Root CyanogenMod 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) on post e911 magic

Ok guys here is what I did to get Cyanogen 5.0.7 on my Magic+ (Yes this had the e911 perfect spl) This entire procedure was performed without a SIM card in the phone. So far I'm the only one that I know that's done this and I had a few tense moments trying to get something to work where I thought I bricked the phone. Keep the most recent Rogers RUU (e911) around as it saved my ass a couple of times.

** This will put you on the old Rogers Radio so either fill out the waiver or be prepared to loose your data **

Great guide. I never did the 911 update, but the last part is exactly what I did to install it.

Ran neocore, got 22 fps. Gallery works (though it did glitch out on me once). Everything seems to work awesome! I installed this keyboard:

[MOD] HTC_IME (29th April) v25: Custom sounds and much more - xda-developers

as I liked the HTC one better. Speech to text is awesome! Very happy with this.

You never cease to amaze me, GBD! You are most definitely a credit to the Android community as a whole, and especially to the Rogers Android community! Very fast work, my friend!

*sigh* Looks like there's more rooting work for me in the coming nights! ;)

Thanks!! Kudos to the guys over at XDA though, if they hadn't done all the legwork I wouldn't have been able tofigure this out.

Being that the Magic's and the Dream's hardware are so similar, is there any chance that this would work on the Dream as well?

I know it's a long-shot, as I would expect word of that would be spreading just as quickly, but I'm hopeful! :)

I haven't seen any sort of RUU around the net for the dream but if there its one leaked I'm sure that we'll hear about it fairly quickly. Someone else will have to test that one out though as my Dream is already rooted.

Just a note to state the obvious the CM-5.0.7 is for old radio only. There are no ports for the new radio (6.35.xxx).

Unless you revert back to old radio with GBD guide don't bother trying. I tought the guide was only for rerooting and did not find any info on CM forum regarding the old/new radio info. I got frustrated with errors when trying to update to CM and had to nand restore my previous 2.1 rom for new radio.

You're right OLD RADIO only!! Cyanogen is not compatible with the new radio. If you flash the new radio before trying to install cyanogen, you will get an error when trying to flash cyanogen. Been there - done that :-(

Ok.. So I got 2.1 on my magic and its running great but when I try to do the Rogers Waiver, it says that my IMEI number is invalid.. can I call rogers and have them do it for me?

I'm having the same problem. I haven't put 2.1 on my phone yet, though. If we've already put the 911 update on, would we still loose data after rooting and upgrading our phones?

EDIT: Also, is it possible to revert back to the stock post-911 rogers software?

Do you have a Magic or Magic+, it's possible that the Magic+ is not on the Rogers scanning system or it's even possible that once the phone was detected as updated, it was removed from their scanning system. I'm not sure.

I wish... I ran a 911 updated Magic for a while but two days after rooting I was cut again. Going back to a matching radio version solved the problem but this not only prevents running even a slightly different version it prevents using a different phone (like an N1 or anything else?) unless it too matches the expected version. The waiver is useless to me for this reason. I propose we do another pestering thread like we did for the initial update to eliminate the whole scanning process. I'd consider the waiver if it was based on the account and not an IMEI. But the whole thing is just wrong.

I'm using a new radio 2.1 but would prefer to try the new cyan 5. Too much trouble because of this silly scanning system. It has to stop.

I've got the Magic+. I guess I'll give it a try later this afternoon. If I have to, I've got my Dream as backup if they do indeed cut off my data.

For anyone that wants to stick with the stock android keyboard, but wants the voice search button that the HTC_IME_mod had, try this:

[ROM] CyanogenMod-5 - Would you like a pony? (EXPERIMENTAL) [05/03 - v5.0.7-test2] - Page 100 - xda-developers

Works perfect for me. I found the HTC_IME_mod keyboard to be sluggish and wanted to go back to the stock keyboard (but didn't want to lose speech-to-text!).

Thanks for that link, I was contemplating loosing the HTC keyboard because of just this problem.

My only gripe with it is a problem with all 2.1 keyboards. The comma key is what is replaced for the mic key. :/ You can long press the period to get a comma, or hit ?123 to type a comma. If you disable voice, the comma key will return, but speech-to-voice will be completely disabled. What we need is a way to get the comma key back and leave speech on to use the swipe right gesture to activate.

Beats the keyboard on the Xperia X10. They had to fit in 2 arrow keys on the bottome row because of no trackball. Really sucks, wasn't long changing it to swype.

I need to find a version of swype that I can use on my Magic. Anybody know where I can get one.

I agree that most of the 2.1 keyboards take a lot of getting used to. I'm about to try a different rom before settling on a rom to use until after official roms come out that are easier to package. voice input is sweet but we still need a keyboard that doesn't cause convulsions and agony.
:)
(which reminds me that the stock rogers rom still hasn't had the french portrait/landscape bug fixed. pretty major bug in my opinion)

Looks like I bricked my phone.. I am unable to update the firmware to the rogers rom.. I start the RUU (RUU_Sapphire_Rogers_WWE_3.05.631.7_R_release_signed_NoDriver)
it starts to update the radio gets to 36% then the screen on the magic goes black and sits there and the updater errors out with "Unknown Error"
I'm going to try some things and Ill let you all know how it turns out
