How to open and use Text/Excel files in Android?

There are some good free apps that do what you need. I use and recommend Kingsoft Office (which I can't find on Google Play at the moment) but there are others to choose from, like Quickoffice for example :)

Edit: it seems the name and logo of Kingsfoft Office has changed, which is why I couldn't find it. It's apparently now called WPS Mobile Office and other than the makeover appears to be the same as the one I use.

For simple text files I generally use the editor built into the excellent free ES File Explorer - an app that I consider essential on any Android device, even those that already have some sort of file manager.

John Bean, QuickOffice seems like missing, link not working.

Odd, works for me. It's a Google app too, so there shouldn't be any Play Store issues.

Besides ES File Explorer, what other apps do you think are essential apps or apps you find useful?

One man's essential app is another man's useless bloat. I mentioned ES Explorer in the context of your original query since it is by far (IMO) the best app for handling files of any kind on Android and has handy built in editors and viewers plus the ability to open files in any other available app, but my other app choices are down to my usage and preferences and unlikely to match yours.

Now if you asked about which apps I use in one of my areas of interest that's another question... but I'd have to bang on about my interests first and we'd be here all day ;-)

It usually means for personal (ie not business) use. The term "home use" is confusing, many people run businesses from home and lots of personal activites are away from home :)

Did you try the Kingsoft Office app? I find it better (more complete) than the Microsoft one anyway. Google's Quickoffice isn't particularly good so you're not missing much by not having it available where you are.
