Can we behave if the Official thread unlocks?

Status
Not open for further replies.
My name is Ron and I'm an Evoholic.

For all those participating in the primary thread that was recently locked, I just wanted to formally ask you all to chime in with a written agreement that we can in fact post politely and also respect everyone's right to their own opinions, without persecution.

I personally promise to treat everyone with respect and not put down other's opinions.

I want my friends back! :)

I was out all day and didn't check the forums much after my last post this morning. After reading through all of it, I'm glad the Mods locked it down.

It's unfortunate that there has to be negative attitudes projected towards something that's so petty. Talk forums were made for people to share information and a portal (if you will) for people to gain knowledge without having to read through 10 million books.

I joined Android forums because it seemed like a community where I would really have an opportunity to learn more about the OS and start to enjoy people who had the same interest in Android. Now, considering how much negativity has been spewed in such a short amount of time on one thread, I'm wondering if the forums can manage to keep out that negativity.

I'm a moderator for another forum (not tech related) and quite honestly, there are A LOT of people that would've been banned from all the negative talk (or given sturn warnings). It only takes 1 or 2 people to kill the experience for MANY, so hopefully those few bad seeds can be weeded out before the EVO is released, so that the majority can actually enjoy these forums again.

I think the biggest thing is that if i say something is true and someone else comes back and says they disagree with me then I shouldn't freak out about it and should probably take it like an adult and move on. I think it would be truly hilarious if people in real life fought like people on the internet.

I think this video says it well.

Yeah I agree. I have no problem being and staying civil. And I agree the thread needed to be shut down....but I don't agree with how long. Too many innocent people are affected by the shut down. AND....this major forum that really has been the best source of info for the EVO 4G on the net is currently dead...on a live site! With the good comes the bad....and I think the mods should do their job and warn and or ban the individuals creating the problem. Instead...their solution is to shut it down completely? It's their right to do so....but I'm no spring chicken....and I can't recall this happening at other sites. It's usually the individuals that are admonished. I say all of this from frustration...because I too enjoy the sense of community and otherwise civil nature of most of the people contributing. I hope they bring it back sooner rather than later!

I missed yesterday's train wreck, which is probably a good thing, because my snarky side would have probably stepped in and gotten me in trouble.

What disappoints me the most is overwhelming amount of immaturity displayed, and how everyone had to be right about their own stance. I can appreciate those who have more skeptical viewpoints, but on the other hand, it's not necessary to rain on everyone's parade either.

What strikes me as absurdly hysterical, is how certain people NEEDED their perspective to be validated by everyone else. Their fragile egos were obsessed with something that won't matter in another month or two when the Evo finally drops. It's rather pathetic how it all went down, on both sides of the argument... seriously, it is.

I actually think it's a good idea to keep it locked down until the announcement.

All of the talk has been about when the release date is going to be and getting fired up when their reasons are disagreed with. Just start a god damned release date prediction thread if it's that important.

I think a contributing issue is that we have so many posters who are fixated on this phone and think the techy world is revolving around it... eg, the WWDC announcement means that there's no way that it'll release anywhere near it, that it's going to blow the Incredible completely away, that it'll be the bestest phone you can get for five days until it's topped again, etc.

Anyhow.

There's just not that much information to talk about. I'm glad it's locked for now, it should stay that way at least until the release date is announced so that we don't have to read about armchair executives' predictions and subsequent arguments. JUST START A THREAD.

I'm talking with TS right now trying to get the thread reopened. I agree with Norril that everyone needs to be respectful with each other. Since TS is leaving for Paris on Wednesday, I hope we can keep it civil while he's gone. If not, the admins or a different mod will step in and it won't be pretty.

I accept some of the blame for the thread being closed, mostly because the release date was what most of the fighting was over. At least that's what stated it. What followed was a whole lot of bickering and name calling and it got out of control. That's when I asked to have the thread locked down.

The EVO thread has pretty much taken over my life, but I don't think I'm the only one in that boat. I haven't slept well, haven't eaten properly and I haven't been able to give my business the attention it needs. I'm addicted and I know a lot of you are too, so I would like to see the thread reopened.

I promise to behave and I promise not to push the May 22nd date since that angered some of our forum members. Personally, I still think that date is the sweet spot and I'm sticking with it, but I'm not going to push it anymore.

Clock, I would agree with you...but I don't understand why a person with your opinion couldn't just shut the thread down for themselves? Everyone...you...me....we can decide if we are getting something from the thread. With this said, fighting, backbiting, caddy remarks...etc...are bad image and make for a bad thread. Bill kept things pretty civil...and until ego's got involved...it was held up as a good example of a harmonious thread. I really think there is no harm in speculation....heck...what's the difference between no posts....and speculation? Nothing...except more posts! LOL People get to pass the time...communicate....and maybe...just maybe...learn of a new angle. The Incredible thread was shut down...but re-opened....self policed...and lasted until the Incredible release. In that time people were able to discuss rumors and new findings. That thread was a source of many leaks that ended up being published on several site...including Phandroid..and this was after it had been shut.

If all we wanted to do is talk after the release...we wouldn't have to come here in the first place. But like I said...and without staying on my soap box any longer....a civil thread is a must. To me...the one big no no is when people argue....especially in an ugly way.

Bill, I hope if you do get the thread re-opened....there will be hard warnings to the individuals who created the nastiness. And in fact....a few of them need to be on zero tolerance...one infraction and they're gone! IMNSHO.

