Taking a DVD and watching it on phone

Does anyone know the steps I'd need to take to get the video from a DVD onto my phone to watch? I want to watch some stuff on an airplane, and the phone is easier to handle than my laptop.

I know how to rip the DVD to an ISO on my PC. I have used Handbrake to convert other videos to be viewable on my phone. What I don't know are the necessary intermediate steps.

Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to use Handbrake and open the ISO as the source (or the DVD media if you have it). Then use the iPhone preset to convert the video to mp4 (make sure the output file extension is mp4 not m4v). The preset will use about 480 pixels width, which is perfect for an Eris or any phone with 480x320 resolution. If you have a Droid or something with 854x480, then you might try using the Universal preset which gives about 700 pixels width (let the phone upscale - should still look fine).

You can test your encode easily by just doing 1 chapter at first. This will encode very quickly. If it looks good, then go ahead and encode the entire movie.

Taking it straight from the disc worked like a charm, although the files are HUGE (about 380 meg per hour). I should have known it could do that.

Any advice on getting the file size smaller?

You can adjust the Constant Quality factor to yield a smaller rip. Take it down by 3 - 5 points, and see how you do (should not notice any quality difference). Also encode the audio at no higher than 128 kbps. You could even do 92 to save some space.

Forgot to mention that you could also just specify a target size for the encode. As long as you're reasonable about the size, it should look fine. Probably could do 300 MB for 90 minute movie. Most rips I see in the wild are about that.

With tweaking the quality and the audio bitrate, I'm down to about 290 meg for an hour, so that's a good improvement. Good enough for now, I suppose.

Handbrake doesn't rip DVD's from the disk. It only converts them after they've been ripped, I think.

I use Clone DVD Mobile from SlySoft.com. Copying a DVD to your mobile video machine is achieved in a few mouse clicks and without the need to rip it to your hard-disk. Note that copying protected DVDs also requires AnyDVD.

Doubletwist does not rip, but everything else is automated. Once the movie is on your PC it does the rest. No fiquring out bitrates and encoding, screensize, audio codec. Just select video, plug your phone in and sync. It converts, compresses and syncs. Results have been great audio sound level is correct, video size is full screen, correct brightness everything. I like it. And it does music and podcasts too.

Once I have the disc in an ISO format I just use Handbrake with the iPhone preset and kick the resolution up for 720 pixels to match the DVD resolution, from there I just copy to the phone and play, which the quality at that resolution looks great!

1. Purchase DVDFab, which will "rip" the DVD and put it on my computer,
2. Move the movie from the computer to the phone's card.

or

2. Use CloneDVD to copy it onto my phone.

But if I did the second version, would I need CloneDVD? Couldn't I just use AnyDVD to rip it onto my computer, then move it from there to my phone?

I am only interested in getting a purchased DVD onto my phone (Cliq). I don't want to watch it on my computer or ipod or anything else. Does that make a difference?

Of any of the previously mentioned programs, which one would be the most user friendly and cheap?

Your only doing half the necessary work in either 1 or 2 above. By this I mean if you did the above, you would have a huge set of files in a format that the phone has no idea of. The necessary steps involved are:

1) Rip (disc -> hard drive bypass copy protection)
2) Encode (change format from mpeg 2 (dvd) to h.264 (aka mp4))

Step 2 will also shrink the size down to something manageable for the phone. You want the end size of the MP4 to be 300 - 400 MB for a feature length film.

The easiest way I can think to do this is by using Handbrake. It will rip and encode all at once. Now here's the catch. If you are using Windows, Handbrake will not decrypt the disc. You would need AnyDVD for that purpose. If you use a Mac, then just Handbrake will do.

Use the "iPhone" preset and you should be good. The only other thing I can think of is that Handbrake by default will make the output file extension be ".m4v" and you would just need to change it to "mp4".

The Handbrake forums should give you enough information to get started.

I'm interested in video dimensions, frame rates and sound quality etc...I've recently ripped a couple of DVD movies to MP4 at the same quality (but not picture dimensions) as the rip to AVI format for the same films and the file sizes are up to 3x as the AVI conversions....

The pictures and sound are great but each movie ends up at 1Gb......when the equivalent AVI is 300-400Mb.

This obviously quickly chews up available storage...even with the 16Gb SD card I have...

The desire has a hi-res screen of 800x480. That is just about the dimensions of a DVD (854x480 anamorphic widescreen). If you want to encode your MP4 at a width of 800, then you'll end up with large files like you are seeing.

If you want to keep the size down to 3-400 MB, then you're going to have to probably keep the width of the encode to 480 or so. Also keep the audio to 128 Kbps or less. It should still look fine on the screen.

One thing I like about Handbrake is that you can specify a target encode size. It will adjust compression accordingly to meet that size.
