Trackball Doesn't Scroll Down

Yeah I had to go to the Verizon Store on Thursday to get mine replaced. It got so bad the phone was unusable because it kept scrolling left. Unfortunately they were out of stock they had to send it via 2 day shipping because Fedex doesn't ship weekends. And now I have a crippled phone until Monday at least.

Still, the guy in the store was a nice fellow and actually knew what he was doing (he had an Incredible so he wasn't clueless to Android). From what he could pull up, he read that it may be poor solder that connects the trackball sensors to the board. After the phone gets so hot, the solder comes loose so certain directions stop working. It seems plausible to me. Frisco might be right about poor quality control when they were building Eris's.

Whitewallman also seems to prove this to be true. When he mashed it in, it may have reconnected the solder somehow so it works.

I had the same scrolling issue. My Eris (2nd one) would automatically scroll down if you happen to hold or touch below the track ball. It was really annoying and I was going to call Verizon for a replacement phone. I noticed today that it wasn't happening anymore. Then I realized that I can't scroll down anymore with my track ball.

2 things could have happened, either the hardware failed or my suspicion is Verizon purposely disabled the 'scrolling down with track ball' as a fix with a background software update. Don't know how to confirm this.

I seriously doubt the latter. Its more than likely a hardware problem. Just take your Eris into Verizon if it happens again and they will get you a new one, since its obviously a manufacturing defect.

Bringing mine back to the store tonight. I've been putting up with it for 2 months and it's just getting worse. I hated to do it because I've only gotten the Silent bug a couple of times. It's been a good phone otherwise. Was rooted with xtrSense, just reloaded the factory ROM. Because of the scrolling problem I'm having a hard time getting it set up again so I can use it as a phone for the day.

I had to send a phone back because the screen was scrolling left. My current phone had a problem the other day in which I could not scroll backwards. It felt like a piece of dirt in there so I cleaned really well and pressed on the ball. All is working well now. I hope it stays that way. I don't like the chance of getting another phone that may be completely screwed up.

I had the same problem, trackball wouldn't scroll down. I stumbled upon this video in a thread over at XDA. It sounds stupid, but worked like a charm. My trackball works like new, and it is very simple. The video is actually for a blackberry trackball, but it worked for my eris.

Try it, can't hurt and might save the trouble of getting a replacement.
