio and other hardware missing cannot be solved.

  • No smart dialing
  • Camera features are a bit outdated
  • No videocalling
  • No multi-touch gestures
  • No Flash support in the web browser
  • No DivX/XviD video support or a third-party application to play that
  • No FM radio
  • No TV-out port
  • No voice dialing
  • Somewhat limited 3rd party software availability
  • No Bluetooth file transfers (not without rooting)
  • No tethering (not without a custom ROM)

My question is probably annoying and noob-like, but thanks in advance to anyone willing to answer me.

GSMarena is a good site to see phone specs but that's all. Their reviews suck and their negative aspects are a laugh. Like Rastaman said, those things affects most Androids and shouldn't be taken into account at all.
The other thing is this phone. Stay away from Galaxy. There are other phones to buy in Croatia, even Magic is a better option. I know that Galaxy is very cheap here but it's not worth it if you ask me.

Can you explain why ?

HTC promises all the time an update to 2.1 for HERO. But it still has only 1.5 from HTC. It's postponed till June now. Hero users are very angry.

I agree that communication with customers can be better. But I don't know what is worse Galaxy or HTC way.

Currently I'm very happy with this one and its performance. It's very good value for money I paid.

Only 192MB of RAM, weak wifi and GPS signal, propitery drivers and RILD which prevent modders to create custom ROMs (Hero has around 10-20 fully working 2.1 custom ROMs, I wouldn't wait for 2.1 if I had Hero with so much options, and Magic has Cyanogen ports), interface is extremely lagging (compared to roommate's Hero and a good friend of mine's Magic), currently released 1.6 has bugs I can't get over (no sleep and random lagging which prevents normal usage). The first thing I mentioned is the thing I dislike the most. 288MB on Magic and Hero make a great difference. And the interface on them is much snappier than my Galaxy. If I knew all this before I bought my Galaxy I would spend a little more money or wait. That's why I tell everyone who's considering to buy Galaxy (especially now when there are so much more options) to look for something else.

Thanks for your response. But what exactly has been fixed then with 1.6.3.?
And what other comparable phone could I get here for the same price? I don't think there is one.

I'm a Galaxy user myself, and while I like the phone I'm slapping myself because I haven't waited a little longer.

I played with an HTC Desire today in the shop, and for only a little more than I spent on the Galaxy when I bought it, you get soooo much more... (not only hardware-wise but also in the software department... HTC Sense rules, and vanilla 2.1 is also a lot better than 1.5/1.6)

I also thought the Desire was a lot bigger than this one, but that isn't true; it's only slightly taller.

Which network would you sign a contract with? If it's Tele2 there aren't many options. On VIP there are a lot of options, I think they still have Magic.
Galaxo doesn't solve the issues that you've mentioned. It only makes the phone snappier, has custom kernel with a few tweaks, has some advanced options, new home screen app (supports up to 9 home screens).

P.S. "Limited 3rd party apps availability" What a joke!

Unfortunately it's Tele2.

most of the things listed there though affects most androids

i was talking about the phone in general. there are so many good options out there that it is just a shame to buy the galaxy no matter what the price is. like people said, the phone still suffers a pretty laggy experience which is super annoying in my opinion...1.6.3 improves it greatly but it is not there yet.

Yup, same problem here. Signed a contract until 11/2011 (infact, couldn't wait because we needed an Android phone for a project back then, I would have waited a bit longer and buy a Hero or some newer Android phones)
Currently planning to sell my Galaxy and get myself a Desire before the end of May.

Just curious, for how much are you selling it?
