Just bought a 32gb Nexus 5, have a few questions

Well... The plan WAS to get a nex6, but I see I'm not the only one who felt the loyal nexus consumers got hosed on that one. I had a N4 since its release, skipped the N5 as my 4 was still going strong, and I didn't see a reason to jump to the N5 , which I didn't think was THAT big of a difference.. Well a few months ago my N4 took a crap, and I said I was just going to wait for the N6.. When I found out it was $700, I went out and bought a crap ( ATT ZTE radiant ) just to get me by.. WHat a mistake and a joke this phone is... To many reasons to explain, honestly.



Anywho... I might still buy a N6 if it becomes available this year and give my N5 I just ordered to my GF , but for now I needed something bad, and fast, and the N5 was my only option. SO is there anything I need to know about the phone? Any must have apps I may have missed over the past year, anything NOT to download onto it? ANd looking for suggestions on cases as well

AS of now the Ringke Fusion, Spigen NEO Hybrid, and Ultra fit seem to look like pretty good ones..?

Probably not a lot to tell you after so much time with a Nexus 4. It's faster, more powerful, but not quite as pretty. I owned a Nexus 4, but this is the best handheld I have owned. I'd love the bigger screen of a Nexus 6, but can't justify the trade up with my Nexus 5 still working like new.

Ha, I know what you mean.. Which is exactly why I didnt give up my N4 last year when the 5 came out...

But the 6....... Man I want that phone, lol.. to ME, personally I would pay the 700 just for the added quality of the camera, Video and screen..


But I can make due with the 5 as its a great phone, but after waiting 2 years, the 6 sure is tempting.. IS there any new news on when they might have more inventory on google play? With my luck, Im sure it will be right after I get everything setup on my 5 , to only have to restore it to give it to the girlfriend

I agree about the sentiments of not upgrading from 5 to 6. I would love to have one, but I just can't justify the cost when my 5 is flawless. I did order the 9 though.

It's really impossible to know when more stock will be available. As for cases, I have the neo hybrid from spigen and have no complaints.

The nexus 5 is quite an amazing phone for the price, I to have the 32gb black just came it about two weeks ago, amazing price. As far as ordering the 6 I can't lol too expensive at the moment, case I use Spigen Ultra Hybrid black, feels good in the hand, protective as well

Thanks guys.. I know Im not getting the latest and the greatest , but Im excited for this n5 to get here.. Especially after having this constantly freezing, bloatware infested, slow, laggy, pre paid piece of garbage since my n4 took a dive... Worst $50 Ive ever spent haha..

If you guys have a screen protector, does either of your Spigen cases get under it on the edges?

I don't have a screen protector. It was a big step for me to even purchase my first case. I just hate case. I had considered a screen protector and had I gotten one it would have been the tempered glass screen protector that is compatible with my case. I cannot stand those plastic screen protectors.

The glass on phones is pretty durable. I've never had an issue with scratches. But I don't live in a particularly sandy area either which I hear is rough on screens.

Well, I do have a case, and a screen protector only protects from left side impacts...

I don't use either screen protectors or a case. Haven't since my Palm TX. That would be a TX, a Nokia 5800, a Nexus One, A Nexus 4 and a Nexus 5, all naked and unbroken.

One last thing. Does it make a difference what charged I use? I have a bunch of the droid chargers ( micro USB or whatever they are ) for home and a few car chargers. But does it make a difference what the voltage or amperage is? Trying not to hurt what seems to be an already weak battery.

I use various chargers and the only difference I see is the Nexus charger seems to charge faster.

As for screen protectors, I cannot speak highly enough about Ghost Armor. It's pricey at about $20 for one screen protector, but it has a lifetime warranty. I've had the same one on my Galaxy S2 for three years and the same one on my Nexus 5 for one year.

Case wise, I've been through a few lightweight cases and settled on an Amzer Pudding TPU. Pretty cheap, money wise, but is durable and a lot more resistant to scratches and marks than any other case I've had. I'm super anal about the littlest marks on my phone and case. Doesn't interfere with the screen protector either.

Most Micro USB chargers will work, some will charge quicker then others depend on the amps

Also what do you guys use for a text message app? I noticed this phone automatically installed hangouts as a default messenger , which I have never used. Is there any real benefit to hangouts over just a base messanger app?

Also any good apps to download or stay away from? The phone runs so smooth and fast , I just don't wanna download something to slow it down..

Also , was there any news released about when lollipop will launch on the n5?

I use the hangouts app. I think the advantage is seemless switching between hangouts (IM) and SMS messaging. Also, hangouts has recently added the ability to make data calls.

As for apps, it's hard to say. There are several root only apps I'd suggest, but as for non root apps I'll try to pick 5:
Inbox
Pushbullet
Google Opinion Rewards
Xplore file manager
Unified remote

Everyone has different needs though, so some of those apps might not mean anything to you.

Android L for nexus 5 has supposedly started rolling out today. So it should make it to all of them soon enough!

Use Textra here and have on the past few phones, love the look and versatility, I'm not a hangouts man

I side loaded the stock messenger app that is going to come with android lollipop.

Works really well. I prefer it to hangouts for sms use, and any other third party app.

Give it a try now Download: Leaked Android 5.0 Lollipop apps or wait until lollipop is released.

The method for which one puts on a screen protector can make all the difference in the world. I've had protectors on all my phones (5 now) and only one had a bubble.
I'm very careful with my phones, but, except for the Nexus 5 that I'm using now, I've seen scratches in the screen protectors. Not saying it would have scratched the glass, but it might of.

I take your point about bubbles. When I bought my screen protector pack it came with, I think, three or four protectors. The first couple had the inevitable bubbles, no matter how careful I was, but the third was almost perfect - there is a very tiny speck of dust towards the edge - and, I thought, as good as I was likely to get. It's still there nearly a year later.

OK. A few more questions. Checking through the phone settings and current running processes within the apps menu I see the phone currently running with 1.1 GB of ram out of a possible 2. That seems like a lot to me, but maybe its not? The only app I have constantly running is AccuWeather with the little icon on top in the task bar, light flow and play music . And am looking for a good battery widget.

Any suggestions on weather apps or battery widgets that don't use a lot if memory and run good?

Also in the apps menu is there anything I could turn off?

I'm quite fond of 1Weather. It's a nice and lightweight app.

Mine is running with about 1.2 gigs of ram freed up, so you're probably in the average.
