I have a feeling that those of us hoping that the Verizon Nexus 6 would be up for pre-order will be sadly mistaken.

Hello, welcome to Verizon Wireless sales chat! My name is Christina P., may I have your name, please?
You: at 11:00:21
I'm looking for where I can pre-order the Nexus 6. The Google Play Store says that pre-orders begin today, but I can't seem to find that here.
Christina P.: at 11:01:45
I do apologize, at this present time, we have not yet started the preorder of the Nexus 6, I do apologize.
You: at 11:01:30
So will I be able to pre-order a Nexus 6 that will work on Verizon from the Play Store today?
You: at 11:02:01
Here is what it says there: Nexus 6 (32GB, Cloud White) Space to explore Versatile 6-inch Quad HD display is good for movies, videos, gaming, e-books, and surfing the web, with round-the-clock battery life. COLOR MEMORY 32 GB 64 GB $649.00 Coming soon. Pre-orders will be available starting on 10/29.
You: at 11:03:05
Are you still there?
Christina P.: at 11:04:02
Okay, Allow me to check some information.
You: at 11:03:17
Okay
Christina P.: at 11:04:59
Okay, the Nexus 6 will not be available at this present time.
Christina P.: at 11:05:07
Did you see this on a verizon website?
You: at 11:05:27
No, that is on Google Play Store. I realize that Google is not Verizon but I also know that Verizon has said they will be carrying the Nexus 6, so I assumed that if it is for sale on Google Play that it would be for sale here as well.
Christina P.: at 11:07:01
We are launching new devices, however, we have not yet received any information on the Devices in which we will be launching soon, at this present time.
You: at 11:06:53
Okay thank you.

What's the point of this? A VZ rep cant say anything about a phone they have no info on. Get it from play store, pop in Sim card, use phone.

I'm betting that Verizon doesn't begin selling the Nexus 6 until 15 days after the Droid Turbo begins shipping. They do not want people buying on launch day, keeping the Turbo for a week then returning it to get a Nexus 6.

My guess for the Verizon Nexus 6 launch date is no earlier than November 16th. Hope I'm wrong.

I agree. I would be shocked to see the Nexus in Verizon stores any time soon. I think we are looming at mid November at the earliest. I wouldn't be surprised if it was late November.

I think the key to this Nexus working on all the carriers and being supported out of the box from the Play Store on ALL the carriers is in the ARs interview:

Ars: How much control do carriers have over the Nexus devices? People think back to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and it got slower updates.

Burke: I don't think we're going to do that. There is carrier testing that has to happen, you can't get away from that, but we're trying to have our updates be frequent. I think the carriers are learning and realizing that's a feature they want. I think these are getting more efficient, and we're getting better at it. Play Auto Installs are also really important.
Ars: Play Auto Installs? What?

Burke: So the idea is as part of setup, Verizon might have some apps that you want like an app that tells you how much you used that month in terms of charges. There's legitimate use cases where you want apps, but you also want those apps to be treated like any other app. What happens now is when you've got a Verizon SIM in the device, it actually installs Verizon apps as part of the setup flow, and then you can remove them if you want as part of the Play Infrastructure. And Verizon can update it.

Cohen: They're not on the system partition.

Ars: Oh ok, so you can remove them?

Cohen: Yes.

Ars: When Lollipop first boots up, the first thing it does is check for updates. What is it checking for?

Burke: In the setup wizard?

Ars: Yeah, the second you turn it on for the first time, it says "searching for updates."

Cohen: Yeah, I don't think we've talked about this much, but there's a lot more update capabilities in setup. We have the ability to push emergency updates during the setup process. These devices establish connectivity and then see if there's some kind of serious problem. If we need to push an OTA down during setup, we'll do that during the setup process, but there are actually other parts of the system we can update during the setup. One of the really interesting and challenging things about stabilizing a platform's release is you kind of have to live with what's in the setup process, because you have to get through setup to get to anything else

Verizon can't be trusted. Who knows what tricks they could be up to. I would LOVE to not have to deal with those scumbags. I need confirmation buying from somewhere other than Verizon and putting in SIM will work.

I agree, but I think this time Google got it right. The "auto install based on sim" really to me screams like something Google pushed for a long time in order to allow a "single device on all carriers". This was probably initially for the Silver program, but it works equally as well for a Nexus ;)

I realize that a VZ CSR can't say anything about the phone unless they are permitted to but I also realize that if a phone is up for "pre-order" today on Play then it COULD be up for pre-order there as well. Just checking.

What is the point of you asking what is the point?

Assuming I can get in on this first wave of pre-orders from the Play store, I'm going to then call Verizon and have them send me out a nano-sim. Hopefully, if all goes well, I'll just be able to pop the new sim card in my Nexus and run with it.

Considering Verizon's track record with Nexus products, I may be being overly optimistic, but that's what I'm hoping for at least! ;)

I simply don't trust Verizon, my experience with them drove home how ruthless and unrelenting they are with every phone they sell. They're all molested with bloatware no matter how much or how little they refuse to sell clean phones.

I always buy and celebrate that I can get them from the Play Store, assured they're pure Nexus, unlocked unbranded (no carrier logo anywhere) and ready to go.

Personally I'm convinced no matter what Google's rules are, theirs not one carrier that won't plaster their name on it. It'll be locked to each carrier at a bare minimum.

I don't think they can legally do that anymore.

I'm starting to think it will be identical no matter if you buy from the Play Store or from Verizon. What will control the minor software differences and pre-installed apps is the sim card you insert.

OK, I get that, but by subscribing and paying money to Verizon you are still "dealing" with them, no? I mean I don't want to deal with Verizon either - so I don't, at all.
