It's not in there. That's how you do it on the G1, but I do not see an "Android Keyboard" section under Locale & Text. I only see "Select Locale, Touch Input," and "Tutorial." None of which have the option to turn auto-capitalization off.

well if you open your touch screen keyboard you'll see something that looks like a gear, click that and it will bring you to the settings page and you should be able to disable it from there....

I just randomly tried the first app I saw (ChompSMS) and it was autocapitalizing. None of my other apps do. Are you using ChompSMS? Maybe it's doing it.

Do you mean auto-caps for each new sentence or is it stuck on capitals?

If it's stuck do this. Hold the up arrow until you see a line appear under it - that makes it capitalize. Then single click the up arrow to turn it off. Viola!

If you mean the other then I have no idea (but why would you not want it use proper grammar and sentence structure automatically?).

Not sure what you're reading into my post, I was merely trying to help you out...so ease up on the attitude there rebel (If you were merely having fun at my expense then I apologize if I took your post negatively.)

And I like that it auto-capitalizes...which yes an opinion. Not trying to flame you or your post, but forums are supposed to be helpful, and that was my intent.

I am right there with ya brother. I HATE my phone doing anything for me. I don't want spelling correction as I do a lot technical work and don't feel like dealing with adding hundreds of words to a dictionary. I don't want auto-caps as some of the work I do is case sensitive.

It's not that he's too easily offended it's that what was said to him was insulting and ill-considered. For instance: I do a lot of technical work and use my phone to communicate with my colleagues and since the OS I work on is case sensitive anytime my damn phone auto-corrects me I have to work around it. It has NOTHING to do with proper sentence structure at all for me and the statement "Sorry you'll have to suffer through proper sentence structure, you have my condolences." is just plain asinine. Thanks for not realizing there's a world outside of your little box. Now please sod off or at least stop being condescending when you obviously don't know everything.

Well I see some people don't understand that text messages lack any kind of inflection or tone that you get from a face to face or phone conversation, thereby allowing room for mis-interpretations.

And seeing as I have already tried to clear up the misunderstanding and apologized for it but SDscorch responds by continuing to talk about me 3rd person rather than seeing my intent was not malicious, i'll just refrain from joining the conversations in his posts in the future.

And those that have other more technical uses for their Heroes and typing...more power to you. I'm your average Joe user like a lot of others on this forum so remember not all of us will get what you're saying or posting all the time and will lean toward the obvious. Over it and out!

just like many other people i absolutely HATE auto-capitalization and spellcheck!

i have literally spent my entire afternoon trying to figure out how to turn this feature off...

i would rather rather return my phone or throw it in the trash than use a phone that alters my text messages!

FIX:

i have a Samsung Intercept that kept auto-capitalizing the word 'i'

the only way i could figure out how to stop this was to unselect the following:

Settings -> Language & keyboard -> Android keyboard -> Quick fixes


unfortunately by disabling this option you also have to disable the 'Show suggestions' feature, which i happen to really enjoy. why on earth are these two features dependant on each other?

i wrestled with my android phone for 9 days... i tried as hard as i could to like it.

i tried to put up with the atrocious interface, lack of features, and poor quality.

then i picked up my parents' iPod touch and decided within a minute that i would get an iPhone...

i bought an iPhone last january and fell in love with it immediately. everything you want to do can be done quickly, easily, and intuitively. i loved it from day one and have never looked back.

android is a complete joke. the quality is pathetic.

the only reason i bought an android phone was because i used to think i hated apple. now that i've actually tried a couple of their products, i realize apple is amazing.

google doesn't care about quality in my opinion....

Whoa, Nelly. Google has nothing to do with the quality of the handsets that come out. Android is open source and manufacturers, like HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung, make the handsets and, therefore, determine the quality of them. Apple uses a completely vertical system that controls everything from the hardware to the software. That works for some people because they do not mind being confined to what Apple thinks they should have, but for others, it means less freedom. If you are happy with your Apple iPhone, then more power to you, but others like having more choices.

You had a bad experience with one handset, the Sprint Samsung Intercept, and it caused your whole perspective of Android to shift downwards. Frankly, with that handset, I can sort of understand because it really is not one of the best ones out there due to some issues. This is especially true with the issue where Samsung never coded an OpenGL driver so that the GPU could be taken advantage of. It is a shame that one handset caused that much of a a negative reaction towards Android from you, but I guess first impressions are everything.

i will admit that i have only personally owned one android device... but as a developer i have been equally disappointed by every android device i've held in my hand. this includes tablets and phones...

yes, you can talk about how great open source is... i love the power to change things. however, when you're talking about a phone you need to make sure things actually work first. what i like about my iPhone is i never feel the need to change it, because it just works well out of the box. i spent a week trying to learn how to use my android phone and still could barely send a text or dial a phone number.

i am a huge believer or open source and have been a linux user for well over a decade. that doesn't mean android is good. i would argue that android would be a lot better if google maintained a little more control over it.... it seems to me they're too busy whipping out partially functional proof of concepts to care about maintaining quality.

I am also a software developer and I have several Android devices, including smartphones and tablets, and I have never been disappointed with any of them. If there was something that I wanted to change, I did. I am not one who likes to leave well enough alone. I have always been one who likes to tinker with things and Android provides that outlet perfectly for me. Frankly, I am a lover of technology and the software that goes along with it, no matter the source. I have an appreciation for Android, iOS, webOS, and Windows Phone as mobile operating systems.

Now, let us try to return this thread back to its original subject matter before it is derailed even further. This type of discussion should probably be reserved for a different part of the forum or perhaps a different forum all together. Enjoy your Apple iPhone. Perhaps one day you will give Android another try and like what it has to offer.

as usual i'm more or less sorry to have ranted... though i stand by my love of the iPhone.

the best thing for everyone will be healthy competition between google and apple for years to come.

it would be nice if somebody could answer the OP, though...
