I remember a couple years back there was an announcement of a new phone os that was simplistic and looked futuristic. It never saw the light of day. It had a black theme. I searched google and couldn't find anything. Anyone have any idea of what it was called?

I don't think so. The one I remember looked different. Had a black theme. I remember the dialer looked awesome.
What else can you recall about it? Any details might help, such as a more specific time frame, or its price, or features it was supposed to have, etc.

BTW, I thought mikedt had hit it with his guesses.

Could have been the early prototype of Android that was seen briefly on a device looking a lot more like a BlackBerry

There was the briefly-seen BlackBerry Z10 that had a 'Hub' and was entirely gesture based, but it was more recent and flopped as fast as it launched. the first time i ever saw anything new disappear that fast in the Best Buy. one week there was this rather elaborate Z10 display, the next, *poof*

But, to be honest, the most likely relevant to the OP's question is more likely WebOS. it died pretty soon after, when HP gave up on it. it has recently been revived on the latest LG Smart TVs but it's laggy as heck, the remote to open the large ribbon of 'cards' that takes up half the screen took two minutes to appear when i hit the apps button on the demo's remote. WebOS was seen on the Palm Pre iirc not sure what other models it graced.

Given how polished WebOS was in its early days, it's quite a shame to see the horridly ugly take on Vizio's 'ribbon' of apps that LG has turned WebOS into, that takes up quite a bit of usable space on such a large screen

Nope. The one I remember looks way better and newer. It was its own os and phone. 2010 or 2011. Around that time. It had a very futuristic interface. It had a pie controls type interface

There was the Helio Ocean and siblings, but that's the only phone running its 'own' OS that i'm familiar with that no one has yet mentioned. the adverts used to say 'don't call it a phone' and its most brag-worthy feature was MySpace Mobile, but of course, MySpace flopped not long after.

There was also the Nokia N-Gage but it was earlier than 2010 and ran Symbian.