I agree. They should be put on probation after a first offence and then banned after a second offence.

Plain and simple. I believe what I believe and others believe what they believe. Some may agree with me some may not. To be honest most of us if not all of us are just trying to peace things together and speculate due to the lack of solid info. I know who I think is sincere and who I think is full of it but I DO NOT AND WILL NOT CALL SOMEONE OUT IN A FORUM! All that ends up happening is what we are left with now. The people who are liars trolls and just plain stupid will all look like fools on their own when we get the real information. Let's face it it isn't their fault that their father brother and sister mother reproduced. :) That being said, PLEASE RE-OPEN THE THREAD!!!! Before I have to make friends in the real world :)

I think the thread title was misleading from the get go.

Re-name it to the "Official HTC Evo 4G Speculation Thread" and no one will get their feelings hurt when someone doesn't agree or disagree with them.

Exactly! And in practical terms...new facts were updated on the first page! Bill did an excellent job. So other than release speculation and banter...what else was there really? If you want the hard cold facts completely filtered of opinion, speculation...and all the other stuff that comes with a community forum...then you need only go to page one.

It's not so much when it will open, it's more like will people ignore the ignorant comments?
Even if it's directed to you or not. When you say anything about it, even if it's humor, your fueling it on. If people can continue to post and ignore it, then it will be drowned out and have no aknowledgement. Don't even mention it. Talking about it keeps it alive. Trying to tell that person to chill etc is pointless. Just ignore it and I'm pretty sure it'll stop cause then that person will be the only one talking and die out cause nobody cares. So I honestly think everyone or mostly everyone contributed to it in some way, just by having their opinion or want to be peacemaker post. Cause this is a forum and there will always be a little debate which is cool, but when it get's to that childish mess ignore it.

okay people, this is the deal, i am trying to determine a problem in the EVO thread and until i can determine if my theory is correct, it will have to stay closed.

Maybe i should explain my self to avoid 100 posts asking what the hell do i mean.

Okay, I encountered the very same issue that fell on the recently closed Incredible thread and that issue is that moderators cannot see the thread. Thereby we cannot moderate it.
In that Incredible thread problem, we could not see any page except the last one. Only Admins and Guides could, but the owner and us mods could not.

A week or so ago, the same thing happened to the EVo thread to me on page 133 or was it 136, can't remember now, but rest assured that it did happen. But this time it was the reverse. at that time the last page was 136, and i could not see it, a total blank page. Anything before and thereafter i could.

Some say that the database could be corrupt and yes that would be true if the EVO thread was 5000 pages long like the Incredible one, but the EVo is 1 third the size. I think its a bug. A bug that occurs every so often when a thread is repeatedly has it posts, merged, deleted moved etc. now don't take this as fact, its only my theory and opinion. But anyway, after Saturdays-Sundays fiasco, i had to go in and clean it up. i finally finished at 1:30 in the morning (3 hours past my bed time) and then I noticed i could not see page 169, the last page in the thread. So here we are.

Now I'm thinking that since that last page has 44 posts in it and its 50 posts per page, if i post another 7 posts, it will push it onto another page and thus we mods can see the thread again and moderate it. but if it doesn't work, then rest assured that there is no way in hell I am going to re-open that thread if it cannot be moderated by staff, since as we can purely see, letting you guys self moderate is not working out.

So there you have it, the reason why the EVO thread is not re-opened yet.
i will try again in a few minutes and see.

But if i can open it up again, be aware that we will not tolerate any crap in that thread. That thread is too important and to heavily watch by outside sources for it to be destroyed by a few vindictive egotistical troll jerks from another forums.

Which reminds me, ajac09 has been banned, and once I re-read the thread at a more leisurely pace instead of rushing like I did last night, i will issue infractions to those that contributed to its closing. After tomorrow Tuesday, there will be other staff members keeping tabs on this sections and will not hesitate to do whats necessary to keep it in line.

TS out

I actually agree with you - I'm just stating my own personal reasons for why I think that thread was moving out of control. But yeah, I used to have my favorite'd link set right to that thread, but with all of the release date talk that was really just wild speculation, I set it to the EVO forum instead and now I'm just keeping an eye out for interesting threads. So yup, I stopped looking at it.

At the end of the day, it's not a big deal. Most of the issues strike me as stemming from organizational qualms. We have a whole forum here to play in where we can use multiple threads to discuss multiple topics and keep it organized. The general state of unrest from the information blackout is probably doing a number on some of us, as well. There hasn't been any new rumors (from the insiders) for weeks now, really.

I actually hope that thread stays closed now that I think about it. Set up an information thread and a rumors thread that are locked and only the mods can edit or something. Keep the real info in its own section, keep the rumors in its own section, and let all of the discussion / theories occur in their own threads. I think those who get emotional about these things are going to continue to get emotional about it regardless of how unproductive it is, but at least it would be easier to filter through.

You are right on target. By nature, we want to point out the mistakes of others and also by our nature, we seem to want to see a good fight. If we can just restrain ourselves a little, we could easily avoid replicating negative posts and move on.

If you look below each poster's name (left of the screen), you will see a triangle with "!" in it. We should all use it when we spot a post that is inappropriate, or all criticism and no constructive value. I bet Mods and Admins would put a quick stop to it, rather than letting a day go bye, before they have their next chance to read through everything.
