Ok, so now that the phone has been out for a few days i'm curious what everyone thinks...

well coming from windows mobile (winmo fanboy since 2002) to the htc eris, this is by far the best phone i`ve ever owned.
i was ok with my eris, just i needed more speed. over the weekend i learned this phone has the speed i need ++.

Everything is perfect, good battery life, gorgeous, feels great, looks great, awesome apps, easy to use, fast

- my only qualm is that in the direct sunlight I can't see who is calling

I'm not even feeling the need to root right now. I have easytether and don't use it enough to make it worth it to root. Of course that may change when some cool roms come out, but until then i'm just fine. Everything works great, its lightning fast and feels great in my hand.

Very Very good. Can't give it excellent because of some minor email quibbles, mostly Android's fault, and the decision to pack in a low power battery, which can be fixed by an extended battery.

In the end, though, it's the best phone out there right now IMHO.

I am coming from BB which I have been using for nearly 10 years. I have had an iPhone too in addition. I am finding the DI to be very frustrating personally. The buzzkill items so far for me are; email push/retrieval as I do not solely use gmail, the time delay to get an email is too long, unless you happen to be opening the email client just to force it to sync. Next issue is the number of steps it takes to send/reply to a text. This process is far to complex. From the unlocking of the phone to tapping on the message, then compose, send and back out to get to the next message and start again. Every time a new message/email comes in and I touch the icon at the top left of the screen I get taken to the desk clock, then I have to back out and go back and drag the screen all the way down. I just felt that with the BB, I knew all the shortcuts so I was far more productive. The text entry has been challenging, more so then the iPhone I would say. I have downloaded swype which is fun, however I really am unsure on how much time it saves me as I continually must make corrections. Last issue is closing out or quitting an App is there an easy way?

The screen size and display are brilliant. The phone is a bit to thin in my hands and I am scared to death of scratching the camera lens.

I am a heavy email user and texter as I own a business. I have not played around with the Apps much as I mainly read blogs and news. Is this the best phone for me, tbd, I would like to love it, just really frustrating at the moment.


So to date, this phone has cost me a ton of time and plenty of frustration. I fear that it is not bomb proof if dropped or sat on. Does that mean it is not for me, no. There is no love for it yet, no matter how hard I try. You asked for what people think and this is my take on it. I appreciate all the help from this community as I have learned a lot, and you have helped with many headaches. The battle to learn to love this phone/OS rages on.

Your usage needs definitely don't seem to fit with this phone. If you own a business and are a heavy email user and texter, I don't think a touch screen phone is for you personally. Which is ok, this phone won't be for everyone obviously. If it was, there wouldn't be a BB, etc.

I'm coming from a BB Storm (well, still using it for work) and a Moto Razr, also an iPod Touch first gen. This thing blows them all away. I have to disclaim that I'm a fully integrated google service user so this makes the most sense for me. Gmail is better than the BB, and leaps and bounds better than the iPod touch. I like the bigger screen for typing, and while I do realize there's some sort of compromise with a soft keyboard vs a physical one, Swype really narrows the gap for me. I can write out emails, texts, even posts on here quickly and accurately using Swype...and in portrait mode at that (I was strictly a landscape-mode user with conventional touchscreen typing). Definitely better than the BB and the ipod touch. Browsing is fast. The phone is super responsive. Battery life has been fine for me considering how powerful of a phone this is. I can typically drop it on the charger at lunch time, and I have a car charger. May opt for the bigger battery from Verizon later on. Android market could use some more quality titles but hopefully that will come in time. At least the vast majority of apps are free compared with paid on Apple's app market.

You need to read up on the tips and tricks forums to learn shortcuts for the phone. Try downloading handcent from the market. It will change your texting experience. Coupled with swype it is amazing.

You should try Handcent SMS with the pop-up on. Right after unlocking, there will be a pop-up on your screen with the text, and you can reply right there. I'm not a fan of the stock text messaging system either, but what's great about Android is you can get apps to make up for issues like this.

+1 for Handcent. Don't let anyone tell you about others (Chomp, etc...)...Handcent is clear winner.

