First of all, I'm old in age ;) and new to all this android stuff. What I need to know is does this verizon Samsung Galaxy 5 model G900V need to be unlocked (or is it unrooted?) in order to use it with a different carrier? If so, where can I find information on doing so?

I wasn't sure if this was the correct place to ask this, so if I have violated any rule or policy, please forgive me and call it old age.

Thanks

Welcome to AndroidForums ThatGuy.:)

A) You are in the correct place to ask.
B) There would be no admonishment for posting in the wrong place, a staffer would just move it to the best place to get you an answer and probably send a friendly Private Message letting you know where to find your question.:)
C) Rooting (gaining administrative privileges) and unlocking (enabling the phone to be activated on another carrier) are two different things. Because Verizon is a CDMA carrier, I'm not sure you would have much luck going to another carrier, but if so, you would have to go through Verizon to do the unlocking.

The VZW phones can be used with other carriers, you must have the correct SIM card for it.

That card will provision the phone for the carrier of your choice.

See my VZW Preferred network mode list.

When I received the phone, the default was on "Global", ergo, it will work anywhere in the world. I changed it to LTE/CDMA simply because I am land locked

Well it appears I have conflicting answers. My phone is set to Global as in your image. I did not set it that way so I assume it came out of the factory that way. I'll just test it with another carriers sim card. I am assuming that I should return the phone to it's factory settings before I attempt it?

Depending on the SIM, you may need to enter APN info.

For example when I use a t-mobile SIM in my verizon S5, I need to enter tmobile's APN info.

Do a google for your SIM carrier's APN and you should find the info you need.

You'll get a constant nag that the SIM is not a verizon sim.

I could not care less about the nag. I looked into my setting and at this time I can not edit anything but the name of the APN. Will I be able to edit it once there is a different sim card in place?

SUCCESS! :smokingsomb: Now if I root the phone and install a different system will that get rid of the nag?

Never mind... I just saw the post that says the verizon version can not be rooted (yet)...

I just got the same model and am using it with MetroPCS. How do I get the message about the Sim card to go away? Also I am having trouble with the voice mail. When I hold the number 1 it will dial into the voice mail but when it asks for my password and I enter it, the phone acts as if it is not recognizing the key tones and after 3 attempts it says "Thank you for calling, goodbye" and hangs up on me, therefore I cannot access voice mail from the phone, but can from a land line phone. Any suggestions?

It would help a lot if you just modified the auto-dial script for your voice mail so you don't have to manually enter the password.

This is specific to a Verizon phone, but it should steer you in the right direction.

  • Click on phone symbol
  • then three dots (menu)
  • settings
  • Call
  • Voice mail Settings
  • click on voice mail number
  • after the *86 ( for Verizon, yours might be different? )
  • enter this text => ,,XXXXX# ( XXXX = your passcode )
  • now Save it

What this does is to add a couple of pauses (the commas) and then it dials out the additional digits which represent your password. The # sign is required by Verizon, your carrier might want something different or nothing at all.
