Can Tasker do this, and how?

Hello,

I'm New to Tasker..

I prefer to keep mobile data off to save battery. I only switch it on when needed.

Now, I have this one app that looks up numbers online when someone who is not in my contacts calls me. Obviously this doesn't work when data traffic is off.

So I would need to have Tasker turn on mobile data when someone calls me so that the app can look the number up.

Is this possible, and how?

I believe you'll need the app, "secure settings" in order to toggle data. You should be able to create a profile that checks incoming calls (on my tasker, its under EVENTS > PHONE RINGING). Then create a task that enables data via secure settings (or you can also have it turn off/on airplane mode as well).

on exit, you can have it disable data again.

Thanks! I actually managed to this in Tasker: activating mobile data when someone calls. The problem is only that the telephone book app opens before data is activated and reports that there is no data Connection...

Managed to do this in Tasker. But I think what I want is not doable, at least not in Tasker. You can use this telephone app in two ways: 1. open the app manually, enter a person's name and it looks up the person's Telephone number, 2. via the app's preferences you can have the app open (in a small window on the screen) when someone calls and it automatically finds the caller's name.

With Tasker I only manage to open the full version of the program (1 above) and not the version that checks the number automatically.

Google Translate indicates that the checkbox you're looking for is the 1st one (Svein beat me to it! I was really slow answering then...).

My guess is that the auto look up feature is only triggered by the 'phone ringing' event. As there is no data connection at this point, we can't use it.

If only there were a delay function in the app's preferences that would allow the data connection to kick in first.

I keep my data on for now. I've disabled all automatic notifications in various apps and I check email manually. But does having the data on drain more battery in itself even when no data is downloaded? Does anyone know?

It will use a bit more battery but you need to balance having a full battery against having a useful phone.
