Snapdragon 810: Worth the wait?

Hello,
I'm looking to upgrade my phone (a Galaxy S2 right now, pretty old), and I'm pretty sure I want the Note 4. However, while its 805 is currently the fastest processor out, next year the 810 will come out with an ARMv8 64-bit architecture and it's supposed to be a very substantial increase, with its Adreno 430 rumored to be 30% faster than the Adreno 420 in the 805. As much as I could use a new phone, is it worth it to wait for a device with a Snapdragon 810?

I agree with Sully. It really depends on a couple of factors though.

If you are relatively satisfied with your current phone, don't mind waiting a year possibly more, and are willing to pay top dollar - then yes it is worth the wait.

On the other hand - we have reached the point where hardware improvements are providing negligible returns except for in games and certain intensive apps. For instance I just bought a OnePlue One to replace my Galaxy S3. While the OnePlus is couple generations ahead of the S3 - for the most part in real world usage there isn't much difference. Keep in mind also that while you will have the bleeding edge hardware - most software is going to optimized for what is in the market - so primarily 801/805 processors. On the other hand though - you can maximize the lifecycle by buying early (although that may also entail early production run problems as well).

Ultimately it is up to you. Something new and better is always coming but do you really need to replace what you have?

Probably a good choice. 64 bit isn't really an amazing breakthrough. It just allows you to have more than 4 GB of RAM among other small things. The GPU might be nice, but ask yourself what your gaming needs are. I don't play much anymore myself, so in my case, it would be irrelevant. But for somebody who is always buying the newest games on the Play Store, than it might be beneficial.

There's much more to be gained from 64-bit processing than that; it's far more efficient and accurate.

I completely agree with the general sentiment here... waiting for "the next big thing" will only end with you dying of old age with an obsolete device. Something better is always just around the corner.

I'm glad you decided to go for the new phone because as someone already said, hardware is constantly advancing. If you wait for the next best thing, it'll never come because there's always something better around the corner.

If you want a new phone, get whats out there. If you're going to lose sleep over not waiting for the 810, then wait for it but its probably not going to be worth waiting another year for, IMO.
