first off, let me say "Hi". got my Eris about 3 months ago and been lurking ever since . i've enjoyed reading just about every single page of all the stickied threads -fascinating stuff. you all seem pretty knowledgeable (OTD, Caddyman, etc) and look forward to reading you thoughts on this. Here's the scenario:

i have an Eris and my girlfriend has an EnV2... she will soon be upgrading to the Incredible. she suggested we swap phones once she gets the Inc, since she doesn't really need all that extra fancy stuff -i reluctantly agreed :D... so yesterday, just for kicks, i brought this up to a store tech and she said that wouldn't be a problem, but once the phone comes off the original account it was activated on, the manufacturer voids the 1-year warranty... ergo i wouldn't have a warranty on the Inc, nor would she have one on the Eris post swap. does this sound crazy, or is it just me?

secondly, would it really be as simple as i imagine? just swapping phones & switching ESN's on our respective accounts once her Inc is activated???

sorry for the long post... i figure it's my first, might as well make it a doozy! LoL -look forward to reading your replies... thanks.

We have four phones on our account. We've used each other's upgrade several times, with no problem, or warranty issues. My wife just upgraded to the Incredible with my 10 year old's upgrade. I upgraded to the Eris in Feb with my 12 year old's upgrade.

You should be good to go.

I think the OP is saying that he and his girlfriend have separate account. It would basically be the same as if you bought a phone off someone and activated it. I know someone who was told that they'd be out of warranty for doing this but I can't remember the final outcome. Interested to know on this one.

Welcome!

I was told similiar things when I switched my old Env for my wife's LG Dare (she got the Samsung Rogue) They said we would lose the current 1 yr if I took over her Dare.

Well later on, my dog actually bit my Dare, cracked the screen. I took it in to my local store and they gave me a refurb for free. So much for no warranty.

Say there is a warranty issue going forward. Ask the same Verizon person if the warranty would apply if you swapped phones before making the claim. In other words, say the Eris has an issue. You switch the Incredible back to your gf's account, switch the Eris back to your account, then make the warranty claim.

Is the warranty forfeited as soon as you switch accounts, or would it still apply if the original owner brought that phone in for service?

yeah, we're on separate accounts... good to know you have some wiggle room as far as upgrades with the family plan -that may definitely be an option for us in the future, but since we've been together less than a year, for right now it's separate accounts.

doogald: that's an interesting point -hadn't thought about that. i would imagine that if it's such a big deal, it probably voids as soon as it comes off the first time.

i'm thinking it may not be so bad anyway, as we'll both be paying the extra $7/month (here in NJ) for the insurance and extended warranty on each phone -should be covered one way or another. i guess we'll see what happens.

OfTheDamned: :p -LoL

so, yeah... she went ahead and ordered the Incredible last night :) -hopefully we won't even need to worry about the whole warranty issue [fingers crossed]. looks like it probably won't be shipping out 'til the 14th due to high demand. dammit! first the wait for Eclair, now this! -with my luck, the Eris OTA update will hit before this thing even comes in! (which would be awesome!) LoL

No, the 2.1 OTA will come the day before the devs find root for the current leaks. ;)

just an update (if anyone cares)...
so my gf's Inc shipped out on the 6th and got to her place on Friday, the 7th. i set it up for her that night and she was really liking it, especially Swype. she spent all weekend messing with it and showing it off, then we finally swapped phones on Sunday night... so her Inc is now my Inc! :) -she's really liking the Eris and can't wait for that OTA to hit (which i promised she would get soon) -LoL

im no parent but, why would a 10 and 12 yr old have phones? i was rocking a gt bike and my brothers deactivated beeper when i was about that age, how the times have changed.

It is actually very common for kids that age to have phones now. Smartphones are a different story, but regular phones....they are incredibly handy.