I rated it "Very Good" - someone else mentioned the outdoor viewing problem. I knew about it from reviews, but I never expected that I'd be completely unable to see it in some cases. I'm hoping an anti-glare screen protector from Boxwave will help.

Also, I had to do a Factory Reset from the menus because the FM radio just plain broke the first time I tried to use it. Seems to be working now, but I've only used it once so far.

I foresee the battery potentially being a problem, too. With all the capabilities of this phone, it's hard to see how anyone using it to even a fraction of its potential wouldn't need to always keep a charger with them.

I'm coming from the BB Curve 8330 (the old one) so this thing is leaps and bounds ahead of that phone. I'm a geek and the BB was my first smartphone - it basically just whet my appetite for the Incredible. Glad I got the BB first though - it showed me the possibilities of a smartphone and kept me mostly satisfied until the Incredible came out.

I, too, came from a BB, so I feel your pain. I have 4 email accounts that I need to sync on a consistent basis (Exchange Activesync) and nothing beats the BB for that. Each account had it's own little envelope with a notification when mail came in. Android does not do that yet. Actually, the native email app will only allow 1 AES account, the rest having to be either iMap or POP3. But... you knew there was a but in there, I started hating the BB due to the antiquated interface, lack of apps, and awful internet access. So I tried the Eris (very similar to this phone) and spent 6 months learning it. Now I love it, but it still doesn't do email as well. What I did do was download Touchdown for email at a cost. With it I can sync 4 accounts but not at the same time. Also, email comes quicker with TD than it did with BB's 15 minute delay at times. Give TD a try for a 5 day free, full version trial. And get Handcent as the mod suggested, disable notifications on the default SMS app and play around for a few weeks. You'll know if you can live with it in 2 weeks or so. Best of luck, ask questions and decide for yourself.

Or, as I do, keep a spare battery for those times without a charger. I bought an OEM from Verizon and keep it in my jeans change pocket. Never have to worry even at the airport. I still gave it an "excellent" rating.

Coming from a BB Storm 2, this phone is absolutely amazing. Honestly, when I moved from my dumbphone to my BB, i got this CRAZY wow factor, i was obsessed with my phone and felt attached to it.

I then went from my first berry (Bold 9000) to my Storm 2 ... i mean, granted it was my first touch screen phone .. i still didn't get that "wowie". Within two days it was "old news"

This phone has brought back my addiction!!!! There is just so much to do, crazy fast speed, awesome integration with google apps. Honestly I couldn't ask for anything more.

I was always a defender of BB's. Even on the CB forums the common excuse was "android is a toy / no bbm" ... honestly, (ymmv) I am FAR more productive on my android device, and could care less about BBM .... I have come to realize that BBM is just a propriatary SMS/IM ...

Do you know if PDANet requires root? I can't use Easy Tether because I have a Macbook. Not compatible. I know I can use PDANet with my Mac because I did it when I had my rooted Eris...but I'm having trouble now. Can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong or if it's because the phone isn't rooted.

Thank you all for the handcent suggestion, I have it installed and will test it out. Next step will be to check out TD when I find the time. I do agree not every phone is for every one, however I would like to try and give this phone a fair shot. It may not meet my needs but I will run it through its paces for a few weeks to try. There is no question that the BB browser is dreadful, that is why I carry a mifi and labtop or the iPhone.

I have downloaded the 206 page manual and I try and stay up to date with the Tips and Tricks.

+1+1+1+1 I forgot my Mifi today and missed my TP2 since it could act as a wifi hot spot. I'm still getting used to the RDP $20.00 program I downloaded. The Windows RDP was easier to read the screen even though it did not have pinch zoom capability. I also kinda miss exploring my SD card from the phone. I gave the Incredible an Excellent because I know every new phone has some issues or bugs to work through but the speed and feel is worth it alone.

I voted "very good" only because of battery life and the lousy track pad, Otherwise the phone is excellent. Thankfully unlike the IPhone this battery is easily replaceable and the boot up time is only 30 seconds vs 5 minutes for the Blackberry Storm 2 I had before.
