Help listening to the radio on an HTC 610 phone

I want to listen to BBC Radio4 whilst working in the garden. The the radio app on the phone will only work with a headphone plugged in. I don't want to use headphones with wires as these get caught up and break. Can I use a Bluetooth headset and just plug any old wire into the phone jack socket to enable the app to work?

I believe it depends on the app - if your radio app supports Bluetooth then yes, but you'll still need to plug in regular headphones (they're used as an antenna).

Thanks Kate. Is it that the radio app should support Bluetooth or is it that the phone should support Bluetooth (which it does). How can I find out if the radio app (which came with the HTC610 phone) supports it?

Tune-In Radio app does not require headphones and I've read it can be streamed to BT speakers/headphones. Of course, this will use data as opposed to the phone acting like an FM receiver, although Wi-Fi would be an option if it reaches you when you are weeding!

You could check the radio apps settings to see if there is an option. I'll move this to the 610 forum so hopefully others with the phone will see it

Thanks Pugs 1957 and Kate (again). WiFi isn't an option in our thick walled barn! Now I don't know if the radio on the phone is actually a radio or an app - I suspect the latter. Data use is not an issue as I am with Three which has all you can eat data. I'll just have to get some Bluetooth headphones and suck it and see.

The fm radio in htc 610 is built in the phone. You still need a headphone plugged in as an antenna to listen to the radio via loudspeaker. You can try cut an old headphone and leave about 2-5 cm cable left and use it as antenna.

Color me embarrassed - you already had that figured in the OP and already said, what about Bluetooth?

I don't have the 610, I do have another HTC, I do know from experience that the radio behaves the same in all of them.

I'll try to track down a Bluetooth playback set this weekend - headphones or speakers (just sold the ones I had ) and let you know what I can find out.

Hmmm, with the FM radio, I think you can not stream the audio out via bluetooth, as the audio jack would be plugged with the antenna/headset cable.

Maybe you can use a Bluetooth audio adapter that has cable and can be plugged into your phone audio jack, use this as antenna and pair your bluetooth headphone with this adapter, not with your phone, see if that works? This is the bluetooth adapter I meant:

I know all smartphones have bluetooth built in, but I have read somewhere that built-in FM radio in android will not allow bluetooth audio streaming (the built-in bluetooth can not access the fm radio audio).

The idea I was proposing, would replace the wired headphone with a wireless headphone, but with a bit of wire still sticking out which I suppose will act as antenna. But you connect your bluetooth headphone to this adapter, not to your htc 610 built-in bluetooth, as the FM radio will not allow built-in bluetooth to acces the audio.

So, as we can not listen FM Radio via bulit-in bluetooth, that bluetooth audio adapter might just be a good solution as it will act as a radio antenna as well.
