Root Hello, looking to change kernel for first time, maybe?

I am wanting to change kernel, I think. I would like to try to get more time our of a charge. I see people posting about getting better sot and also saw that some kernels allow fast charging (not sure what that is, but sounds interesting). I am running the DU weekly right now. I don't much about CPU settings but I think they're are some built into the Rom but am not sure if this will help me. Thanks in advance

If you want to change the kernel that came with the ROM you need a special app such as TricksteMOD

I guess you would also need a similar app to adjust the settings if you flashed another custom kernel.

You can flash any aosp based kernel with du. To name a few: code blue, furnace, elementalx, Franco...

SO, I D/l'd the trickster kernel app and tried using the lock speed setting but it would be automatically turned off and then both speeds (max and min) were set around 1.7. I woke up to a low battery even though it was on the charger and the phone was burning up hot! Reflashed stable weekly and trying to charge now. I really hoping I did not ruin this battery by overheating, I was barely able to hold onto it because it was so hot. Seems to be charging so far, going to see how long it takes to get from 10% to 100. Anybody know average time for a full charge?

Your not the only one who can't get the stock du kernel frequencies to stop screwing around. I can never set it to anything because somehow the minimum frequency gets tweaked passed 300mhz... That's why I use a different kernel because the frequencies stick to what picked on trickster, fku, etc...

OK, so I might need a bit of help with the Kernel Install. Do I just Flash through recovery, and do I need to reflash anything else or wipe?
I have also been getting about 10% per hour on charging, that sounds normal? Does anyone agree?

There used to be a kernel tweaker built into the settings but they got rid of it. You need a kernel tuning app. TricksterMOD is a good free one.

You might try that if you want the stock kernel.


As for flashing another kernel, yes, just flash the zip via recovery like a ROM install. Wipe cache and dalvik after flashing. You'll still need an app to alter the custom kernel's stock settings.

You'll see that elementalx uses aroma installer when you flash the zip. This allows you to choose your own default settings prior to flashing the kernel.

Make a backup before changing kernels in case you run into any issues.


As for the charging, that sounds extremely slow. It seems normal if charging on a PC via USB port but not with the wall charger. Are you using the stock cable/charger? You may try enabling fast charge on a kernel that supports the feature and see if it helps.

I am going to wait until tomorrow to try a new Kernel. I am going to see how long a full charge will take. I also wondered if anyone knows if the OEM battery's listed on Amazon for like $20 are legit if this one is compromised.

Got only eleven hours total and three hours sot last night, still taking a while to charge up. I am pretty sure the CPU set at 1.7 locked and trying to charge while so hot hurt this battery. I have disconnected the battery once before, not difficult, but where do I get a OEM battery for a fair price?

Were you screen casting your phone? The reason you got a charge time you weren't expecting was your gapps. Either Google service got stuck updating or you were screen casting.

Screen casting is actually when you cast it to a chromecast or miracast device. Having the device enabled to detect them isn't the same thing.

Try clearing the data in Google play service app and make sure its up to date.

A lot of people really like Franco kernel. Also, you could try the latest test build and see if the feature is working correctly (as I saw someone mention it was).

Just make a backup first just in case.

The new DU kernel is working very well and battery life seems to be great.... One thing to consider is that it may take a day or 2 for the kernel to set-in and reach peak performance and stable out.
I've ran the new stock DU kernel for a couple day on the last few builds... The most recent kernel seams to be running very well with much improved battery life.... But I always end up retuning to Franco Kernel and using Trickster Mod to setting my tweaks and kernel prefferances from there.... Franco is just my personal preference for a kernel. I always recommend trying out a kernel for a couple days to allow it to settle in before trying a new kernel, so that you van get a good idea on how the kernel is going to perform on the current ROM installed.

Also you should be reaching well over 3 hours of SOT on either kernel. I would double check your kernel setting and make sure that the setting are sticking and the you don't have your screen brightness set to max and or always on automatic as this will definitely improve your SOT.

The only way how to do this is download the rom zip file first..Then open in a root explorer app (on android) or using 7-zip, winrar (on pc). The very first page you will see a file call boot.img or boot. Extract that file to your phone (whatever folder you save in is fine). Download an app called "falshify" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify&hl=en), give it root access. Select the FIRST option (BOOT IMAGE), find the file called "boot.img" you recently extracted. Reboot or reboot later, just don't flash another file. You can also flash the file with a pc and usb cable but that's another lesson...

Have you tried monitoring the current with an app ? Usually I get an average 450mA when plugged to the wall and that charges the device 1% per minute. I used: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget&hl=en but I don't think it's accurate compared to a usb volt-amp tester. This is just to make sure that your source of power is actually working and not slacking due to a faulty wall socket, or the charger itself, or even the usb cable.

Yes, boot.img is what is used in the boot partition (kernel) when writing to it. After the app flashed the file, you can go ahead and wipe your dalvik cache.

That should be fine!!

Just make a backup of system,data,boot before you flash a new kernel. Always a good idea before flashing anything just in case. If for whatever reason there is a problem with the new kernel you can simply restore to your previous state; no harm, no foul.
